A 4:59 mile is way, way beyond my current ability and I have a 1:25 half marathon and an 18:38 5K. You need a sub 17:30 5K to have even a remote shot at 4:59.
Short term goal: 17:59 5K
Mid term goal: 2:54:59 marathon
Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life. (I started running at age 45).

You don't need a sub 18 5k, but if you can't run sub 18 in the 5k, you need to be able to go in the neighborhood of 2:10 in the 800.
Coalition for a Free and Independent New Jersey
My game goal is 2600 miles, but I am really shooting for 3000. I don't know if that will be possible, therefore I only listed 2600. I want to PR in every distance, which will be a breeze IF I reach my weight goal. I want to end the year around 155lbs, but I will be starting it around 185lbs. IF I make my weight goal in the first half of the year, I would like to run a <1:30 HM by the end of the year. I will either run a FM in December or hold off until 2014 (depending on my weight loss progress). My New Year's resolution will be to give up Diet Coke, at least as a daily drink. I won't be hard on myself if I have on every once in a while.

I can't figure out a mileage goal because I don't know what my training plans will be like yet. Which is why I procrastinated in signing up for 2013in2013 until I missed the cutoff I currently run in the ballpark of 10mpw but want to build a lot of base before planning a modified HM plan to use to train for my 10 miler in June, and then based on that race I will pick a plan for my half in October. So, as a new runner, I can't even begin to predict how many miles I expect to run in the whole year. But, I digress. Primary goal is to keep running all year!!!
I have 3 races that I'm registered for so far, but there should hopefully be a lot more!!! Goals:
10K 1/26: PR (current 1:07:47)
10 miler 6/18(first): this goal will likely be adjusted as I train, but right now I'm saying under 2 hours and 10 minutes
Half marathon 10/13 (first): just finish is the goal
Sub-30 5K at some point (current PR 33:33)
PRs: 5K- 28:16 (5/5/13) 10K- 1:00:13 (10/27/13) 4M- 41:43 (9/7/13) 15K- 1:34:25 (8/17/13) 10M- 1:56:30 (4/6/14) HM- 2:20:16 (4/13/14) Full- 5:55:33 (11/1/15)
I started a blog about running :) Check it out if you care to
You are probably right, but that won't stop me from trying. I ran 5:27 this year with no specific mile training. I also ran 4:38 (and a 2:02 800) when I was in high school. I have terrible endurance, but I can still run a decent 800. I tried to set very hard goals for 2013. I wanted to have a about a 50% chance to accomplish each one. Perhaps my mile goal is too aggressive. We'll see.
1. Enjoy running and stay healthy.
2. First full marathon in February.
3. Run 1000 miles.
Are we there, yet?
Nonsense!!! I couldn't break 19 for 5K when I ran 4:56. It depends as much on your natural speed and your training focus as it does on your endurance.
2024 Races:
03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles
05/11 - D3 50K 05/25 - What the Duck 12-Hour
06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour.
Will run for scenery.
Primary Goals:
Other goals :
Stupid feet!
Stupid elbow!
A) sub 3 marathon
B) sub 17 5K (This will be harder.. way harder. Doing the raw speed work to get there might not play well with my D training. We shall see, but not until winter is over.)
C) Climb 4 or more Adirondack high peaks
D) Spend a bunch of time getting my house and land the way I want them
It depends as much on your natural speed and your training focus as it does on your endurance.
Agreed... this makes me want to go run a mile now and find out.
Thinking that if my first split in a 5K is around 5:30, I can sure go a hell of a lot faster if there aren't 2.1 miles more

Run 1200-1500+ miles and have fun doing it.
