    Mornin' Masters.

I'm just popping in to get us started today. I have an 8:30 meeting at which I'm doing a presentation about the Coastal Hazards Adaptation Team that we formed at the beginning of 2019 and is still meeting monthly, going strong, and doing good work. I have another meeting at 10, and the last one for today at 1, and then we are going out to dinner with some neighbors to a local restaurant that is closing forever in another week or so.

I went 2.6 miles yesterday, and 4.23 EZ ones this morning in 39° temps and some wicked winds.

Have a greta Thursday (Little Friday)

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

      Howdy folks.

Good luck with your meetings, Jay.

Falcon - bummer about the apartment mixup.

You all may remember that DH and I went to Fort Myers Beach last October for 4 days.  We decided to go back to the same place this coming October.  The main resort is on the beach, but we stayed at their small sister building that is across the street.  There are 6 suites on the back end (it's a 3-storey building), with balconies that overlook the lovely inland waterway and million-dollar homes.  The building is a bit dated (no elevators), but the suites are roomy, the bed comfortable, the WiFi worked great, and they have full kitchens.  Plus, it is very quiet on that end.  We were able to get 4 nights in a suite for a total of $622 ($155/night) - this includes all the taxes and resort fees, etc.

Add to that - when we flew American they were (again) offering their credit card applications, but this time they came with 60,000 frequent flyer miles.  So we both signed up for a card (what the heck - we will cancel one of them when we use the miles).  At this point my card miles were up to about 82,000, so we were able to use FF miles to book our round trip flights.  It took 63,000 miles and I paid $26 total.  Plus we get two free checked bags.  So, we get a 5-day/4-night vacation at Fort Myers Beach for $648.     We will just Uber from the airport, stopping at a grocery on the way there to stock up on essentials, and mostly just chill on the beach and walk around.  I love having something like that to look forward to.

Just about 30 minutes of light weights exercises for me today.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Thanks for the start, Jay.  Enjoy the restaurant.

Holly- cool that you get to go back to the same place.  It's a nice time of year there.

I'm delaying getting out the door.  I think I'll drive over to the park.  I can't face the neighborhood this morning with the hills.

Out there running since dinosaurs roamed the earth

Our road trip nostalgia was cured by our 500 mile drive to our hotel in Iowa City yesterday. Orange barrels much of the way, starting with Michigan's carpy freeways such as I-94 westbound. As usual, as soon as we crossed the state line into Indiana the road smoothed right out, but then we merged onto I-80 and its usual horror show of truck traffic into Chicago. It was well over an hour of solid multi lane truck traffic that didn't clear much until well west of the city. It really didn't slow us down much, but was very tiring.

At least we had booked a nice hotel for the night and are familiar with this area from previous trips. A 2 mile walk along the Iowa River capped the evening for us. We're much less hurried today and will start by driving to the Amana Colonies and stopping for a fresh pastry and coffee at one of the cafes. In fact, we'll be staying off of the freeway all the way across the state.

          Have a good Thursday, all!

Enjoy the trip, Doug.  Yesterday sounds awful.

5.5 miles on a beautiful day- clear, sunny, in the 50s.  Went over to the park (hillier part) and really wanted to stay there and just hang out when I finished.  Too nice to be inside.

Well that explains the horn honking I heard yesterday - Doug was passing through the heartland!  You and I have a different take on Indiana but I certainly agree on Chicago.  If I could find a way to avoid 80/94 all together I'd be a much more frequent visitor to MI.

Enjoy the Amana Colonies and the rest of your trip.

My new Asics have been sitting in Texas for a few days but rumor has it they will reach my doorstep this afternoon.  Now I wait for the rain to push out and the UPS truck to show up.

Wow! Nice waking up to the daily Daily already underway better than having to get up and go out to pick up the local news rag off the driveway and read about all the local shootings, etc., . . . though, with the Russo-Ukraine war now taking up most of the front page, Jay's being on the Coastal Hazards Team kind of scared me.

Jeopardy! factoid for Doug: Iowa's oldest tree is a white oak (that is in Madison County and over 400yo plus white oaks are the state tree).

Otherwise, one of the shorter Hillside Park loops for a dry run this morning under high overcast getting ready for rain again tonight contemplating the ridiculousness of thinking that, like the old days, I could follow-up Monday's six hour with a 12 hour today or later in the week, or later in the year or ever anymore. Very glad I did it and other antics when I could.

                ps Holly - excellent vacation.

                    Good Morning!

