Because I can't make running decisions alone.....get up early & run or skip? (Read 273 times)

Tomorrow the hubs and I have a date. He has a company Christmas party and the kids are going to their aunt's house for the evening. Tomorrow is a double run day in my schedule. I get up at 6:30 am and run my usual morning 3 miler, the after we eat dinner, I run another 5 at 6:30pm. Well, that won't work tomorrow and I can't get away this evening to do it at a reasonable hour nor will Friday work because Saturday is my LR day of 10 miles.

So my only options are: to run my double together as a mid range run(8 miles) at, gasp, 5am so that I can be ready to take daycare kids in by 7am OR do my usual 3 miler and skip the 5 miler altogether?

I am in full marathon training for a race May 5th. I am up to 37 miles a week. I have been running my morning 3 milers since August. And doubles since September on Tuesday & Thursdays. I have NOT missed any training runs so far in my schedule.

Well, what do I do fellow runners?

If you're anything like me, I HATE to be rushed, so I'd be a frothy pissy mess if I were trying to cram a run in. It's the holidays, stuff like this will happen every once in a while. Just don't make it a habit, right? I'd probably pick a time I feel more comfortable waking up and still be a productive member of society and run as much as I could in that time.

But since I'm not running doubles, and probably half your mileage, you may want to take that with a grain of salt.

What about meeting in the middle and doing 5 in the morning and skipping the 3? I don't think skipping 3 will do much harm, if any.

Yeah I think I would do the 5 miler and skip the 3 but thats me!

I would get up early and do the 8- but then again I dont think 5am is that early.

I'd get as many as you can get in early on: if 8 is too much at once, then 7 or 6 miles??  That is what I would do!  Have fun on your date at the Christmas party!

One miss won't make a lick of difference in May. i was thinking along the lines of MJ5- do a somewhat longer than 3, but not the whole day's 8 in the morning. In fact I was thinking 5 also. If you could squeeze in a mile just before getting cleaned up and dressed for the party it might mentally make you feel like you got some double in, but not needed if that would be more trouble.  Or a mile or two tonight and then 5 tomorrow and you will be close, but also not needed.

ETA- Actually Heidi would run like 12 tonight and explain why she had to "cut it short." Clown

This is what I was going to say.  but also if you still only get in your normal 3, I don't think it's going to hurt you skipping the 5.  Especially if you haven't missed any runs yet and the race isn't until May

See, that's why I love you guys & gals! I hadn't thought of maybe just taking a longer run x 2 days and maybe make both 3 milers on Thursday & Friday 5 milers instead. Then really, I am only short 1 mile over the 2 day period(if I did my math right, 5x2=10 and 3x2=6 +5=11). I'd rather get up 2 days in a row at 5:50 and squeeze 2 more miles in than usual than the thought of trying to do 8 at 5am on the morning of a party where I might be dead tired instead of fun!

                      Sounds pretty peachy to me.

Wow, I would take a rest day. May is a LONG time from now, and you won't start training for months. Enjoy your day off.

nbt: Sounds like a good plan. My MO involves constantly doing arithmetic toward mileage goals (if I get in 5 today I can do 7 tomorrow and then I'll need 6 on Friday to get to ...

Enjoy the date and the night with the kiddos out Smile

Actually, you know what, I will. You are right. May is a very long time from now and I never schedule cutback weeks, I just let them happen naturally. I haven't had a cutback week in nearly 2 months now. I think I will happily miss my Thursday evening 5 miler and not feel badly about it. And I might even have an extra beer with dinner. Thanks for reminding me to enjoy other things besides running.

I was showered and getting dressed in work clothes after my run at that time...
