Really nice job Scott, well paced. You and I run about the same pace and I am always leary if I could hold 8:00 for 13.1 miles. For that reason I have not run a HM. Your RR gives me hope that it is possible. Could you have run the same time had you not been using pacers? In other words did they take the mental pressure off of you and allowed you to fight the fatigue with more vigor? Gratz on the PR, I say 3:45 for MCM is possible.

Thanks for your kinds words! As to your question, I had to give it some thought.
I've run a few races with pacers and a few on my own. When i ran a marathon in March I ran with a pacer. I had run a lot of training miles at marathon pace so when the pacer went out too fast I was confident enough to let him go. I knew what MP felt like, he was running too fast and didn't want to blow up. However I did end up falling back in with him later in the race and based my running speed off of him a lot in the later stages of the race when I was tired and couldn't trust myself to run by feel. I also wore a pace band and caught a mistake that he made at mile 20 that would have cost us to finish about 45 seconds late. Like Ronald Reagan once said, "trust but verify"!
When I ran this same HM last year I started with the 2:00 pacer but struck out on my own around mile 6 because I felt like I was able to run faster that day.
For this race, I was running at a pace that I'm not used to. I had not run very many training miles at half marathon pace so I was less confident in my judgement. Once I got a good feel for the pace (maybe by mile 5 or 6?) I probably could have run the rest of the race on my own, but maybe I would have fallen off pace without realizing it. I don't know.
Get out there and run one! What's the worst thing that could happen? So what if you blow up and have a bad day?

Holy moly! Congrats!!! Sounds like you had a great race! I totally forgot about the hot air balloon when I wrote my RR, which is silly, because I took THREE pictures of it with my phone before the start! LOL