Off to my chiro/PT appt soon (I'm thinking I might be done. I'm feeling pretty much 100%). work, then meet up with the running group and beer time tonight. Supposed to rain later, so I guess we'll see how much I feel like running if it does start raining. A few from the group are running Eugene this weekend. Their first "official" marathon, even though they ran a self-supported marathon during covid when no races were really taking place. I'm excited for them! Always fun and exciting to go into that first marathon experience.

speaking of marathons, I've penciled in Humboldt Redwoods marathon in October. Prices go up in June, so if I decide to run it I'll get registered at the lower rate. $80 is pretty good for a marathon these days!  I said I'd never really want to run a road marathon again, but darn it, I just loving running in the Redwoods so much and it's been maybe 6 yrs since my last road marathon, so I'm curious what kind of time I can run that in.

Okay, off to finish up my caffeinating and then go to PT.

                    Tammy

Glad you have a nice trip to look forward to, Holly.  And way to work the deals!

We can't fly out of here without paying through the nose - much like Erika, I suppose.

Have fun with all those meetings, Jay!  Too bad about the restaurant closing - unless it's something the owners had planned to do.

45 min this morning on the stationary bike, riding to nowhere, followed by about 20 min of core/ST/PT.

Still trying to get in touch with the MRI place in Redding.  I have a sinking feeling I'm going to be making 2 trips over next week.  That'll suck for certain.

Okay - That's it.  Off to the races.  Enjoy ~~

The rs and I met our running friends downtown. It was a hilly course and my hip said it could be a mistake but WTH.

The faster group led the way down England St past the Golden Horseshoe golf course by the pro shop and into the woods. The terrain was pot holes and gravel and rocks and wash out. Until we got to the trail that was roots and rocks. Until we got to the trail that was grass.

We were looking for the rhododendron bushes that formed a tunnel of floral delights years ago. Alas, only a few fuchsia beauties have survived.

                          We appreciated their solitary beauty.

Mile 4 brought us into town and someone said "Let's find the lambs!" And someone else said, "Let's find the foal!"  And so we did. Add the sight seeing to the terrain and you will know why my average pace per mile is even slower than usual.

Lambs and a foal are worth it

Doug. Your road trip sounds great!  Enjoy every minute.

And the Dismal Swamp is over an hour south east of me. We did run the inaugural Dismal Swamp Stomp half marathon in April 2007.

It was disappointing. And out and back on one road and not much to look at.

Off to Mahjong in a little while. And then I get to be like Jeanne and watch GS1's tee ball game. Finally, I get to be like Jeanne!

Well that explains the horn honking I heard yesterday - Doug was passing through the heartland!

Doug - that drive does sound stressful. If it were DH and I (him driving) doing that drive, I know it would be even MORE stressful to me, as DH gets very agitated in those kinds of driving conditions.  Not that he would let ME do it just to give him a break.  He drove me to a marathon a few years ago (I think the Freedom Run, maybe) that was about an 8-hour drive, and I told him afterward that I did NOT want him to come with me anymore, because his "Every one if you is my adversary!" take on driving was just too stressful for me.

Gosh Tramps, you are awfully chatty today!

RCG - I love seeing spring babies!  On the bike path down by the river where I usually run (when I can run) I always love watching the baby ducks and geese.  (Yes, TomWhite, the baby geese are cute, even if their parents can be a challenge.)  And baby raccoons, even though their parents are also a challenge.  A few years ago I had a very pleasant half-hour watching a mama racoon get her two babies over our backyard fence, scolding and chattering and carrying when necessary.

Both of my interviews went well today.  1) The elder law attorney is close (12 minute drive) and his long-time paralegal that I would be working with also seems very nice.  BUT, while he admitted that I am most excellently qualified for that job, I don't know if he is sure he needs someone quite so qualified, or if he wants to pay as much as I would want.  2) The law firm downtown is farther (20 minute drive) and larger (10 attorneys and 8 support staff), but I would be doing some DR, some Probate, and a lot of Estate Planning, which is frankly a lot less stressful than Crisis Medicaid, and I think they would pay more.  BUT, the elder law attorney said he will decide by the end of the week and the law firm downtown would still be doing a second round of interviews.  If the elder law attorney offers me the job, and then 2 weeks later I got offered the downtown job, I would hate to be so rude as to quit right after being hired.  OTOH, maybe NEITHER of them would offer me a job.  Guess I will cross that road when and if I come to it.

Tramps - unless you're back to regular running again, is that your shortest ride ever? Maybe check your saddle fit.

Murray - are the logging roads through clear-cuts or lots of unsightly debris from long ago clear-cuttings like the trails I otherwise like down here, or are they peaceful, quiet, access roads through the mossy coastal rainforests?

Doug / Holly - driving on our I-5 equivalent out here is so automatically stressful that I avoid it at all cost and times, even detouring the long way around on the way to a race at five in the morning.

ps Holly - be very happy DH keeps his annoyances in the car with you instead of road-raging with the idiot drivers irritating all of us.
