2012 Year in Review (Read 543 times)

Since the year is winding down, I thought it would be cool for all of us to share how this year went. What races you ran, goals you achieved, mileage, whatever you want to share, put it here Smile

    @runjerseygirl

I just started running in July, so I'd say my biggest achievement is how far I've come.  I'm thrilled with my progress, and can't wait to see what 2013 will bring.

Aside from running, I'm thrilled with all the new friends I've made here.  I've become close with a lot of people in the last few months, some more recently than others, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. <3

      Do you even run?

I had two main goals for 2012 - 2:15 half marathon and 1,000 miles. I ran a 2:13 HM in April, and as of right this minute I'm sitting at 965 miles for the year.

I also PR'd in the 5k and 10k, so that's cool. The 5k PR was by 2 minutes (27:49 in October, from a 29:53 in December last year).

I also ran the Runner's World Hat Trick (3 races in 2 days) and didn't kill myself. Very glad I did it but I doubt I'll do it again. Smile

2012 has been my worse year of running.  My asthma diagnosis was made in the second half of 2011 and during 2011 it didn't go that bad.  Then I started allergy shots in January and that coupled with the asthma made my asthma go ballistic.  I had two separate severe asthma episodes that cut my running a lot and my times during the first half of the year went South with times as slow as 2mm slower than before.  My breathing went from 88% breathing capacity to 49%.  My goal for the 2012 in 2012 was cut by 200 miles and even then I was unable to meet that requirement due to the two severe asthma episodes and the recovery that entailed.

Then I started training for the Berlin Marathon and between my doctor and my coach, they got my asthma back on track.  My most recent breathing test came back at 92%, still an 8% loss of breathing as compared to normal people but I'll take it.  I got PRs in the 5K, 5 miles, and the marathon.  In fact, this year, I got PRs in every distance I attempted one but the 10K where I got 2 asthma attacks during the race.  My plan to end 2012 with my paces to be same as pre-asthma levels has been met (in fact, I am now faster).  I've also won three AG awards this year.

Now off to 2013 with my goal to run the miles I planned on running in 2012 plus a second star on the Marathon Maniacs and other PRs to come.  The first half of this year sucked; the second one went really well.  I hope it continues that way.

I had a great year, which was my second year of running.  Really, it could not have gone much better:

            • More than doubled my 2011 mileage and will close out the year around 2300 miles
            • Ran my second and third marathons, PR'ing in both and knocking 31 minutes off my marathon time in one year
            • Ran four half marathons and PR'd twice
            • Raced a duathlon relay with DW and we rocked it
            • Raced a half ironman relay on a hot day and had my most satisfying race yet, despite it being my slowest HM
            • Finished first in my AG for the first time (a 5K)
            • It took all year, but I finally set a new PR in the 5K
            • Other than a two week stretch with an angry ITB, I stayed healthy

            I also biked 1500 miles.

Looking ahead to 2013, this year is going to be tough to beat.  I accomplished a lot.  I am already setting myself up for a good 2013 though.

I've gone from being a 270lb couch potato who couldn't run a mile, to a 183lb runner who logs 50+ mile weeks and is picking up some decent speed.  I couldn't be happier, especially considering I only started running in April.  It's been a fantastic year, and I expect next year to be even better!

My overall health and fitness is definitely my greatest accomplishment, but I'm also very proud of my AG win and PR at my last 5k.  Hoping to place again and go sub-20 on New Years Eve.

My 2012 was a mostly frustrating running experience for the first 3/4 of the year.

I trained hard for a HM, and it was randomly 85 degrees on race day, in mid March in Minnesota, so I couldn't put it to good use.  I then kept training hard for a 10k 6 weeks later, and it was stupidly crowded, poured rain, and I slipped and fell on my face, so that time was disappointing as well (though, amusingly a PR since my PR was so soft).  I trained all summer doing 5k specific speedwork, ran a 5k in October, and ran just about the same time as I had run the last time I ran a 5k, about a year and a half before.

So, on October 20th, I was feeling pretty miserable about my running.

Then 7 days later, I went out and ran a big, confidence boosting HM, where I PRed by 3.5 minutes and nearly broke the 1:50 barrier without trying, which I thought was not something that was within my grasp yet.

That HM, coupled with some really strong marathon training for the last two months, has made me feel really positive about my running again.

