Ladies: Athletic Amenorrhea? (Read 162 times)

Trail Monster

Wondering if anyone has dealt with this. Everything I'm reading says its caused by too much exercise plus a restricted diet. I am 5' 6" and 135 lbs and don't watch what I eat at all. I had my body composition tested about 18 or so months ago and was 22.8% body fat (under 16% is considered too low). I'm sure I'm leaner now despite being the same weight but maybe only by a percent or two. Im averaging about 40 MPW right now. The last few months AF has been later and later and now it hasn't shown up at all. Does anyone have any insight into causes and cures that doesn't revolve around disordered eating or low body weight? Thanks!

I don't think you're overdoing anything. Cycles will change over the years... I used to be a bit irregular. But now I'm like a clock and I run 80 mpw and have a BMI of 18.1 (not sure about my body fat though). So I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. But how late are we talking about, here?

New stress? Illness? Sudden increase in mileage? Pregnancy?

Nope. February was lower mileage than the last three months. Still hate my job but its no more stress than usual. I did have the stomach flu for two days but I was already late. I'm going to test tomorrow but there's really no chance I'm pregnant. I'm going to make a doctor appointment for hormone and vitamin testing if AF doesn't show this weekend.

My husband put me on BCP when my period changed and it only happens when I do multiple marathons.  Mine has not gone away just one crazy.  Can you visit your OBGYN just to make sure?

Thats the plan I think. Was just hoping someone else had BTDT. I'm thinking I need to get checked for PCOS and then hormone imbalance or vitamin deficiency. Maybe thyroid too. That's all I can figure out.

You did do a trail race recently, didn't you? Last weekend or the one after? Maybe it caused a little delay this month...

My periods went from 7 days to 3 when I increased my mileage so it might be the miles. I didn't have anything else, but I just discovered a small hormonal imbalance...or premenopause, not sure.

Nope. I thought it might once I got below 120lbs as I had heard that for some reason, that is some magical number that makes you start/keep menstrating(dunno where I heard it, but out of all the useless info in my life, I held onto that little diddy....headscratch?!)

Tell that to all the naturally petite women out there with multiple childrenWink

50mpw+, 115lbs(for 2 plus years) and still like clockwork, no hormonal BC.

Sounds like you have some sortof deficiency that your body is saying makes child bearing not healthy at this point. Definately doc seeing time.

No trail race, 20 mile road race, on Saturday and I was already late. I'm flattered you remembered that though.

guess I will plan to call Monday for an appointment. I'm okay if my cycles want to get longer but predictability is key. I just want to keep running and be healthy. Maybe I will magically get faster once I get this sorted out. Smile

Okay, not trail, but it was hilly, right? :-)

I know that if I'm sick with even just a cold, I can be delayed a few days... And if I race a marathon, I'll be delayed as well. So maybe for you it was the two factors combined?
