Barking Mad To Run

    INTRO

I am Scott aka Scottydog aka Scotty Dogg, runner since 1983, cancer survivor, retired Air Force, employee of University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), friend of dogs, fun-runner, and all-around goofball.  In 2003 I had spinal arthritis flare up and ever since then I’ve done the run/walk method since it hurts my back too much now to run continuously with no walk breaks.  I’m on what I call my “2F Plan” which stands for Fun and Finish.  At events that I now do for fun I carry my camera, chase “Great Legs” to help motivate my slow old man self to keep moving forward, and take pictures before, during, and after the race. Sometimes I even get a nice post-race sweaty hug from one of the Great Legs ladies.   I then do a pictorial race report of my events.  I also carry dog biscuits with me to treat any dogs I may meet at a run, hence my nickname “Scottydog.” Here is yet another of my Race Reports With Photos, and my thanks to all the people I interacted with for their graciousness and good humor in letting me take photos of them.

This was my 45th race of 2015 and my second race of 3 races done for the weekend of Sep 19 - 20, 2015. After having done the Zero Prostate 5K at 8 a.m on Sep 19, I did this event in the evening of Sep 19.  The Alamo Beer 8K and 16K is part of a series of training races done by "Scallywompus"  in San Antonio to help prepare runners and walkers for the San Antonio Marathon and Half Marathon.  You can sign up for the whole series or you can simply choose, like me. to do certain races in the series.  This is a nice series of events, with really great after-parties.  I'm not training for anything these days, so I do the events for the after-parties, lol.  For this event I did the 8K (4.96 miles).  I finished in 58:59 and out of the 5 people in my age group, I finished dead last, lol.  I expected no less!

    BEFORE THE START

This event was held at Lady Bird Johnson Park, which is about a 10-minute drive from where I live, sweeet!  Start time for the 16K was 6:01 PM, followed by the 8K folks starting at 6:40. I arrived onsite at about 5:35 and wandered around getting some pre-start photos.  Quite a nice turn-out for this event and there was a strong presence of my fellow veteran team members of Team RWB (Red White and Blue) San Antonio chapter.

My friends Darlene and Adrian of B.I.S.H. foundation who put on a really good holiday run, Santa Antonio 5K, raising money for research for finding a cancer cure.  Even though I can't wear the Santa Suit provided to all runners - makes me itch like crazy, lol - I love doing their event, taking photos, and then there is a really great after-party.  Yeah, I'm plugging the race for them, it's worth it!    Nov 29 this year...y'all come on out!

    AFTER THE FINISH

Nice post-run party. Bart, the Scallywompus owner, really knows how to do it up.  Pizza, sausage-on-a-stick, various types of beer, some kind of 'wine cooler' thingy, post-run massage, et cetera, et cetera....paaarty!   It was kind of humid out there in this park and lots of woods in this park. so there were mosquitoes, etc., out there...and so there was even some post-run repellent spraying being offered to those who wanted it.

    EPILOG

Love doing Bart's events!  Always a lot of great people at his events, very friendly atmosphere, nice courses - some of them, at times quite challenging too; I recall a certain night-time event golf course route - and, as said, great after-parties.  Definitely would recommend the Scallywompus events to my fellow runners and walkers, you won't be disappointed - well, maybe with yourself at times , but certainly not with the offered courses or the great stuff after.  Nice tech tees for participants, unique age-group and overall winner awards, just a very nice race experience, all-in-all.   Much thanks, of course, to all the organizers, volunteers, law enforcement, sponsors, etc., who made this all happen for we participants.
