Bugs

Good work Shan! P2R, -27 here, so glad I'm not running in it. I've decided to start some aqua-jogging again. Mine only ache has been a shin-splint in my left leg but I have to condition my feet for no orthotics. The aqua jogging will allow my legs to heal up, while I revamp mileage. Oh aqua jogging, if I go MIA know I died of bordem in the pool.

    Dave

Great run, Shan. I did the same today and might not have gone out without all the encouragement. Work has reared its ugly head and I had to squeeze my run in today. That will be my excuse for ignoring the HRM. Amazing swing in weather, P2R. My run was in shorts as well today and the cold front is coming in tonight. Still, 46 tomorrow as a high so I may still be able to go out in shorts. We'll see if my schedule lets me get out. Aqua jogging sounds more painful than running, Bugs Wink

I ran a mile and I liked it, liked it, liked it.

Shan, we're proud of you...Keep those weekly miles and the long run to what Hal says, and you'll be fine. My back was killing me all day--probably from 13 hours driving the past 2 days, andrunning two fast yesterday. Was raining on the way home and quite windy. It was in the 50's though. Supposed to get cold and snow tonight/tomorrow. But, I was drawn to try and do what I could. Had 7 miles scheduled, and didnt go out expecting to do all 7. But once I started running, my back loosened up, and the rain stopped. The wind was mostly a cross wind so it wasnt horrible. Ran a very consistant 7 miles. All within 20 secs of each other except for the huge hill. And I am honestly motivated by the group- wanting to report a good run to you guys..and moving up the ranks in the 1000 mile club, and closing the gap in the 1500 mile club (should catch that bunny in a few weeks). Thanks for the help and encouragement!
Well, I set the alarm for 4:30 today, and it would have been about 60 degrees for my run. I turned it off and was rewarded with 27 degrees tonight. But, seeing some of your temperatures, let's not consider that complaining. 5 easy miles for me. I'm constantly amazed at how much better my knees/shins feel on 5 days and 30+ miles than they did on 3/4 days and 15/20 miles before I decided on the marathon.

          Oh Mighty Wing

Thanks guys!! P2R - shorts?? did you say shorts! That's amazing!! Bugs - aqua jogging might be a nice a nice way to help. They showed aqua jogging in that movie - not nearly as exciting as I wanted it to be!! it looked like a treadmill sunk to the bottom of the pool. For some reason I imagined it was actually running across a shallow (3-5 foot or so) pool. Dave - but you're glad you squeezed it in huh?!? Shorts! you got shorts too!! Murphy - that's great that you loosened up!! and yes driving 13 hours can do that to a person (we went sight seeing this summer from home - philly, pa - to SC, tooled around there for a couple days then headed to atlanta, then home.) Probably better you ran especially since you said it helped loosed you up. I agree i'm motivated by it too. Especially that darn bunny... i'm slowly catching him in the 1000mile group. Husker - Glad you got out there and didn't do a "i'll try again tomorrow"! Also glad to hear you actually feel better doing more!!!
            Mr Inertia

            Suspect Zero

ShanHas - Go for It! Bugs - Deena Kastor won Chicago after doing tons of aqua joggin due to injury. We'll expect similar results from you. I'm so glad I got my run in yesterday when it was 35 and windy. This morning is mid teens and WINDY - I'm talking 25-30 MPH winds with gusts up around 55 MPH. Was up all night, house shaking, DD complaining, dogs whining, garbage cans blowing down the street. Had a rough day yesterday. TP said something that really struck a chord with me and made me feel a bit better. "Sometimes my morning run is the only thing that keeps me out of thge police blotter"
I had to vent to someone and you're the lucky ones to get to read it, sorry. I had a physical today because I hadn't been to the doc for a really long time and I promised my DW I would before running a marathon. I told him one of the reasons I was there was because I was planning on running a marathon and wanted to make sure everything was OK. He had to ask how far it was (I seriously thought he was kidding at first), then asked me if you ran it all at once or if it was a bunch of events (think he might have been trying to describe a tri). Finally, he tells me about how bad that is for your knees and how one of his doctor friends has horrible knees from years of running. He kept saying he couldn't understand why anyone would want to run like that. Guess I'd better find someone else if I ever get an injury serious enough to need a doc . . . It was all pretty disappointing. On a brighter note, it's supposed to be in the lower 50s today so my 8 miles tonight should be rather enjoyable. Calling for 2-5 inches of snow tomorrow, so we'll see if I get forced to the treadmill.