Overall I will have a new mileage PR for the year (should be 1605 if I run what I have planned, but even now at 1533 it's already a PR).  New mileage PR for a month (will hit 218 by the end of December, thanks to December having lots of Sunday LRs in it).  And last week I had to push off a LR by one day, so I accidentally ended up with a 7 day total of 72 miles, which is a PR by 20 miles (and my legs didn't even fall off!!).  Even if I count that extra LR with the previous week as it was originally scheduled, the other 54 miles I did were a weekly PR by two miles.

                My wildly inconsistent PRs:

                5k: 24:36 (10/20/12)

                10k: 52:01 (4/28/12)

                HM: 1:50:09 (10/27/12)

                Marathon: 4:19:11 (10/2/2011)

                Petco Run/Walk/Wag 5k

+1 what DR said... 2012 hasn't been my best year for sure. Started with overactive bladder medication rocking my socks and bladder issues causing a disastrous 3M Half marathon (3:15), which helped me spiral into depression and triggering full blown PTSD. I almost stopped running and was really struggling until I started going to the Veterans Center and getting PTSD treatment. I realized I needed a project to manage so made running the Decker Half Marathon on 12/9 the project, registered for it, signed up a coach for training and got to run with a group for a change. Now that the race is past - which was not fun either - warm, humid day, with late killer hills, one abt 6% or more over .5-.75 mi! I had a change in meds two weeks before the race, then Urologist added an antibiotic  4 days before - which all helped make me succumb to the heat. So am building a long run plan in RA and trying to stick to it. Not really enjoying running alone again or un coached, but there's nothing going on. Did register for the 3M Half on 1/13/13 and hope/should do better than last year now that I have my head out of my butt (well, mostly!)

                  Ya'll keep on keeping on!

The year started with turning 50 after Christmas, then the Bermuda Challenge Marathon in January and then

major surgery in Feb 6th. No running for 6 weeks.

Total fears of having my worst running year since I started half marathons in 2003. In fact I had no real expectations

of running more than a half marathon in 2012 after my surgery.   My highest milegae  week  of running was a week

during fall marathon training @ 42 miles.

Turned out with many AG placings, 6 or 7 as I recall, and two 3rd Place OverallWomen Duathalon wins. Got my

first ever "Adult" big girl trophy!LOL

3rd Place Overall Female - Sprint Duathlon    I"m pretty proud of that little plastic tacky trophy!LOL

It was a Breast Cancer Fundraiser hence the "all pink" outfit. However since pink/black are my favorite colors I

would have been dressed like that regardless.Roll eyes

The Provincial Overall Title for womens 50-59 Sprint Duathlon for a 2nd year in  a row.

Hubby and I were for the 3rd year in a row the only married couple in our province to achieve the

"Run for The Cycle" status of running a 5k, 8k, 10k, 1/2 and full Marathon of a race sanctioned by

                    our road racing organization.

After not having a sub 2 half marathon since 2010 I was giving up hope after running two 2:01 halfs in 2012 I

finally got sub 2 again in October. I think I was more happy about that than my marathons.

Three destinations races - Bermuda Marathon, Portland Maine Marathon and Ottawa 1/2

                    15 races in total

                    1 mile

                    5k

                    2 @ 10k

                    1 @ 8K

                    1 @ 11 mile

                    4 @ Half Marathons

                    2 @ Full Marathons

                    3 Duathlons

                    New PR's set in 2012

                    5k PR @ 25:29

                    10 PR @ 54:16

                    1/2 Marathon PR @ 1:57:44

                    Full Marathon PR @ 4:20:02

                    Sprint Duathlon@ 1:26:57

The 5k, Half and Full Marathon PR's were run within a 4 week time period.

As I reflect on being 50 and my year of running, with only 5 more days to be a 50 yr old I have to say it turned

out pretty well and I have very reasonable chances of beating all those PR's as a 51 yr old. And if I don't,

well I don't really care that much, it's only running.

My biggest achievement is still being alive. I lost 3 people this year. I watched one die slowly- one quickly and the last found out about it while he was fighting for his life but thankfully wasnt there. At this point nothing else matters.

I placed in my A/G in a 5k as well, but I don't count that one, since I was only pacing SO. I don't remember if 1st or third...

Best of all, no injuries. And still sane of mind... I think? Big grin
