Marathon Maniac #3309

Good Sunday Morning Everyone - Boy, my allergies are really bugging me bad this Spring.....is anyone else noticing it's worse this year? -----Big congrats to Erika and Tampster for "speedy" PR'S yesterday.....WTG Young Ladies (yeah Erika, it's cracks me up at races when people begin with allll the excuses as to why they won't run well, but then run fast....brother) - I ended up running a Marathon distance yesterday - 26.5 easy paced miles - 4:08:58 - 9:24 ave pace. It really wasn't too bad untill the last couple of miles as the temperatures reached around 70 degrees and I was dressed to warm. Something I experimented around with for salt replacement was of all things.....chicken bouillon cubes. I LOVE the taste of these, and biting off little bits of the cube also takes away the nasty sweet taste of gels......yuck. After this run I felt pretty good, and my quads are the only thing that's really sore right now, but really wondered how in the heck I could have ran another 6 or 7 miles to finish a 50K, but I am going to work my way up to 28 to 30 miles before the race. And also yesterday, the first 13 miles were road running, then the last 13 was road plus fairly rough dirt and horse trails to try and get used to different terrain ---------Well, I am headed out for a very easy 8 to 10 miler depending on how I feel. But 10 miles should be doable and will help with my stamina -----Last night I drank beer for the first time in a couple of months, and I ate a WHOLE LARGE PIZZA MYSELF....then slept the next 12 hours which I never do, LOL ---------Hope everyone has a Wonderfully Blessed and Good Day - TimBo

Running has given me the courage to start, the determination to keep trying, and the childlike spirit to have fun along the way - Run often and run long, but never outrun your Joy of running!

    SteveP

      Good run yesterday Tim.

I used the truck as an aid station and kept the running partner locked in for the first loop. The look on his face when I left him....well...you can imagine...

I loved how bright the stars were. Though I had a small flashlight, a procupine startled me pretty well.

When I got back to the truck, I let Tag out and refilled my supplies. He was ready to go!!! About a mile into it, an owl went "Who,who....who, who who". Tag's ears went back and he ran over to  me.

      "What's that Dad?", he asked.

      "It's a monster, buddy"

      "What do monsters do?'.

I told him they eat doggies. He stayed pretty close for the first half of the run...To protect me I'm sure. He got pretty brave when he saw a couple of turkeys. And he chased other small birds. He found a dead racoon that he wanted to show Brinkley.

      16 miles altogether.

      SteveP

        Nice racing, Tammy!

I hope to catch up later but am not holding my breath.

I'm waiting to run again until Monday, did an hour of core stuff yesterday.

        Slo

Poor Tag.....someday he'll wise up to you Steve !

Just back from my long run......Exactly 3 hrs....exactly 21 miles.....Thats exactly 7 mph....Maybe I should hit the casino today.......Naw, The place is filled with cigarette smoke. I'll just hold on to my money.

The Legs feel great. I think this could be a good season.

Jlynne.....The Half Marathon is full. I gave up my slot and am now officially registered for the full marathon.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

          Tramps

Slept in today and will do a short run later.  I’m enjoying the luxury of reading yesterday’s thread closely….

CNY’s description of her running group was a classic.

Perch—glad to hear the foam roller’s providing some relief.  Hang in there.

Tom—sweet and sproinky 8-mile progression run!  And right on the heels of that nice 10-miler!

Jlynne—I never thought of the hazards of being “a gazelle-like, graceful runner” (not something I need to worry about!).  Hope it’s feeling better today.

Enke—do kids even know what board games are anymore?

Twocat—nice job for your DW. Your muffin reports always make me hungry.

Stumpy—“aerobics with dumbbells” sounds kind of annoying.

Lou—good for you for volunteering. (And how'd it go for PDR?)

Erika—your description of sandbagging friends was funny.  (What's the origin of the expression “sandbagging” anyway? e.t.a. Found it.)  Nice race, too; very creative.  (How long is Beethoven’s 5th?)

Roch—I sorta get what you were saying.  But with the exceptions of great blues and impressive architecture, I experienced Chicago as a little bland.  Maybe I just didn’t get to see the good parts.

Tammy—Woo hoo!  What a great PR…and then to follow it up with 7 more miles!  Impressive.

Byll—I hope things are feeling better today.

Wow, Tim, that’s some run; I’d eat a whole pizza too.

