Masters Running

Thankful Tuesday (Read 39 times)

Steve - So sorry to hear about your cousin.  {{{Group Hug}}} for those having a rough time, no matter what the issue may be.

No recap, but thank you, everyone, for your supportive words regarding Kate.  It's much appreciated.

After 2 days of nothing, I got in a 30 min stat bike ride this a.m.  Shoulda been longer, but I didn't have the time.

Tonight I'm having dinner with some lady friends, all of whom (except one) I haven't seen since the CV shutdown.  I'm really looking forward to it.

Hug someone close to you.  Enjoy ~~

      Mornin' Masters.

Thanks for the start, Leslie. Good, quick bike ride. I hope you have a great time with the ladies tonight.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of your cousin, Steve. It is especially tough to get such news, as you did yesterday, when you really didn't have an opportunity process it. I hope you've since been able to make time for that.

Nice to hear from a very, very busy Falcon!

I got out this morning for a little over my regular (these days) walk to go 1.8 instead of 1.4. That is about my limit for now. Even though I broke my pinky toe, my middle toe on that foot, which feels fine, is turning all black and blue. I guess I'd better figure that out.

      Have a greta Tuesday.

Then. 2 minutes forward lunges.  2 minutes backwards lunges. 2 minutes squats.

        0638

        1.35 walking miles home

Then the rest of my weights and planks and stuff.

I broke Rule #1. Because I felt a strong need to run. And it was a gentle rain.  Before I hit one mile, I think it stopped raining. I stayed on the all purpose Capital Trail rather than hit the soft surface trail in the swamp. I imagined snakes might be slithering around on the trails escaping the swampier swamp from all the rain.

So I ran to 4-H Club Road and turned around. The ominous sky held its burgeoning clouds in check until Garmin said I ran 5 miles. Then the clouds burst and let the rain fall.

So I did my exercises under a tree umbrella.  And then walked home.

Fast forward to 1300hrs. Lil sister won first round of Mahjong. Ralph won the next round. Next round was a ghoulie. Lil sis again. Then. I won the next two rounds. Poor mamarosa didn't win. But she said she enjoyed the afternoon.

Doug. I've enjoyed reading about your fun trip.

Did my Westin combo looping the property and treadmill for 6 total miles.

We are at Trunk Bay beach today, which always makes the list of world’s most beautiful beaches.  We got here early and got a shady spot and did some snorkeling.  4 hours later- still here!

KSA  - your trip reminded me how much I have missed the Caribbean beaches in the PBS/BBC "Death in Paradise" that, until February, came on Monday night at 8pm right after Jeopardy! that I used to like more than I do now when, voila!, all-of-a-sudden, it came back last evening. Isn't it fantastic to look out towards the horizon many miles out in the ocean to watch the sun set instead of houses across the street trees, streets, etc. in the way?

Steve - sorry for the reason. Having your head even more occupied that it usually is everyday is like me becoming fast. You are a saint.

After three dry days in the yard/garden, including second 70F day of the year on Sunday and all day long yesterday for the first time I haven't left the premises since I can remember, if ever, made up for it a little the morning up on the hillside where, in just four days since the last time, the ferns are waist high and the same buttercups the lie low beneath the mower blade in the yard are over knee high.

Sorry to hear about your cousin, Steve. This group needs hugs all around lately...

I made it back after a great trip, a few new discoveries, and even some time spent on a Mennonite family’s farm (nice people!). And here’s where I ate lunch one day in downtown Maysville:

Looking across the Ohio River as I was sipping my Buffalo Trace Bourbon at dinner one evening:

Driving from there to visit my brother in Zanesville and then home was quite an adventure. As Holly knows, Ohio has a dense network of state and U.S. routes that wind all over the place. In my motorcycling days we used to plan routes along the 3-digit state roads since those were the hilliest, twistiest, and most fun. On a motorcycle anyway, but not so much in my Outback. But that’s how Google Maps routed me and most of the time I had no idea of where I was in relation to anything else. I can vouch that OH-666 is a helluva road though! Favorite town name that I went through: Kinnikinnick.

The best thing about having to slow down and follow one of these for a while:

Is that you’re bound to see a sign like this somewhere along the way:

(Traveler’s tip: don’t go into one of these markets hungry. Don’t ask me how I know!)

I did a good bit of recorded and unrecorded walking during the trip and did one of 3.65 miles Saturday afternoon. My DW and I also went 8.67 meandering miles on our e-bikes Sunday evening. Today I rode with the usual Tuesday suspects on our first ride out the Paint Creek Trail to Lake Orion this year for a 26.7 mile round trip. I was even extra good at our stopover diner and had a bowl of oatmeal instead of the omelet that first caught my attention on the menu.

Condolences to Steve and Leslie and all who mourn.  Take time to mourn, for sure.

