Marathon fueling options (Read 80 times)

Love the Half

I've struggled trying to chew and swallow the solids at any kind of race pace (except ultra jogger pace)

It's easier for me to down a gel 50-75 yards before the water table and wash it down with some Gatorade.

I know the gel is purely a mental boost most of the time, but it works for me.

I'm the same way even with a gel.  It's one thing to take in something in training but it's a whole different ballgame to try to stomach it at race pace.

    Short term goal: 17:59 5K

    Mid term goal:  2:54:59 marathon

Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life.  (I started running at age 45).

    Brrrrrrr

    Uffda

Last summer I experimented a lot with fueling sources. I would only use jelly beans or chews during a LR or maybe something like an ultra where I'd be going at a slower pace. I got pretty good at consuming gels at race pace, so I normally take that with water. I did make the mistake of taking a gel with powerade once or twice and boy that messes with your stomach.

I haven't yet tried out honey stingers, but those are next on my list.

Gels with caffeine are more than just a mental boost for me.

+1  Until they make caffeinated Gatorade I am sticking with Gu.
