Wussing out or being sensible? Update - I ran the 14 miles! (Read 95 times)

Fear is a Liar

I have today off and planned on running 10-14 miles this morning. Got up at 6am and actually quite readily rolled out of bed. Checked weather and it was 21 with feels like 12 , I've run in that, so no problem there. The issue was the snow storm from yesterday. Before I got out of bed, I was mulling over in my head what my route would be. I couldn't string together any sort of mileage or even shorter loops that would have been snow and ice free. And then there would be the Monday morning rush hour drivers not expecting to see the "idiot runner" dressed in all my fluorescent glory. Even doing my 1/2 mile neighborhood loop wasn't looking too safe in the dark. So I retreated back into the warmth and safety of my bed. So, was I sensible or did I wuss out?

I'm so vegetarian I don't even eat animal crackers!

Wait until rush hour is over; less traffic and possibly a bit warmer.

This. Maybe even warm up enough for stuff to melt a little (doubtful), maybe some plows will come by & roads will get cleared. As long as you get your miles in, who cares when it happened? God forbid, the treadmill. Having the day off is a great opportunity to run whenever/wherever it is most convenient, you don't get that kind of flexibility on work days. If the day goes by & you did not get your run in, then yes, you wussed out.

            LOL

I sort of feeling like a wuss for logging so many treadmill miles lately.  The cold doesn't bother me but I am scared to hell of reinjuring my knee on some ice.  Since my knee is still healing, all it takes is one small slip and tweak to set me back two months (it happened the first time I had surgery).  So maybe I'm a wuss, but I've come to be ok with that.

I wouldn't call it wussing out. I tweaked my knee last Sunday on the ice and haven't been able to run since.

Last Thursday and Friday, I did not run not because of the arctic temps and single digit wind chills, but because I had enough of running in them.

On Saturday I turned around 1.5 miles into a 6 mile run because I just was not feeling the relentless snow, the howling snow wind and more single digit wind chills.

Sunday I never actually made it to the park to run making an impromptu beeline instead to the treadmill where I promptly hopped off after running .25 miles (yes, a quarter mile) and called it a day.

So I totaled a whopping 3.25 miles the past four days because of this shit weather we have had.  My point to all of that drivel?  If you are a wuss then I am a...

If I wuss out I can't live with the guilt of wussing out.  That being said, I also don't do anything that would put me in harm's way.

As LTH would say, none of us get paid to do this. It's a hobby, so it's supposed to be enjoyable for us. We all have our limits. I prefer running in the warmth of summer (although preferably not 26.2 miles in sweltering heat). I suffer in the cold. And I start work at 7:30 am and like to go to bed late, so you will never see me run early in the morning. So for me, mornings are out and cold runs as well. If that makes a wuss of me, then that's fine. I'm not doing this to earn the title of badass, I leave that for others to claim. Gustav, I don't think you're a wuss for having listened to your instincts.

If it's just cold then I'd call you a wuss. But if there is legitimate safety concerns than you are being sensible. No use risking major injury for one run. I hope you find a way to get your miles later!

Agreed.  I took a really hard spill on ice one day when I was just looking to get in a few extra miles.  Fortunately, I didn't get seriously hurt (sprained wrist) but how much would that 4 mile run have been worth in terms of lost fitness if I had twisted an ankle and been out for several weeks?  When it comes to unsteady footing, I "wuss out" pretty much every time.  Learned my lesson from that spill.

I'm in the same situation - it's not that cold, in the '20s, but there is lots of snow on the side of the road and icy strips across the roads.  I will probably end up on the TM this afternoon.
