race obsessed

There is not a lot to report in a 1 mile race.  Its over so damned quick.

This is a yearly unadvertised 1 mile race.  Exactly to the foot 1 mile!  No bib, no race #, no shirt, no award.

Just an honest to goodness low cost, low key road race. Timed with an old time stop watch, called out at the finish and student/ volunteers keeping us in order and taking names.

I had talked my 8yo DD into racing a few days ago, and the morning started not so good.  After getting up and getting dressed I walk in to find her with tears in eyes in the middle of teeth brushing, "I don't want to race, I never wanted to race this race..."

I spoke to her several times before she pulled it together, and only because I told her I would meet her at the 1/2 mile and help her.

This all stems to confidence issues, worried about the competition, worried about pacing, worried about blowing up, worried about not running fast enough at the start.

All things we deal with, but to an 8yo (that is sensitive) very hard to deal with...

The race was a 3 part event:

    8:30 am   1st-3rd graders

    8:50 am   4th-6th graders

    9:00 am   Adults

We showed up early and I had us signed up.  Again no bibs...

DD and I went for a warm-up jog, just talking and relaxing her getting the legs moving and the lungs etc. In an effort to not pressure her and time wise we did 3/4 of the course. Back in plenty of time for her.  I left her with her mother while I went out for another warm-up.

I met several of my training team mates and several other fairly quick runners. Another and I took off for our warm-up and about half-way in I stayed at the half as the first 3 boys came in.  Followed about 50 meters back by my DD.

I started up pacing with her, and she sounded great! She looked good and relaxed, exactly what I wanted to see from her at this point.

A few reminders about breathing and relaxing and she picked her pace up. Slowing reeling in the 3 boys.

Of course as we hit the 3/4 mile mark and the boys were feet ahead they started surging and trying to keep ahead of the girl.

Last turn ~300 meters , I told her time to open up but not sprint!  and I let her go.  She took them out!

    1st overall!  new PR!

Officially they didnt know who she was and missed writing down her time - someone estimated (based on 2nd place) she was around a 7:07.   Video recording shows her crossing right after 6:58 was called!

So best case she just broke a 7in/mile ! and we are both good with that!  (old PR was 7:46)

*NOW*  on to the less interesting part of the RR

The adults started and one of my fast training partners (16yo) and I took out at roughly a 3:55, It felt good and smooth.  We worked together and kept each other going.  Nearest person was 20 sec back at the nearest,  we hit the 1/2 mile mark at 2:25.

He nudged me "time to go" and I pushed, I felt great at the half!

At the 3/4 The pain started in earnest and he pulled back even.  GRRR!

    Last turn 300 Meters!

He surged and I followed slowly losing ground:

    Finished him 1st (4:53) and me 2nd place (4:58)

    PR

    first sub 5 min!

I'm good with that all day!

    Edit:

BTW the DD was stoked!  Confidence Boost Galore! and glad she did it.

She ran a perfect race, so proud of her. (time/ win and PR a bonus - not part of the pride!)

Sounds like a real chip off the old block you got there.

Congrats to both of yous! I do not know if I ever felt great at any point during the mile, but then I do not run them enough to know how I should feel. As such mine usually suck. lol

NICE.  Wow, DD hammered her PR!  Is she glad she went ahead and raced?  Smile  Nice job to you too I guess.

At one point last season I had the mile, 5k and 10k lined up pretty damn close. After those distances though the falloff was exponential! lol

Nice job! Congrats to you and DD! I really want to try racing the mile sometime this year, have to figure out where/when it would make sense to do it.