            Steve—Tag is remarkably articulate.

Yesterday’s post of the day is from Wildchild:

"NYC is full of New Yorkers, and Houston is full of Texans."

We can always count on Carolyn for deep insights.

(Hey, that’s for ridiculing the Boston hills, yesterday! )

Actually, the Boston hills discussion was interesting yesterday.  My understanding is that, objectively speaking, the hills are quite modest but: (1) they come rather late in the race and (2) people are often irrationally exuberant on the first 2/3 of the course and are left with little in the tank when the hills arrive, thus the importance of strategy.

I’m hoping to get in early enough on Friday to go run the hill section, nice and slow, of course, just to refresh my mental picture.  I've mentioned before that when I was finishing up grad school at BC but living in southern NH, I used to drive most of those hills a couple times a week coming in from I-95/128.  I also lived a year on Chestnut Hill Ave, just around the corner from the Comm Ave turn-off to Cleveland Circle.  It’ll be fun revisiting the old neighborhood.

After official results were posted, I found out  I got a “trickle down” AG award in yesterday’s 15K.  The top two runners in my AG were in the top 3 Masters overall, so with a 4th place AG finish, I got bumped up to 2nd in my AG.  Sweet!  I’m 3-for-3 in AG awards for local races this year, which has nothing to do with my getting faster and everything to do with a lack of depth in my AG this year for some reason.  Regardless, I’ve now got three small gift certificates to our local running store.

            Be safe. Be kind.

            i'm lovin' it... MM#1949

Tramps, I hope everybody with pre Boston injuries conquers them like you did!  WTG on the 2nd AG  and 3-3!

Tim, I've never run past 26.2 but I think for ultras you just need back to back long runs vs one very long run. You sound really fit right now!

Steve - nice 16 and  please don't scare Tag Smile

Slo... nice round number long run! (and fast!!)

13.2 miles in 2:04:13 (9:30, AHR 146). Threw in an 85 ft hill at the end just because....

Some soreness firt 3 miles that faded to nearly zilch.  More Ice and foam rolling this week, but all systems go!

Perch's Profile "I don't know if running adds years to your life, but it definitely adds life to your years." - Jim Fixx "The secret is to make in your mind possible what was not possible before. The secret is to make easy what was difficult, instead to make difficult what really is easy." - Coach Renato Canova

Quote from enkephalin on 4/10/2010 at 6:10 PM:

I worked with a young Texan woman who talked about her beloved state a lot.  Her parents lived in a small town and owned about half the businesses in it.

                Walt said:

So..the Dairy Queen, the car wash and the rug-cleaner? And the BIL was the town judge?

Boy am I glad i emigrated when I did ('85).

Actually, it was the funeral parlour, the furniture store, a law practice and her father was director of the bank.  In a town of 800, yup, a lot.  No apparent conflicts of interest there I suppose.

Tammy way to go another another PR....a PR streak, that sounds cool!

Tim - I like how you do everything 110%.  The large pizza and sleeping for 12 hours for example....

Tramps  -  you are being too modest.  Stop it!

Bill, I bet those are phantom taper pains.  You are going to do great.

Perch, thanks for your succinct description of the hills.  I'll save that I case I can ever be charity runner.

Well big party day, lets hope it goes well.  I will run after dinnertime loaded up on cake.  But at least it will be 60F outside by then which is just perfect.

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."

I love that you're working out DG.

                  Nice AG bump Tamps!!!!

Good luck on the cake run Enke

                  Carolyn

Thanks, Tramps. I guess I deserved that.   As for the Boston [la-la-la]s, I'm sure coming late in the course, they're challenging.  I just always thought that with a name like "heartbreak hill" it was bigger.  And for the record, my driveway only gains 80 ft, and is 0.15 miles long (10% grade), and I can't run the whole thing except if I go very very slowly.

Tammy, congrats on the PR yesterday! And congrats to Laura too.

TimBo, nice long run and pizza binge!  You certainly earned it.

Slo, really nice 21 miler for you - you're gonna do great at the marathon!

SteveP, nice 16 miler. How much of it did Tag run with you? That seems like a long way for most dogs, and I know you said you left him in the truck for part of it.

Tramps, congrats on the AG award yesterday.  Don't sell yourself short on the AG placements - you're pretty speedy, as evidenced by the 3 for 3.

