Finally going to do it (Read 191 times)

So after Monday's madness and experiencing the terror first-hand I have gotten something good out of it. I am going to start training for my first ever full in June. I'm not looking to race it, just finish. I have a decent base with years of experience as a runner and I can't say how excited and ready I am to embark on this challenge. Its about getting to the start and finish for me without injury. Speed is an old friend of mine. My goals went from cracking 24 minutes in a 5k to prepping for a marathon. Hope to see others do something for themselves and/or others too after living through something like that.

    Running is my mental-Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Hartford ING marathon. I was originally going to do the HM. If something comes up in training, I believe that I can step down to the HM, but I'm trying to think positive.

I was watching the inervated course video. How did you like this course and was it fairly flat?

I don't think we're the insurance capital anymore.  They all left town.

edit: well I stand corrected!  Apparently they've held on to enough of them

                  Uffda

Good for you! I hope the training goes well!

I'm in a similar boat. My wife has asked me twice if I'm going to do a Fall marathon. I'm thinking after my last HM on 6/22 that I should take a couple of weeks off and then start FM training using a Pfitz plan. I was reading Jim2's stuff the other day and he said he'd do 10k training in the spring, take a couple of weeks off and then start FM training for a Fall marathon. I think that's what I'll do. Smile

I was watching the inervated course video. How did you like this course and was it fairly flat?

It's a fairly flat course.  My Garmin calculated about 500 feet of uphill.  I get about that when I run 8 miles outside my front door.  The biggest "hills" are the highway overpasses when you run out of and then back into the city.  One of those is nicely placed at mile 25.  LOL  Other than that, there are no real "uphills"...just a few inclines that really shouldn't even slow you down.  By comparison, the only other marathon course I've run, Providence, was much more difficult.

It goes without saying that Hartford won't be the circus atmosphere that Boston is.  Still, for a mid-size marathon, it's very well run and there are plenty of spectators.  Running through the riverwalk area is a blast.  I am seriously bummed that I won't be able to run the full this year.

Edit:  Here is my Strava data from last year.  It should show the elevation profile, though I can't see it because this browser is old.

Hilary, I am so happy to hear this!!

I stated this in other posts about Boston...................

Seeing my hubby run Boston in 2010 is THE REASON I ran my first marathon in Oct 2010 at age 48, after

10 years of running and 16 half marathons. I had been at dozens of marathons as a participant in the 1/2

or other distances and/or watching my hubby run a full.

But until I experienced as a spectator the special atmosphere and energy that surrounds the Boston Marathon

I had never had a desire to run a full. That day changed everything for me and even as I stood at the start line, then

the finish line watching the elites start and finish and watching thousands of ordinary every day people run with

such joy and be treated with such respect by the people of Boston I knew that I wanted to experience that myself.

Not Boston as  that will likely never happen for me, but to run my own race with pride and joy.

Two days shy of 6 months later I crossed the finish of what I thought would be my one and only full.  It had 45

full marathoners and was mostly rural with few spectators and I ran most of it alone and loved every minute of

it. To me it wasn't about the spectators or the finish time it was about making a decision and keeping a promise

                          to myself.

On Mothers Day I will be running my 6th full.

I can 100% understand how what you experienced on that day would give you the desire to run a full. You will

have a special feeling in your heart when you cross that finish line that I really cannot fully explain but you will

                          know it when it happens.

I'm a little sad that I won't get to meet you as we were going to run the ING this fall but then had the opportunity

to run a full in Ireland for hubby 50th b'day. We do however plan on running ING in 2014. I bet you will be there

                          doing another full.

                          You will be awesome.Smile

Thanks guys so much. I am doing a very basic beginners 2 plan from Hal Higdon. Its really the only one I can fit into my busy life with grad school, work, and life. It will be a death march at the end, but I don't even care if I have to walk some. My pride on time is not what its about this time around. Its about finishing a marathon. After that, I can go back to my love of racing the 5K distance.

Just being here is all the support I need. Believing in me, I guess? I need to believe in myself and its something I've struggled with for years. This will be such a test of my spirit and strength. I've never felt so ready.
