Barking Mad To Run

    INTRO

I am Scott aka Scottydog aka Scotty Dogg, runner since 1983, cancer survivor – caught very early, so I actually had a fairly easy time of it - , retired Air Force, employee of University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), friend of dogs, fun-runner, and all-around punster and goofball.  In 2003 I had spinal arthritis flare up and ever since then I’ve done the run/walk method since it hurts my back too much now to run continuously with no walk breaks.  I’m on what I call my “2F Plan” which stands for Fun and Finish.  My only goals for a race these days are finish everything I start, have fun along the way, and finish standing up with no ambulance waiting for me.  At events that I now do for fun I carry my camera, chase “Great Legs” to help motivate my slow old man self to keep moving forward, and take pictures before, during, and after the race. Sometimes I even get a nice post-race sweaty hug from one of the Great Legs ladies.   I then do a pictorial race report of my events.  I also carry dog biscuits with me to treat any dogs I may meet at a run – unless it’s a mean dog; then the biscuit goes in one direction and I go in another.  Hence my nickname “Scottydog.”

And a big thanks to runningahead.com for allowing me a “home” for my many many MANY race reports and photos.  Great site, free training log; calendars; running routes; maps; conversation forums for runners; and much more

Here is yet another of my photo reports.  Full report below.

A couple of the photos came out a bit blurry, sorry about that, I am definitely no professional photographer, lol, but at least the photos are free.

    BEFORE MY START

My 11th race of 2017 was the 8th annual Street2Feet 5K.  Love this event and have done every one of them since it first started. Street2Feet is a 5K training program for individuals experiencing homelessness in San Antonio. [www.street2feet.org] Event location was in downtown San Antonio, starting and finishing near 4th Street Presbyterian Church.  This is a very popular annual event that not only has the race, but also lots of vendors, food, free coffee, and so forth.  I don’t know if this event sold out our not but, as usual for this one, it was quite crowded.   I arrived about an hour before the 8 a.m. start and wandering around getting some photos.

    I have arrived....

    ON THE COURSE

Course started near the church, made a right turn and we did a little out-and-back on one street, then a right turn and we headed into the “heart’ of downtown San Antonio, going past the main library, onto Houston Street, one of the “main drags” of San Antonio, then a little ‘out-and-back’ on Alamo Street, going past The Alamo as we headed to the finish, back near the church.  This course was different from the usual one used in past years, due to some construction on one of the streets of the usual route. I actually liked this course better than the old route – and from talking to people post-race, most of the folks I chatted with liked this one better too, so I hope the Street2Feet folks keep this course for the future.

    EPILOGUE

Really nicely organized event for a good cause.  This popular 5K keeps growing every year.  Will continue to do this one every year for as long as I can.  Really nice quality tech tee race shirt, lots of post-race goodies, mucho ‘freebie’ stuff being handed out by various vendors. Just a really very pleasurable race experience with lots of great people onsite.

MUCHO THANKS to everyone who made this event happen for us, law enforcement, Street2Feet folks, all the many many sponsors, the Presbyterian church for its hospitality, and big thanks to the staff of the Marriott hotels near 4th street for allowing we participants use of their lobby restrooms when the race porta-potties did not arrive for some reason - all the many people who made this one happen for all we participants.

Hope you enjoyed the report and photos!

I remember a nice hotel opening their bathrooms up for a 5k one morning.  Bathroom stuff is important before a race.
