Let's here it for the girls. 7 of the top 9 were female including first place.

My training is going real well so I was very confident that I was going to PR today. My previous best in the 5k was 20:59. I set a goal of 19:59 but felt like 20:30 was a more reachable time for this race. My plan was to try to start out at 6:20 and hold it for 3.1 miles.

    First mile – 6:19.

At the starting line a group of kids from the Metroplex Striders running club showed up. I graciously allowed them to stand in front of me. I know how high schoolers run. They were going to go out at a 5:30 pace. I had absolutely no intention of starting out at that kind of speed.

I was right about them and I did a solid job starting out with the pace I wanted. As I hit the first half mile marker, my time was 3:05. Slightly fast but still within range of my plan. The second half mile was ran at closer to a 6:30 pace. I was happy to cross mile one  at sub-20 pace, but did not think I would be able to hold it.

    Second mile – 6:35 .

This is usually my slowest mile. Once again this was the case. As I approached the turnaround for the 5k, I saw that I was in pretty decent shape. I noticed the six Striders girls and then five guys. I thought I was running in twelfth place I was actually in fourteenth place because there was a guy and women who were running about a minute ahead of us. Two of the guys were men and three were teenagers.

After the turnaround I tried to keep the group of four guys within striking distance. They were about 20 seconds ahead of  me. I focused on this group for the second half of mile two and first half of mile three. Mentally, it felt hard to keep up such a fast pace. I wanted to take a small break from the speed, but I refused to take a break.

    Third mile – 6:32.

I was very excited during this mile. I knew I was heading for a very nice PR. I kept telling myself to hold on and break 20:30. My attitude was very positive. One of the teenagers faded. As I started passing him he temporarily speed up. He soon yielded to me as he saw that I was running a steady and was not accelerating to pass him. The three other males were able to stay a comfortable 20 - 30 seconds ahead of me.

It got interesting at about  2.75 miles as I heard the pitter patter of little feet. It was actually, a small stampede of little feet. A couple 14 year olds (one boy and one girl) started their kick behind me. I could feel them close behind me. They had an awesome kick.

    Final kick 5:34 pace

I went into my kick as I passed the 10k six mile marker. The pursuit from behind gave me more motivation to kick strong. I also wanted to get below 20:30. I had an outstanding kick even though I didn’t have anything left in the tank. I crossed the finished line and was very happy. I am kicking myself for not congratulating those two youngsters behind me who had such an excellent final kick but I couldn’t think straight after the finish.

Thanks Mitch. I am faster than I ever thought I could get. I am doing great right now. Running very healthy.

jneiltt - It was a very good course for a PB. It is very flat and 100% on the street so it is easy to pass people. I ran a race on the west side of White Rock in August and didn't care for that one because it was 100% on cement running trails, harder to pass, and way too many bikes whizzing by. The only thing I don't like about the east side is that it is a pain for me to get to the race.

Amazing Dan.  You are showing us that the body and age have no bounds, and that one can push and push till it hurts.  Here's to a sub-20:00 by the end of March 2013.

                      Smaller By The Day

Dang Dan!  Sounds like you ran a hell of a race.  I've been reading a lot lately about getting out to a faster start.  Do you think it helps?  I'm always interested in race day strategy.  I'm not as fast as you, but I'm considering going out faster at my next 5K.

Congrats on your race Dan. You seem to be making great progress, and I bet that feeling of running healthily feels euphoric. Keep up the good work, and best of luck getting to your big goal.

I'm actually working on slowing down my start. I tend to lose more time in mile 2 than I gain in mile 1 if I go out too fast.