1050 yard swim this morning - just had enough time to get in 30 minutes of swimming before my 9:30 COVID Booster #2 appointment at a local grocery store that includes a pharmacy.  Best part of the morning was finding something called Zim's Max Freeze ("Extra Strength" "Pro Formula") a 7% Menthol topical analgesic that is basically the ActivOn that is no longer made.  I've no experience with BioFreeze even though I recognize the name (Isn't it Boifreeze?) which I think is very similar but I had no idea these things were so comparable.  Main thing is that it works and doesn't smell.   It's currently on the shoulder that hurts from swimming (thanks for the input Karen, I agree) and the shoulder that hurts from this morning's booster.

Tomorrow evening is the Masters Swim Class but I'll probably get over to the pool in time for a few laps before work.  Hard to say b/c DW will be at her Mom's 130 miles away and GN needs to get on the bus at 7:15.   I'll need to report to work late in order to stick around long enough to stick him on the bus, but he really doesn't need me to do that for him.  I just don't trust his memory for locking up when he leaves, if I don't stick around.  What do people with 15 year olds do?   DD would have been fine but I don't know about DS1, 2, or 3 at that same age.

A few more minutes and then I'll be heading up to the Saratoga Springs area (actually Stillwater NY, the site of the Battle of Saratoga, "Turning Point of the Revolution") to watch GN run a 400.  It's his only event.   I'm hoping I get there in time.  The meet started at 3:00 PM.   It'll go well into the evening and they'll probably be finishing under the lights.  That might be fun for him anyway.  Most likely the last track meet of his HS career, unless he picks it up in his new school next year (I hope he does and will encourage him too, for sure)

                  . . .and even some time spent on a Mennonite family’s farm . . .

                  Kinnikinnick.

Doug - especially since I don't have to travel anymore, sure is fun reading about everyone else's reminding me of many of my own similars, even when there's not a beach involved such as the biggest and best ever turkey dinner Thanksgiving we once had with a multigenerational Menonite family.

My favorite for the sound of saying it up in erika-land used to be Chalkytsik where my dad walked almost 200 miles across the ice and snow for a mining job during his UA days during the Depression but then, one summer, we got to listen to the daily banter between the Village of Iguigig and their fish camp at Iguiiguigig and, yup, after months of listening, I can pronounce both. See also their monthly newsletter Igyaramuit Qallemciit. Can't pronounce that, though. Smile

                    G'day!

13K today...moderate pace...golf course...238 metres (780 feet) elevation gain/loss...14C (58F)...with some steep downhill practice and speed hiking uphill bits for good measure.

Drank the same amount as my last 23K run when I lost over a pound. This time my stomach got a bit 'sloshy' a couple times, but I didn't lose any weight this time and I didn't have to pee. Dialling things in.

Back on a rowing machine foir the first time in years.

Now I'm sitting at home trying to process another school shooting...

Love the pictures, Doug.    BTY- good luck to your GN and let us know how he does!  I hope you make it in time.

This is "tech week", and I'm able to go for runs! We hired a company Production Manager a while back, and she's been rolling up her sleeves and helping, so there's less I feel responsible for (even if it's not my area, if it's not getting done, I jump in). We have a preview on Friday, then a 5-show run over the 3-day weekend. I'll likely have to be there for the whole weekend. but our campus is in Aquatic Park in Berkeley, where we're having the show on our own outdoor stage, so I can get in a run around the park (3 miles?) or cross over on University Footbridge to Berkeley Marina and do a loop there and back for 6+ miles. Oh wait, crowds. Nope.

Wednesday morning summary of GN's final track meet of the year, the Section II Div 4 meet.   He was in the first heat of the 400, and won it handily.  I think he said he ran a 67.1.    The other boys were somewhere in the 70's.   That was definitely a boost for him but I asked him after the race if he was happy with his race he said he wasn't and "x" beat him by 10 seconds.  "X" was his teammate that finished in the top 4 or 5 in the 3rd heat (and overall), which was great but as one of the grumpy old men at the meet, I was surprised how "slowly" the top finishers in the boys' races ran.  I was sitting with my former teammate from 40 years past who was a 400 and 800 specialist in HS but only ran one year of college track and field, and he and I both listened with raised eyebrows as they announced winning 400 and 800 times of 54.5 and something like 2:06.3...and those races weren't very close.  Running conditions were exceptionally good.  My former teammate ran sub 50 in the 400 and around 1:56 in the 800 and had other runners on his tail in all of those races.   Could it be an effect of 2 springs of COVID?

The best thing about the meet for me was that even though I gave him the option of going home with me at about 8:00 PM, he chose to ride home on the bus with his friends.  That's huge.

It's weird how times come and go in waves. I ran a 1:57 800m my jr year and got 6th in State (concentrated on 1500m my sr year), and that time would have won for the next 10+ years. Same situation for 1500m and 3k; times slower than my PRs winning State for years. 400m a few times, too.
