I could be wrong but I think this thread is about something.  I just can't figure out what.

i should have quoted the original post.

My first reaction is just say, eh, you were pretty over weight and probably didn't workout as much as you wanted to believe. Don't get me wrong, it's great that running has helped you turn things around and that the diabetes isn't active. I think it may just be hard to take advice from a guy that touched a cigarette, although I guess in regards to that we come from generations where smoking was viewed very differently.

You're right, when i was growing up, and especially since i grew up in a blue collar neighborhood in the 1960's and 1970's, smoking was pervasive. We knew the dangers, but almost everyone smoked, and i picked up the habit in high school, where probably 80% of the kids smoked.

I don't agree with the idea though of not taking advice from someone because they at one time did something bad for their health. I think you should learn from other people's experiences, even and maybe especially people who are not perfect.

As far as working out or not, I can tell you that most probably when i was your age i worked out as much as you do now. In a different way (i trained in martial arts for 1-2 hours every night) but i did work out a lot and was focused on it.

          You may be right

This thread just got more interesting and I saw the original post. You shouldn't have erased it.

I'll admit to not giving enough respect to people that lift weights and do other similar kinds of activities. I just don't have a frame of reference for it as it's not something I enjoy, or a look that I want to have. No question, you are stronger than me. I still would always want to weigh a good 30lbs less than that, even though you are a version of fit, just because it's my own personal aesthetic preference.

As for not taking advice, you're right that a bad choice shouldn't preclude me from learning someone's experiences (or even multiple bad choices for that matter). I was just saying that it's hard to say what is blanket bad eating versus an occassional indulgence, especially when one requires a boatload of calories just to maintain weight.

i totally agree with you on that. The only thing i'd say is that your calories shouldn't be from just anything. Like when i think of some one like michael phelps i think that because of his dietary habits now that later in life he's going to be a little messed up. Or maybe seriously messed up. Did you ever see what he eats every day?

Edit: you know i don't look like that anymore, i'm 30 lbs lighter.

But then I was there for the start of hers, this is missing vital info.....as in first post. It's such a cheesy thing to do is to start a thread and then change the first post because you don't like what people are saying to you.

                    Subway?

I don't eat badly, but I know I could make improvements. I'll eat a bowl of rice with veggies and potatoes for one meal, and then for another I'll have a sandwich using a frozen chicken patty. On some nights, that's just one meal! It's hard when you know your eating habits are clean enough to get by to be motivated to do better. I guess that's kinda your point though.

I hear ya Nam. 3 years ago my blood test indicated I was well on my way. Already on BP and cholesterol meds I was given the choice to step up the dosages and I was approaching pre-diabetic  glucose levels....OR....Change my lifestyle. 3 months later I dropped ~45lbs and had a spot on perfect blood test.

In other words...I dodged a bullet. To this day I am phobic about what I eat. I love to cook which is fortunate. That way I KNOWwhat is in the food I'm eating. My mother is an amputee, losing her eyesight, has lost all sensation in her extremities, and cannot stabilize her glucose even with insulin. I love her, but every time I see her she knows me exactly why I need to remain diligent in my diet and exercise regimen.
