    Mornin' everyone.

Sounds like Bioguy was treated royally (and rightly so) at the conference this week - nice.

I hope everyone in the path of Barry is either hunkered down or has evacuated. I can't imagine the volume of water those folks are going to have to deal with.

Congrats to all of you for dealing with H&H conditions on your runs, walks and other workouts.

    What is a 'shandy'?

Speaking of workouts, I'll be out the door in a few to head up to Portsmouth to do the New Castle loop (approx 7 mi. - Henrun knows it well) before this morning's RW training session.

    Have a greta Saturday!

    Jay

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

Good morning Jay and others to follow.

My running club is making donations to our 3 high school cross country teams today after a local 5k race.  My husband just left as he's running it.  I'm heading out in an hour or so to be there for the gifting.  It should be enough to get new singlets for the teams.

My knee continues to be persnickety.  I had a good 4 miler yesterday on the cross country course but the old knee is telling me that might not have been such a good idea.  Today I'll just continue the knee strengthening exercises and do a lot of dog walking.  Happy Saturday all!

        ....mornin'.......

looks like we're just getting some showers from the hurricaine

hoping spacity and falconfixer are safe

          Good morning everybody!

I thought I would pop in, say hi, and let you know I'm still kickin'.  This week has been one thing after another with stuff to do.

We had our Cross Country Picnic, last night.  We go over all the rules and expectations with the team and their parents.  Each year, the head coach gives each of the assistants a part to cover.  I like going over our lettering guidelines and usually go prepared with a story to tell.  But Thursday, the head coach sent an email to all of us saying that he wanted to do things differently.  He wanted to run the whole meeting by asking questions and having the kids and parents answer them.  So, while I still had the lettering guidelines to cover, I really had nothing prepared AND he gave me another topic on the spot that I had no information about, so I bumbled my way through it and felt like a dope...so what's new.

Anyway...we got home from the picnic around 8:45 and I was out the door for my run at 9:00.  It was still pretty humid.  I ran 8 miles and saw a whole bunch of rabbits and fireflies...or lightning bugs, as we used to call them...the fireflies, not the rabbits...we always called rabbits rabbits.

          Okay--gotta go.  See ya!

          Henrun

4 humid miles early this morning after a poor night’s sleep. Nothing hurt and a nap after breakfast made it a good start for what promises to be a beautiful hot and less humid weekend. Off tomorrow for a week in the NH White mountains. Hope to do some hiking as well as a bit of running. Our DS’s and grandkids expected to visit. Won’t have much WiFi, so posting will be limited.

Yes Jay, I know that loop well. Ran it almost daily for over 20 years of my professional career.

            ((New Orleans and Louisiana)).

dropping in to say hi, and reading about the fundraisers, I had an idea (don't I always?)

I'd better share before I forget:

We've all heard of the Beer Mile, how about a Beer 5k?

Beer Mile has 1 beer before each lap, 5k would have 1 beer before each mile and one at the end. Or maybe just one before each mile, since 3 is enough!

              (beer)

              Start

1 mile split aid station (beer)

2 mile split aid station (beer)

              finish (beer or finish)

It would be a good way to get local breweries involved. Maybe each Beer Station has a different variety. Otherwise follow the rules of a Beer Mile regarding ounces, dumping can/bottle/glass over head to show it's empty, etc. Most Beer Miles prefer American Lagers (Bud, Miller, Coors, etc) due to their low alcohol content and similarity to water (almost all taste like water infused with the smell/flavor of rotting hay and a hint of chicken coop floor). Maybe real beers would be too much to handle?

I think a Beer 10k would be out of the question!

Well this description would make a person want to drink one, NOT

Up and out at almost J o'clock to meet a friend in Hot Springs for a beat the heat walk.  3.4 miles in an hour or so...lots of good conversation.

My area should be on the outer edge of Barry should he travel up as predicted.  20 mph winds and 3-4 in of rain is a normal storm for us.  Now if Barry decides to move to the west just slightly...YIKES

                Trails Rock!

Surly-sorry but your idea has already been taken.. 20 plus years ago I ran a 5K race in central California (several times) known as the “Can to Can”

Surly, I agree with your taste in beer (and that beer should have taste!) but think that calling a race a "Beer 5K" would mean a beer every kilometer (just a sampler-size), and you'd have to run in a straight line at the finish.

Anne, it's just the weather that's making you feel that way about running. It'll pass.

Really feeling bad about Erika and those Draconian cuts to the university budget (which the legislature was unable to override I think). Having been in the auto industry, I know what it's like to go through these things and that you can almost get "survivor's guilt" when you see old coworkers being escorted out of the building. And I disliked it even more when I had to give input on who would be let go.

I walked 5.2 miles on the usual trail this morning with a couple of friends. We also met our old RA friend Perchcreek (Steve) along the way. He's still running every day and definitely enjoying his retirement.

