Started antibiotics for my suspected Lyme  on Monday and by Wednesday felt significantly better, did a short treadmill run and it went great. I was registered for Vermont 100 miles this weekend. I have done the 100k version three times, so I thought maybe I'll try the  full distance this year. Well, that thinking was back in January of course. In any case, since we had everything planned and it's a nice vacation for the family anyway, regardless of my running, we still drove to Vermont on Thursday. I felt better and better every day, even the 6hr drive felt easy. So, ok, on Friday I idiotically pick up the bib, still not sure should I ran or not. The smart thing was to not run. I know that now. The weather forecast was perfect, cool and cloudy, so it should make running even easier. OK, in the end I somehow decided to give it a try. I was worried about the fever, the chills coming back. Or maybe fatigue, or maybe upset stomach from antibiotics. None of that turned out to be a problem. What derailed me was something completely new. In the first 20 miles I started feeling shin pain in the left leg. Exactly like shin splints, which I had last time in 1990's when I first started running. It was very strange. After a while the pain got worse, and then it also started in the right leg. In the end I had both legs red and swollen in the shin area and had to drop out, each step was a pain. I'm reading on shin splints and Lyme now and it looks like it is a fairly common side effect. Grossly aggravated in my case, of course, due to the extra miles and hills.