Enke, how old is your DS today? Hope he has a great party.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

                      THE BAGS ARE READY!!!

when i left my shift at 1 we had 20,000+ bags ready for the Boston runners - afternoon shift had less than 6000 to get completed!!  shirts are blue with yellow wording.......nice key chain went in too!!  volunteer jackets are a funky neon yellow/green color - very cool!

time to nap before work tonight!

                      denise

                      Tramps

Thanks, Tramps. I guess I deserved that.

                        Heh, heh.

But I totally understand what you're saying, though. My fantasy is to be like Erika and, after reaching the top, say to myself, "That was it?!" Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I'm not as tough as Erika.

                        Deez--Cool!  Thanks for your work.

ETA:  I'm calling it a 5-mile untimed (10:30?) jog/nature walk on a nearby trail.  Boy howdy, it was warm out there, even on the shady trail.

                        Be safe. Be kind.

                        Marathon Maniac #957

                          Busy day today, so here’s a drive-by post…

Breger - I'm hoping that was just a little post-run cramping and that it will be already gone....

Tim - nice run for you yesterday!

Tramps, Erika, and Tammy – congratulations on your PRs!

Enke – happy birthday to your DS!

                          Steve –

Much better run for me today in 48°:

                          4 miles easy (ave 10:15)

                          6 miles sub-MP (ave 8:43)

                          3 miles easy (ave 10:16)

(not including stops for water fountain and portopotty)

                          13 miles total.

Now we’re off to DS’s soccer game.

                          Happy Sunday!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

evan, nice 5K with PR and concert tickets.  Tammy way to go on your PR for 5th consecutive years in your race.  breger, I hope the ITB spazzing is no big deal.  Tramps, neat you got bumped to an AG award.  enke, happy birthday to your son.

Nice long runs for jlynne, MrsTwocat, Sarge (hilly and with your wife), Tammy (including race), bike (in spite of allergies acting up), steve, Slo, perch, and holly.

This morning, it was about 40° and almost calm.  I got in 5 miles in a little over 48 min for a 9:38 pace.

A good day and good runs for all.

                            TomS

                            evanflein

Tim, careful on pushing the distance too much in training runs. Your chance for injury goes up pretty steeply at those distances. That's why most marathon training plans only go to 20 miles. It's true that your better training gains will be from running back-to-back long runs, say a 17 and a 23 miler, and include some of the expected terrains.

Look at me, I've run one ultra and dishing out advice.

Official time for my race yesterday was 22:24, so a 6 second PR. I'll take it.

Carolyn, your driveway is like a stretch of road by our house. Half mile from home the road into our subdivision is pretty steep, then a bit of level, then another steep uphill stretch. Then it's down/flat the last 1/4 mile. I always feel pretty triumphant if I can do that 1/4 mile steep section without stopping/walking, but at the end of a long run, that's hard to do!

Tramps, the version of Beethoven's 5th they used yesterday is 30:47 I think. So, pretty good chance I was going to get a ticket, but fun to work for it. A couple friends of mine gave me their tickets, so now I have 3!

Nice run, SLO! Way to nail things with precision.

I think SteveP and Tag have the most fun on their runs. Nice mileage for you, Batman.

Glad Holly had a nice long run today. Good to end the longer runs on a strong note like that.

I'm feeling lazy, we were out dancing last night till well after 1 a.m. Got home and DS1 was still not home from the Prom. Hmmm. He rolled in around 2:30 a.m., so we're all sort of in slow motion around here. But, lots to do including a 8-10 mile run for me, so time to get busy, I guess.

                              stumpy77

                              Trails are hard!

Out for 6.45 miles in IRC this morning.  Longest run since January of last year.  took 1:06, but that included a stop to drop the long sleeves and pick up the MP3 player to distract me for the 2nd loop around the lake.  Saw a couple of guys at least three times, so I guess I wasn't the only one multi-lapping.

Apparently the new version of Pump class used some different muscles than the old one.  DOMS in the butt cheeks today.  Hope it goes away before yoga tomorrow.

Henry--I saw your friend John DeC (I'm not going to attempt the whole last name) twice and asked him if he was going to run next week.  He said he was going to try.  For background, he's the former track/x-country coach in town who's in his mid 80's and does the marathon in under 6 hours.

Nice long runs and tapers for everyone.  Byll--sure hope it's taper pains only.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

                                12
