Barking Mad To Run

    INTRO

I am Scott aka Scottydog, runner since 1983, cancer survivor, retired Air Force, friend of dogs, fun-runner, and all-around goofball.  In 2003 I had spinal arthritis flare up and ever since then I’ve done the run/walk method since it hurts my back too much now to run continuously with no walk breaks.  I’m on what I call my “2F Plan” which stands for Fun and Finish.  At events that I now do for fun I carry my camera, chase “Great Legs” to help motivate my slow old man self to keep moving forward, and take pictures before, during, and after the race. Sometimes I even get a nice post-race sweaty hug from one of the Great Legs ladies.   I then do a pictorial race report of my events.  I also carry dog biscuits with me to treat any dogs I may meet at a run, hence my nickname “Scottydog.” Here is yet another of my Race Reports With Photos, and my thanks to all the people I interacted with for their graciousness and good humor in letting me take photos of them.

    SHORT VERSION REPORT

My 23rd race of 2013. LLS 5K (Lymphoma Lukemia Society) and 3rd race of my running week for this week:  did April Fool's 5K on April 1 and Brainpower 5K on April 6.  This one was held at McAllister Park, San Antonio, Sunday, April 7, 2013. Weather:  66 degrees at start time, 99% humidity, gaack!  About 60  - 70 participants.  A 5K at 8 a.m. followed by a 1-mile Doggie Dash at 9 a.m.  I finished the 5K with a time of 32:39 (11 seconds slower than my 5K on Saturday, April 6).  This was good enough for 3rd place in my age group.  Actually, I think there WERE only 3 in my age group, lol.

    LONG VERSION REPORT WITH PHOTOS

    Before the Start

Got to the start area with about 30 minutes to spare and did my usual thing: pre-start photos. The folks wearing the green LLS shirts have on the race shirts participants got in the goodie bags.

Me and a lovely lady and her cool dog, Chloe.  Now why is it I can remember the dog's name but not the lady's name?

    On The Course

Paved trails through part of the park, and then doing the last part of the course on a park road. Very flat course, except for one pretty small incline.  I think the winner did this course in 15-something. McAllister - the largest park in San Antonio - is a pretty park with lots of trees and also wildlife, especially deer.  If you are 'lucky" like me you might even get to see some deer closeup.  I've been running in this park for 19 years and have been knocked on my butt or 'brushed back" by them at least 20 times. I swear, they WAIT for me to show up - "Shh, shh! Here he comes!  Get ready..."   I must be their comic relief.

    race 015

I was pretty much on most of the course with these lovely ladies.  We'd play 'leapfrog' with them passing me as I took photos, and then me catching back up and getting ahead again.

Me and Bernadette with our placques.  My lovely and speedy friend Bernadette actually got 2, she was first in her age group and 2nd overall for the race.

"Agent 99" got first in his age group (60 - 69) finishing in 26-something, if I remember correctly.  Here he is with our 'favorite race model" Bernadette.

    EPILOG

A very pleasant way to spend a Sunday morning.   Nice event for a good cause, nice race course venue, lots of friendly participants, both 4-legged and 2-legged. There were also some nice door prizes (Road ID certificates, certificates to local food places, and so forth) - none of which I won for the 2nd race in a row for this weekend -  and, of course, I loved interacting with lots of the doggies there!   Would definitely recommend this one to my fellow runners.
