do you get a Xmas bonus? (Read 444 times)

Little Blue

    I work for my self.

So does my DH.  I told him his bonus is that, since he worked so hard this year, we can afford for him to take two weeks off now.  So far, he's spent all of it with the flu. Dead

    Sloooow.

Other half got a ham. Considering his employer and the fact half his payroll cheques are rubber, that was a nice bonus lol.

I do not get a Christmas bonus.  Never have, never will.  Oh, and I haven't gotten a raise in 2 1/2 years, and it will probably be extended.  But I'm thankful to still have a job.

Like you, I also get gifts from clents and they are much appreciated. But I think that their secret goal is to fatten me up, as I seem to get only homemade cookes, sugar pies and Belgian chocolates. So sorry about your dog! Our cat had something similar and she almost died of starvation and dehydration. A two day stay at the vet and $600 later, and she was home again in much better condition. It's been 2 years now and she's our cute fat cat again. I would have borrowed the money if it hadn't been available at the time.

Same here. When the vet gave us a written estimate of options once he had examined her, one of them was of course an estimate to euthanize her. We took the middle option, intensive supportive care and lots of meds to help her pass it naturally after the meds had hopefully broken it up enough to be able to pass. We didn't have that money at the time but they worked with us to pay it over a two week time frame. Surgery was the top option, we would have had to take pretty extreme measures to afford it. But the way I see it, she is basically another kid. I would beg, borrow, and steal to help one of my other human kids. She is no different(and honestly, compared to the rest of us, incredibly cheap!)

I'm glad your cat is okay, lily!

We don't get a Xmas bonus, but a yearly bonus yes, usually after the books have been closed, normally we'll get it 2nd week of March for the previous year. Funny thing though, because of upcoming "cliff" it was decided they'd give us our bonuses this year and chance all the extra taxes, it was a nice Xmas present.

I work part time for a salesman. One year he gave me a gift card to the movie theater. It was okay, we really don't do movies. The next year it was to Lowes, that is somewhere I do like to shop. Last year was Lowes and a case of unique beers. But after he found out my husband drank many of them, this year... Gift card to my LRS. He said my reaction to that card wasthe best he had seen all season.

Ive got to give him credit for really knowing what I like.

I am self employed. I have a home daycare. While nobody ever "tips" me the holiday bonus tip that ettiquite experts say you should do at the holidays, they do usually give me gift cards to eateries or sporting goods places. $25 x 3 sets of parents is very generous. I certainly don't expect it but it sure is nice to get! And I take several days off this time of year(24-26 & 31-1), so a bonus I see it is that I name my own vacation  days right now.

My hubs got a $350 holiday bonus($500 before taxes). That went to pay for our dog's vet bill. She nearly died from an intestinal blockage after Thanksgiving. That was a nice unexpected $900 vet bill we couldn't afford. But we couldn't not try to save her, she's family.

Huh, I guess we did too much when we used a home daycare. we used to give her a week's pay for a Christmas gift. Cookies would've been much cheaper.

Just to comment on the gift cards, my employer grosses up the taxes so employees don't get hit.  It's kind of crappy to give a $100 gift card only to have the employee get hit with $35 in taxes.  Granted it's the law, but still.  The extra taxes the employer pays via gross up is worth the positive employee relations.

Isn't the employee half of the FICA and the federal and state withholding still reported as income in addition to the $100.00 on the gift card?

It's actually quite normal for those with a bonus as part of their salary package to receive it in March. These bonuses are typically based income and other targets. Usually the bonuses are paid out after the year end audit and if you leave the company prior to that you lose it a u less a departure settlement has been negotiated or is part of your contract if you have one.

I got 2 weeks pay and was happy. I should be getting a mgmt bonus next yr. those ate usually a % of income and paid in March.

Anything received from the employer is income so yes, it is income, even if they were gift cards.

I work for the government so we have not received a raise in 4 years, least of all any bonus.  So, no.

I have never seen anybody giving the bonus post end of the year, but the employer is not obligated to give you any bonus and they can give it to you at any time of year.

I have three part time jobs. My 2.5 days a week IT job sent me a $100 holiday check, the chiropractor I work for one day a week gave me a $50 bill, and I didn't get anything from the city-run fitness center I work at a couple days a week. I didn't expect to get anything at all from any of them, so I was quite happy with the haul.

I don't get anything from my employer, but as an assistant in a kindergarten classroom I get plenty of gifts. Sometimes it's cash, which is always awesome. Most often it's boxes of chocolates and coffee mugs and a bunch of $25 gift cards to Target or Old Navy or Starbucks. This year I got $70 worth of gift cards for coffee shops. Now THAT is a lotta coffee!

DH works at a hotel and this year he got a $300 check from the hotel owners, as well as a $150 gift from one of the hotel's biggest client. Last year the hotel owners gave him half that amount. I'm interested to see what it will be next year!

That's normal.  But that's not a Christmas bonus; that's a performance bonus or a bonus related to productivity.  aponi was asking about a Christmas bonus, which is why I made that comment.

No...if anything, my unused sick days being paid out right before Christmas makes for a nice extra check, though.

Exactly. And I would bet that a bonus paid at year end(someone said February) or March isn't really a Christmas bonus.