Jay-  a Shandy or Radler is basically beer mixed with a lemonade or a carbonated lemon-lime drink.  It is light and really good in the summer.  They have grapefruit shandy, blueberry shandy etc.

In Dallas (and coincidentally a picture of this just came up in my facebook memories) we DID have a beer 10K.  I did not participate as a runner, but I "helped".  It was something to behold.  This was back in the day when 10K was a short race for many of us.  5Ks were really not a "thing" yet.  There was a LOT of puking (which had some sort of penalty- I forget what it was).    It was about 100 degrees, too.

10.2 miles this morning by myself on the nice path.  I did NOT think I had it in me to do this.  It is way warm and humid and I didn't get started until about 7 am.  Starting at 2 miles I took about a 50 second walking break every mile, and that really does work.  I had a gel at 5.6 and I really did pretty well with the whole thing.  It was not particularly sunny, which also helped.  The route the group was doing this morning was not one I like very much, and I didn't feel like getting there by 6 am, so I was on my own.

Out there running since dinosaurs roamed the earth

Oh-  I really enjoy going to Sonic after my longer runs and getting an iced tea.  They have morning "happy hour" prices and it's $1.09.  Well- apparently they have started charging for lemon slices!  WWHHHHAAAATTTTT??  This is crazy- here in the south we love our iced tea and for me it HAS to have lemon!  That's  like charging for sweetener or sugar!   I objected to this and said to forget the lemon. They gave it to me anyway but said in the future I had to pay.      First world problems, I guess.

no run or walk for me - instead kayaked with GD2 and DS on the Charles.  Her first kayaking so she did well.  We decided in August on a duathlon - bike a few miles and take out a double kayak.  She prefers paddle boards, but I'm not going to balance on one.

what are the hash house harriers rules on beer - is it only afterwards or during the run also?

Nice run, KSA. I'm not sure I have a 10-miler left in me, although I used to run a popular 10-mile race here in MI every year for quite a while. On Anne's shandy, Saugatuck Brewery is a small western Michigan outfit and probably doesn't have national distribution. And isn't iced tea in the south sweetened to the limit of drinkability (especially for those of us who prefer it unsweetened)? It's also sweetened in Canada -- or at least Ontario -- and we've sometimes been unable to get it unsweetened. Sheesh, at least let me add my own sugar, if that's what I want.

I am about 100 miles NW from the center of Hurricane Barry. This is the drier and calmer side. The usual Saturday morning group run went ahead in blustery conditions and light rain started about an hour after our start. Probably the best running conditions I’ve had for several weeks. 15.5 miles at 10:58 average pace.

RunnerKSA, I suspect your extra 9 cents on the drink cost would be sales tax, not the lemon slices.

I could not find the thread for race reports for July 4th and the following weekend.

                              Started running at age 60.

                              AG 60-64 PR - 5K 25:45, 10K 53:28, HM 1:57:39, Marathon 4:32:09

what are the hash house harriers rules on beer - is it only afterwards or during the run also?

and before too, at least for the one in Tokyo

Fortunately, since I don't drink, there was no rule requiring swallowing so I just spit it out during the annual 10K x-c ski one we used to have a little south of erika-land.  Used it again during a big banquet in Shanghai once where they ganbei'ed after every one of the 12 course for 10 guests sitting around a big, round table where I strategically sat near a huge plant that got the beverage all 12 times I ganbei'ed a down-the-hatch with everyone else.  Hope the plant survived.  I wouldn't have.

                                .

After a very domestic yesterday for me, Mariposai must’ve left me some of her birthday weekend mojo as, for the second time in a week,    . and second time in my life, today’s outing was just joyous,   . . and I didn’t even go running, . . . yet.

26.2 miles on the bike, longest since I quit IM's in 2005.

Cycled across the bridge in the early morning darkness to join up a little bit with some of the 8,000 STP’ers as the reached mile 10 of the 210 miles to Portland.

Hooked in and drafted with one of the one-day pelatons who stared out from the UW at 4:45am for a strong six miles down the lake @ 19-20mph that I can never do on by myself anymore and even I powered up the first big hill they'll encounter in the next 200 miles and, then, went back along the lake to do it again gradually moving up through the peleton packs of regular riders at a still speedy (for me) 15-16mph, until the first hill (that many were walking up to save energy, I guess).  Helped a first timer bend the nub of the front brake central cable away from rubbing on her front wheel.

Missed Enke and any sign of Mr Blue Eyes, though.

Lots of surf boards at the Seward Park end of the quiet, waveless lake I found out were going to be in a contest to see who could stay longest on a special surf wake generated by a special surf-boat when it’s calm and then, back at the bridge, it was looking like a kayak race getting ready down below me but, as the kayaks casually spread out on the waters from the beach, the remainder on the beach were starting to wade in for a 5K open water swim.

Sure a lot going on the summer.
Now to get let my stomach join in on the fun over at the annual Ballard SeaFest and check out the anadromous salmon spawning migration from the salt waters of Puget Sound into fresh water Lake Washington.  Quite a physiological feat.
