Yak Trax ? (Read 375 times)

Eeeekkkk -  you are running it this Spring?!?!  Yes, you need to get better.  I'm so excited for you.  I know how much you love that race from your posts on RW where you mention it.  Yay!!!  I look forward to cheering you on as you train!

It's April 28th, so fortunately I have time.  It's not a course you can go out and run a good time on anyway (the race says add 20 minutes to your finish time, which I think is a little much, but it gives you an idea...), so my thought/plan always was I was just running it for the joy of running the course.  If my training isn't ideal, so be it.  As long as I can finish it comfortably and safely, I plan to run.  But right now I haven't been running at all.  So eeeeekkkkk is right!

You're training for a spring marathon too, correct? I couldn't recall which one you chose.  It's definitely tough to train for a spring marathon in the midwest.  We need a winter like last winter, not 2010-2011.  Because of my work schedule, I usually do my long runs on Fridays ... That winter, EVERY Friday we got a snowstorm.  haha.  I started apologizing to people for it.  I am hoping we get an easy winter like last.  Smile

No, I wouldn't use microspikes on hard ice, although I haven't actually tried - points aren't sharp enough and probably rotate. ..

The opportunity presented itself so I ventured cautiously onto some extensive frozen overflow. The points slightly scratched the surface - not enough for any traction. About what I was expecting. Actually, I don't think my studs would've helped much on that either. I went and found some packed snow to run on.

I think your mentality going into Big Sur - "running it for the joy of running the course" - is awesome.  That's what it is all about, anyway, right?!?!   That's something I have to remind myself of sometimes, too. I think I tend to lose that perspective once I start training. I hope you get healthy enough to start running again soon, because I know how much you must miss going out every day. I mean, you just had a year long streak - to me that is just mind blowing!   Your running - how much and how frequently - puts you in that category that all the n00bs like me look up to and admire and also illustrates just how much you love doing what you do.

I am going to run Carmel in IN on 4/20 and I am also signed up for Green Bay, on 5/19. I might not run Green Bay, but I wanted it as a back up in case I have a rough go at it in Carmel.

Ummm, you are so right about training in the snow.  We've gotten hit 2 days this week.  One day, I came home in tears (it HAD been a long day, that's my excuse...:grinSmile and yesterday I went out in a storm and it went better until mile 6, when I just started hating life.  I need to learn how to deal with the snow or I won't be in any shape to run a race in Spring!

I, along with everyone else here - I'm certain of it - are rooting for you to come out with a clean bill of health soon, so you can get back to your "normal" and that includes being able to run.  Thinking of you, Jenny...

I have decided that when the weather sucks, to switch the screens on my Garmin to just show my HR(because I find it interesting how our "effort" is shown in the raw)and timer and distance. Paces really shouldn't be paramount when potential injury is on the line. And I take the run for what it is, scenic but cold, a tuff mudder(snow & ice version), a shower without soap & in clothing, or a test in how aerodynamic I can make myself in a wind tunnel. Each run in difficult conditions makes you mentally tough instead of the usual runs where you mindlessly make your body tough. I see it as a good thing.

But then I have been told I am hopelessly optimistic as a person.

Eh, it is what it is. Stay safe& warm runners!

I was JUST talking to someone about this yesterday and saying how I think I need to ditch the Garmin on the MLRs/EZ runs in the worst of conditions.  I don't use a HR monitor, but less of an emphasis on pace might make the runs a bit easier.

                Thanks, NBT.  Smile

Heidi - I think it is very challenging to train for a spring marathon in the midwest.  But it is doable.  I think more than anything it becomes demoralizing to have to face the cold, snow, and dark day after day.  I try to do easy runs outside at least as much as possible.  If I need to go inside to do my long run or another important run, so be it.  It can be a nice change to get to run inside in shorts, if nothing else!

                Go figure

Jenny...I just wanted to add that I'm so glad to see you back posting here and apparently feeling much better.  It's hard to know from postings on here how people are doing, but I had read somewhere that you had a bit of a rough go.  Anyways, hopefully the worst is behind you and you will be able to get back to it in good time.

RMT3B and Baby Toes...I totally agree about the snow miles and taking them based on effort.  I don't run with a HR monitor either, but that would be a really good snow tool.  To me, snow runs are kinda like trail runs, in that they are beneficial because they activate different muscle groups, irrespective of the pace.
