Running in the dark (Read 345 times)

I've been considering getting one of those.  I have a full vest but I hate it.  Thanks for that review.

OP, I wear reflective bands around my ankles and have been told they are very effective due to the movement.

Get one, you'll love it. I picked one up a month ago. You can adjust it nicely to fit over whatever you have on. I always disliked the "movement" of my vest and these you can tighten up just right.

OP:  I wear a head lamp as well. I'd like to try knuckle lights but I'm not a fan of stuff in my hands when I run. Whatever you do, be seen. And as others have written just assume that no driver sees you and be very defensive when crossing intersections, etc.

I run with Knucklelights and wave them around like crazy when an oncoming car approaches.  I wear clothes w/reflective stuff on them too.  I have the Xinglet and while most people love it, I wore it 2xs and the straps and belt just annoyed me.  I should really give it another shot, though, b/c so many people do swear by it.

When I first started running with the Xinglet, it was loose and bugged the crap out of me.  But once I cinched down the straps so it was snug around my torso, it was great.

I also use Knuckle Lights and I LOVE them. I don't wear any reflective-specific gear, but I always wear light-colored shirts and some of my capris/tights have reflective stripes on them. Plus my shoes light up like Christmas trees.

I was surprised - my RP and I were running last night and we were coming across a neighborhood intersection with a guy in a truck waiting to turn. We ran up to him and both had every intention of running behind him, but he actually backed up and let us go in front. That's the first time that's EVER happened.

I have a few reflective arm bands, including obe that has LED lights, and I put them on my biceps and by my ankles. But I don't run at night, I run just before sunrise so unless it's really cloudy it's not all that dark out.

          Barking Mad To Run

I've been running at dusk a few nights, with a torch

This gave me mental images of you chasing Frankenstein into the castle, lol.  I do realize, however, that the English use 'torch" to describe what we Americans call a flashlight.  Or vice versa.

Being retired military, I have used to good effect those reflective belts.  When you go on a military base, you see the trainees wearing these all the time - which is required for them by regulation when they go out at night - and they are quite reflective and can be seen from a long ways off, both from the front and the back.

I tried checking out knuckle lights, but I couldn't find any in stock.

Yep. You pretty much have to order it from their website.  I have a pre-order I'm waiting to be fullfilled myself. They've been out of stock as they have upgraded the product to Knuckle Lights 2.0 and I guess they were having factory issues. I got an email from Dan Hopkins at Knuckle Lights which said the issues are all worked out and that all pre-orders will be delivered Dec 7-12th.

A little bit of a wait to get them, but from what I've heard they are well worth it.

Is this thread still alive? There are already a lot of minimal looking vests that can be strapped on even from what you already wear. Most are lightweight but still have the reflective needs covered Smile