                Bugs

Inertia, Hym maybe I should I sign up for Chicago? I aquajogged for a good three weeks for Grandmas because of initial foot injury (that prompted the orthotic purchase) and it kept me in good shape. She ran on an under-water treadmill though and mine is just aqua jogging. She was running against resistance. I really need a jogging partner to run opposite against. HuskerB, Always OK to vent to us. You need a new doctor. But good news, You're healthy! Today is day one of the south beach diet. I'm only trying it do get rid of the sugar cravings and get down to race weight. After grumbling about no morning latte, I feel very good, and think I will not be digging into the corporate ice cream today.

                  Dave

I'm with Bugs on this one, Husker. Time for a new doc. Did he try to treat you with leeches too? Evil grin

I ran a mile and I liked it, liked it, liked it.

                      ? 4 Cash, Do use a waterproof MP3 player?

                      Bugs

                      Oh Mighty Wing

Mr. I - sorry you had a rough night. Hope today was better for you! Hey how's the veg thing going?? Bugs - so you are running around a pool? Good luck with south beach. Husker - you need a new doc!! Although I think a crazy insinuation and not getting the ok to run are very different things! So... plan said 5mi. Had a mtg after school, car's in the shop so a friend had to give me a lift home, and I had grad work to do... i'm sure you all see where this is going... so I went to the gym and did 4 on the dreadmill... yeah baby!!! I know - it's not 5... but considering i've never gone beyond 2 on the treadmill and it's my 3rd day in a row of running I am damn proud of myself! Big grin I feel pretty good actually! am icing my one leg because it feels a little tight but other than that I feel really good. Do think i might need to start stretching though
                        Cashmason

Bugs, Nope I dont use swimp3 player. I do know folks that do and like it. I used an mp3 for a few months running. But for the last year and half I don't even use that. I just take the hand held water bottles running hat and sunglasses and out the door I go. I am so interesting, I can keep myself entertained without the music. But sometimes the music would be nice. Husker, good thing you are a guy. Otherwise your doc would have told you, that you would lose your uterus while running too. Btw, a study by Stanford University found that running helps knees not hurt them. It was being overweight that caused permament knee damage, not running. I also post on the multi sport ( triathlon) forums on kickrunners.com. One of the posters is an orthopedic surgeon /triathlete. He is also the sports medicine doctor for a Div 1 University. There is one thread there, where you can ask him medical questions and he answers them as best he can. He knows sports injuries, but he will often tell you to check with a specialist if you think you have heart problems or things outside of orthopedics. He is pretty good though if you say the outside of your knee hurts, or your hip or low back hurts. Be sure to tell him what hurts, what you are doing when it hurts, like running uphill or I picked up my kid and then my back hurt type thing. Sometimes he tells you stuff you dont want to hear, like don't run your marathon next week, with a stress fracture. But he does try to give you advice that will allow you do continue to do what you love, like running or swimming.
Cash, thanks for the info. I've never seen a study stating that running wasn't bad for your knees, I just always assumed that it was OK. I was just amazed at what this guy said. Oh well, I'm not ever at the doc, I just had to get the permission slip for the DW. She's happy now, that's what counts. Great 8 miles for me tonight. They keep upping the snow forecast, which in Tulsa could cause citywide panic. Either way, looking more and more like the dreadmill for tomorrow.

I agree, you need a new doc. Amazing the old crap some will still try to dump on you. Bugs, after I said DH would run with you (in the Racing forum) he clicked on your profile, saw your sub 3:50 marathon and said OMG, what did I say I'd do?? She's fast!!! So, you may or may not have a partner... 5 miles on the TM today at the gym with dh. Fun to go with him, that's a highlight of this carpooling thing. My car got towed to the shop last night and it'll be awhile before I get it back, I'm sure. 3 miles at EZ 8:57 pace, 2 miles in the middle at Marathon Pace (8:34, or so I'd like to think is MP...) Shan, good for you! I was so afraid you were gonna say you bailed. ^5 to you, dear!

                              Oh Mighty Wing

erica - i knew at least one of you would think that! hehe given my great love for TM. it was funny at 3 i just wanted to get off, but i was like oh no i'm not going to post to the group that i only got 3 in. At 4 i was feeling a little ragged (legs not mind) and DF asked if I was almost done. So I figured 4 is pretty close and certainly well past my last TM attempt. So I said it was ok we could go. The secret was covering up the stupid 1/4 mile track on the screen. I like going with DF also! Hey you can always come to Delaware in May, your DH can keep me company hehe Ok so the DE mary has a participant limit. I couldn't figure out why untill i looked at the map. Loop 1: 10 miles, loop 2-4: 5.45 miles. Yes that's right there are loops. The race is run in the city i'm guessing because it's easier to close down streets, but I'm sure they only take you through good parts and the city isn't that big so there are loops.
