Go figure
18.38 miles, 7:14 pace, topping off 100 miles this week. That may have been one of the best runs I've ever had. It didn't start off well as I got there and realized I had forgotten my handheld and GU. But, I figured I ate a big dinner last night so I'd have plenty of fuel to burn. It was pretty cold (18, feels like of 5) and windy, but I was strong the whole run. I even felt good enough to run the last 1.38 under MP.
Hope you all enjoyed your runs as much today.
Trying to find some more hay to restock the barn
12.6 miles in the books, the first 5 of which were run into the stiffest, coldest wind. My hands felt like frozen damn bricks when I finally made the turn away from it.
It was a good, solid, steady run. And I didn't think about food once!
During the last mile, I began to feel a slight pinch on my left knee every fourth step or so. No pain, just a pinch. We all know what that was so I won't even say the word.
I will go back to the Lunarglides for my next couple of runs, then change the insoles in my DST's for a little more stability. I will probably also limit the distance I run in them to 10 miles for the time being, just to be safe.
All in all today's run was cold, but good. It was a four star effort, but I am glad to be out of that crap.

Fantastic. Beast Mode!!
<3
Wish I could say I did!
Decided not to wait any longer for it to warm up, went out with a temp of 15, fells like 3.
The cold I can manage. What was more difficult was the dead, stiff legs almost right from the outset. Grunted out 18.04 miles.
Did not run yesterday, but ran 4 days in a row before that, which is unusual for me, and the 4th day was some heavy speed work. And a PB in miles for the week. So I guess I should have expected a rough time. I guess that's why we train!
I think Higdon calls for a cutback next week, which sounds good to me. (Not that I am strictly following his plan....) But if I feel like this on race day, I am in trouble.
Dave
Dave...Sorry about the rough run. Chalk it up to a character builder. Don't worry about race day...taper and race day atmosphere will get you there. 18 miles to finish off a mileage PR is nothing to scoff at.
LRB...Sounds like you've got a good plan to nip that knee ache early. Being cautious with any new shoe is probably smart. Great job on the 4star effort.
Baboon...Thanks! I just hope I'm not spending all my beast mode efforts too soon!
SIAR: Wow, just WOW! What a week, what a run!!! In that weather, after that week - to pull off a run like that is nothing short of incredible! I'm so super duper impressed!!!! Keep up the incredible work!!!
Dave: I'm sorry the 18 were rough today. Boo, hiss. I had one of those to. Yuck.
LRB: Incredible job on those 12 miles today!
<-------- Disappointed.18 mile run, including the last 10 at MP. Overall: 7:23 pace; 10 MP miles: 7:13 pace; 8 initial miles: 7:36 pace. The good: ummm, the only good thing I can come up with is that this was my fastest LR overall ever (by 1 second - I ran 20 miles at 7:24 two weeks ago). The bad: I went out too fast. When I got to the last 10 MP miles, they felt way, way too hard to be sustainable for much longer. I don't know if I could've run one more mile at that pace. The ugly: Honestly, I am disappointed in this run, because I realize I am not quite yet in 3:10/7:15 pace shape, but I think I am somewhere between that and 3:15/7:26 pace shape. It kind of sucks to find out you are slower than you hoped you would be, you know? Perspective: My last MP run on 1/31, I ran a 20 miler with the last 8 at MP, and an overall pace of 7:59. MP miles: 7:30. First 12 miles: 8:17. My run today was lots faster/harder. So, yay? :eye roll: I'm still disappointed.
Just one of those days ma. The next time you try this run, you may nail it!
SIAR, what can I say man you are killing it!
Way to gut it out Dave! I got tired of waiting because it seemed it was not going to matter.
Zel, I do plan to tinker with gels once my long runs are into the mid teens. I initially got the idea last year running Detroit when I passed the gel station at mile 16 and thought to myself, "Hmm, I probably could have used one of those". Thanks for the thought!
You are welcome blue!
Congrats Damaris!
RMT3b...eh, nothing wrong with being a little disappointed after not quite hitting what you wanted. Still, I think you know just be looking at your 1/31 run you're making huge gains. You don't need to be able to go 3:10/7:15 today...just in a couple months. I have total faith that you'll be there by then come race time, or even further. As for the going out to fast...sometimes I think those runs where you have to shift gears midway are harder than the ones that are steady state (like what I did today). Anyway, just another run, right? Time for the next one
kristin10185, I'm happy that your ITB is behaving itself.
PGD, enjoy your run around the lake. That sounds beautiful.
Sarah, amazing pace for such a long and hilly run.
SIAR, 18.38 at 7:14?!?!? Damn, that's fast.
Rick, nice long run.
DaveP MI, great job banging out the 18.04.
Heidi, wonderful long run. It seems to have been a great learning experience.
Weights and a marathon-pace run are done. At a 1.0 incline and 6.7mph (8:57), I race 8.03 miles in 1:12:00. My legs feel like jelly. At least I was able to test my Ride 5s on a faster run. I like Wednesday, I'll do the same with my Intuition 1.5s.
Basya...So nice when new shoes feel good and you don't feel like you wasted the purchase. Great run for you to push through some wobble legs. Nice work with the weights too, as always.
Team TJ
3.2 miles done to end the week at >20 again.
Running for TJ because he can't.
5K Specialist
Heidi - You did awesome. I couldn't hit 3 miles at HMP during a 9 mile run 10 days before my HM. You will be able to break 3:10 with tapering and race day adrenaline.
Personal Bests:
800M - 2:38 (5/28/13) | 1 Mile -5:54 (5/28/13) | 3K - 11:55 (12/29/12) | 2M - 13:00 (12/1/12) | 5K - 20:00 (4/12/13) | 13.1M - 1:37:24 (2/3/13)
Great runs everyone.
I had my 10k this morning. Weather was cold, but not hideously so and I actually like it a bit on the cool side. I originally hoped just to match my PR from last year of 59:48. And running the first three in about the right pace for that (9:30-9:45) I tucked myself into a slightly faster group at the turn around and just told myself to keep up. Last 3 miles were 9:03, 8:54, and 8:24 for a finishing time of 57:04 and a 9:09 pace!
Of course, now I'm kicking myself a bit for not finding a way to shave off those last four seconds, but overall I'm happy with it.
SIAR, indeed, the Ride 5s were nice. I'm thinking of, when I can comfortably afford it, buying another pair ins a pair of Kinvara 3a, which I also liked, but didn't buy.

Sweet! You killed your PR! Tucking into that faster group after starting off smartly was such a wise decision and a great strategy for running a strong time. Those 4 secs are frustrating, but the full 2:48 you took off your PR tell the real story. Great effort.
Basya...I really should consider trying the Kinvaras again. I had the first ones, but I tore through the mesh upper very quickly. I liked the feel though, so maybe I should give them another shot.
