I think he has a reasonable hypothesis. And his analysis might be fine. I just wonder if it matters. How much time did those Kenyans at Boston spend in video analysis of their technique? Do triathletes who affect a less vertical style improve their performance?
Not a bad idea to suggest that you adjust your racing technique to a more efficient technique for longer slower races, but does it matter?
Years ago I was watching a marathon on TV and there was this guy analyzing everyone, pointing out who had an inefficient up-and-down stride and who had an efficient no-vertical-motion stride. He was saying that the up-and-down guys were going to wear out sooner. As I recall, in the end it had no correlation at all on the final results.
