CQ CQ Friday Penguins (Read 22 times)

PADRunner

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

          Hi Pens...

Busy weekend, as usual, starting off with 8 easy miles tonight. Today is haircut day so I may has well shave the mustache. I have gone from a Fu-Manchu (Hulk Hogan), to the Iron Sheik, to Jacques Clouseau. I hope my kids recognize me.  DW and DD are prom dress shopping, I have a LR tomorrow, DD swim practice tomorrow, and Easter Sunday.

          Enjoy.

          From the Internet.

            Hi pens!

Tried to get in a water running workout and had to bail because something in the hip flexor/groin region was just not cooperating. Was planning to run tomorrow since my shin has been back to normal for the last few days, I'm hoping it's a pool-specific angry crotch muscle - I am going to be PISSED if I have to take more time off from running for an injury sustained while cross-training through a different injury >:C

            Jill.

            Penguin Power!

HI Guys (and Gals) - I'm new to this group and relatively new to running (and certainly have full blown Penguin status).  I started with c25k last May.  So far I've run a 4 mile race, a 10k, and 2 HM.  Planning on running 3 today and hopefully will drag DH out for 6 with me tomorrow.

              Upcoming Races: Run as One 4M (4/24) * Japan Run 4M (5/8) * Brooklyn Half (5/21)

Hi ya Sapf!  Its always so exciting when we get new people!  Welcome, and it does sounds like you've done a lot in less than a year.  I'm always amazed at how quickly some people blossom.  Very cool that you and your DH run together sometimes also.  Anyway, I'm Cherie, and very nice to meet you.  Please keep coming back!

Lauren-- hopefully it was just one of those odd weird pains that just hurts but really isn't indicative of a real injury.  They just happen sometimes.  Sadly the older you get the more frequent they get.  One day my ankle hurts, the next my knee, and the day after that it'll be the top of the foot on the other side.  I never know.  I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that one more day might fix it for you.

DR-- CQ, CQ to you!  I think.... hmmm... Wonder if I used that correctly?  Ten-four!

Taking a rest day before my race tomorrow.  Its kinda sad though because its such a cool overcast day.  Woulda been a perfect running day after all the warm, sunny weather this week.  I'm hoping it'll be like this tomorrow also.

                  Anway, Roger and Out, everyone!

                  Cherie

                    What does CQ mean?

PADRunner - good luck on your 5k tomorrow.  Have fun.

Damaris - enjoy your six this evening.  Do you still run with your husband, or are your paces and schedules too different?

Jack - how long have you had the mustache?  DH has had a beard for most of the time I've known him (22 years) but occasionally he'll shave it off for a while.  I enjoy seeing his face, but it takes a bit of getting used to.  I hope your LR goes well.  How is the PF?

Lauren - try a walk this afternoon and see if you can stretch out the sore muscle.  I hope you get your run in tomorrow.

sapf -   Welcome to the penguins.  That's a lot of racing for a new runner.  Are you training for anything now?

Cherie - I hope your mountain race tomorrow goes well and that it stays cool and cloudy for you.  Enjoy the rest today.

AFM:  I woke up a bit stiff and sore, so I may do a couple of miles to loosen up or I may just take a hot bath and rest up for tomorrow.

                    Amazonian Princess

                      Happy finally-Friday!

It was kinda cool hearing/seeing what y'all were enjoying for lunch yesterday. I didn't get a chance to really respond because work is still so hectic and the temp I asked for still hasn't started yet. Darned stinkin' background checks take forever if you want to work in a hospital, even as an admin. Went for a short run after work then to the Apple store, which is one of DH's versions of heaven. If they sold Kona coffee, too, I might never get him out of there

So, if my schedule is slammed and I only have a short window to run, is it bad to run twice a day? I would think more miles would be better but a magazine article I read gave me the impession that "doubles" are only for advanced runners. Still, if in one day I run/walk one and run the other is there any positive or negative effect?

                      P.S. Hi and welcome, sapf!

                      I can. I will. I am.

So far, I've been running with him twice a week, mainly because I am not training.  Once I start training for SF, I'll see if I can keep some of my easy runs with him.

Ginny: I've had the mustache only for about six months. I grew it for a race and shaved it into the Hulk Hogan. I just got tired of it, though I will grow it again to see what I can come up with. It's much more maintenance than I thought. The PF is behaving and tomorrow should be a good test. I hope to go 15 or 16 miles, nice and easy.

sapf: Hi and welcome. Where are you from?

                            What does CQ mean?

CQ originated in morse code as a general call to anyone listening to respond. It was thought to be a kind of short hand for seek you. It's still use today on voice communications.

A morse call would be like CQ CQ CQ DX DE N5WJS.

Voice would be CQ CQ CQ DX this is N5WJS.

                            Barking Mad To Run

Rest day today.  5K in Luckenbach Texas tomorrow morning, my 25th race of 2014.  Maybe Willie and Waylon will be there.   For doing one of my photo reports  on this event, the RD comped me my entry too, nice!    Yesterday I did 3.3 miles easy on nice soft trails at a local park.  However, I forgot to pack my running shirt, so I threw some business the RD's way - least I could do since he comped my entry in not only this race but a couple of upcoming ones too -  by stopping at his specialty running store on the way to the park and picking up a new running shirt.  The temp was only 63 degrees but storms were threatening and it was VERY humid, felt like running in a sauna.  The park was nice and quiet, I guess most folks stayed away cuz of the potential thunderstorms, usually this park is quite busy all the time. The back half of the run was very nice.  First half, not so good.  Lesson learned...do not eat fast food for lunch - I had Chik-Fil-A - on a day you are going to run after work. After I was about half-way finished with my run/walk, I had to stop and recycle some of that meal to Mother Nature.  I think, for a change, instead of them startling me, I startled the park deer, lol, cuz they took off into the brush when I began my recycling process.  Felt much better after that and had a nice back half of the outing and a good strong finish.

Good luck with your 5K tomorrow, PAD.

Happy miles tonite, Damaris.  Wishing you some COOL weather.  Probably won't happen for you, but I'll wish it for you anyway.

What...shave the mustache!     Say it ain't so, Jack!   I can't do it anymore.  I tried once and had to grow it back quick as I could.  My stache is just part of who I am now.  Me and Tom Selleck, lol.  He gets a lot more money for his, though, than I do for mine.  Wow, busy weekend for you and family, good luck with it all!

Sorry about your sore spots, Lauren, and hopefully not a full-blown injury that will keep you on the bench.

So far I've run a 4 mile race, a 10k, and 2 HM.   Welcome, sapf.  After all those races, I think you are an Advanced Penguin now.

Good luck with your race tomorrow, Cherie.  7 miles up and down a mountain!  Since I'm only doing a 5K - and I think we're on the same time zone aren't we? - I may finish before you, so I'll have a post-race beer while you're still out there and send out good cheering vibes for you.

Good luck to you tomorrow too, Ginny.  I dunno what PAD's "CQ" means...but in the military it meant "Charge of Quarters."   I only volunteered for it once during my military days...and found you you didn't get any quarters to spend for doing it, so the heck with that!

Baconista, I don't think doubles are just for advanced runners.  And it also depends on HOW you run.  If you run hard for both runs it might be tough if you're not adequately trained for that...but if you have some kind of time constraint and just want to split a run up into two to your daily goal miles in and just run easy, I don't see a problem with that.   Heck, I'm certainly no advanced runner and I've certainly done back-to-back races - one in the morning and one in the evening - and haven't had a problem.  Just run wisely if you do it.
