Spontaneous Marathon Weekend Penguins! (Read 37 times)

Penguin Power!

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

    Upcoming Races: Run as One 4M (4/24) * Japan Run 4M (5/8) * Brooklyn Half (5/21)

    Penguin Power!

Happy Saturday morning all ;-)  Eating breakfast and drinking my coffee.  I'll leave for the race in about an hour, I have to walk the dog and do battle with getting sleepy DH out the door.  He's going for sub 2-hours.  I'm hoping to PR (better than 2:18:58) but in an ideal world I'll go sub 2:10.  I'm not sure I have that in me given the weather forecast for today, but I'm optimistic to hit somewhere close to 2:15.

Zel - I named this thread after you because I think it is some incredibly awesome that you are trained to the point that you can say "sure I'll do a marathon in a few days" :-)

Also, of course, good luck tomorrow Lauren.  I know that you're absolutely going to crush your first half tomorrow!

Thanks sapf Smile Good luck today!

3 mile shakeout with 3 strides done! In new shoes (Wave Riders) because I like to live dangerously. On the agenda for the rest of the day: hydrate, pack my race and overnight bags, take kid to soccer, get my first haircut in... 18 months Surprised I wonder if I'll be faster tomorrow if I'm missing about a pound of hair?

        Return To Racing

          Good morning, Pens.

Good luck with the PR sapf.  Hope the weather cooperates.  You run at our pace, so maybe we will see you at a NYC HM someday.

I see your tracking is working, Kristin.  Go Kristin !!!  Looks you are also our pace.

Our weather is improving, so it looks like we are good to go.  Better get registered and pick up our packets.

          Brilliant

            Good morning Penguins!

            So much racing this weekend!

Jill, good luck.  I know you are going to PR!  Fingers crossed that you will run one of your more optimistic goal times!

Lauren, you're living on the edge. Smile  You're not going to wear the new shoes tomorrow, are you?

Jerry, I'm glad you get to run your race after all!

10-11 miles for me this morning.  I have to finish my coffee before I can decide.

Hey guys.  My GU arrived, planning a shakeout run later.  Maybe the same as Laurens. Smile

Gear check- I am going to wear my newest pair of my favorite shoes, the Saucony Breakthrus.  But that pair is bright pink.  I was going to wear my race shirt from this race last year (I ran the 10K), but that's red.  With my skirt and calf sleeves, that puts me all red and black, except with pink shoes and a white visor.  All totally functional, but   I do have a very lightweight old navy shirt that's white.  I don't wear it too often, because it's sort of see through, but it might be perfect for the heat actually.  It would go better with the visor and shoes.  Thoughts?

Also, since I did hear back from the RD that they will have 9 aid stations (they say that's approx. every two miles ), DH is going to drop me off, then head up to Portland to get some Blue Star donuts for the finish line.  I had one after I finished Portland, and it was awesome.  It took me like an hour to eat because I wasn't feeling well and had to take little nibbles, but it was still great.  He will meet me for the first time at the turnaround if all goes well, or somewhere beyond that if not.

Good luck, sapf!  Thanks for the shout out! Smile  We have somebody in our running club who is a super casual marathon runner (and trainer).  But she's run a ton of them and always has a good time.  I want to be more like her.

Good luck Jerry, Lauren, and probably Scotty!  Did I miss a kitty update yesterday?

                        PAD- Enjoy the Preakness!

                        on my way to badass

                          Good weekend Penguins!

Lauren- you are going to crush it tomorrow!

Good luck to all the racers this weekend!

Still waiting for the perfect race picture. 5K PR-33:52 , 10K PR 1:11:16, First HM 2:42:28

Z - I'm glad the course has water, despite the small numbers.  Is it combined with another race?  I'm with you at having a hard time eating after a race or hard run.  I think I managed to choke down a banana, but that was it after my marathon.  A muffin came about an hour later, and it was hard to eat.

sapf - I hope your race went well and you got a PR.

PAD - are you in Baltimore for the Preakness?

Lauren - don't they say that every pound takes off 10 seconds per mile?  Hope the shakeout went well.

D - have a good run with DH.  I hope you find a nice shady place to run.

Jerry - I'm glad you get to race this weekend after all.  Good luck.

Brilliant - I hope your long run goes well.

AFM:  it's heating up again this weekend (mid-80's).  I've got a short 3 mile run and a MLR (6-9) on the post-marathon schedule.  Not sure which I'll do today.  It probably depends on how well I adapt to the heat and how the legs are feeling.  I really wish I were racing sometime soon.  Good luck to all the racers this weekend.

                            Zelanie

Ginny- You will be back out there soon!  Do you have any backpacking planned for this summer?  This race is part of a bigger iris festival with a carnival and all kinds of stuff.  Today there's a 3K and a 5K.  Tomorrow is a 10K, HM, and full.  They are all on the same out and back course with different turnarounds.  But the marathon starts an hour earlier.  So I just might see the last few HM walkers.  Maybe.  I'm guessing the stations will be more frequent when I'm on the part of the courses with the other races.  The middle 13.1 might be kinda quiet.

                              Jill.

Bad day.  Bad race. DH DNFed - in er now. Haven't seen him yet. Apparently medics had to do CPR and he has some sort of head injury. He's in cat scan now Sad
