Jan. 12 Race inspired runs and whatever (Read 453 times)

After watching everyone run so hard and so well yesterday at the Disney Marathon, I couldn't wait to run today! First run since last Thusday. It was really interesting to be on the other side of the ropes and see a race from that perspective. Anyway, inspired by all of them, I went out and ran 13.1 miles at a cruising pace of 8:30. Miles 6 through 11 were all at 8:15 pace. Felt great. I had been feeling a bit of upper leg aches in the abductor area (inner leg?) this weekend, but nothing during the run. Bill

Nice inspired run Bill! I went for a nice easy 6 today matching the wind chill. Getting the week off to a good start. This has to be my earliest post on record. Trying to become an early morning runner, at least for the next couple of months. Cross training after school today. Good runs all! I am an avid San Diego Chargers fan and most of my students know this. A fifth grade student who is a huge Steelers fan wanted to bet me on yesterday's game, so today I have to wear a Steeler's jersey all day at school.

Good morning everyone - Happy Monday Wow Bill, yet another greta run for you...WTG and keep up the good work...you truly inspire me Buddie!!! Can't beat starting the week off with a 1/2 M... Nice run for you too Craneium in cold Burrrrr conditions. I imagine lots and lots of folk lost money and stuff this past weekend with how the NFL games turned out. Guess what everyone....I am back in the game....finally. I magically woke up Saturday morning and thought wow "my foot feels perfect" I went to the Y to lift weights and do my core work. After wards I decided to do some overall stretching, and especially on my injured foot. I did some heel lifts and heel drop downs and had full flexibility with no pain...heck in a careful way I tried to make my AT hurt...couldn't. So I went home and decided a very very short run might be a good idea. I got bundled up and ran to my 1/2 mile point with absolutely no pain, then turned around and walked back home to be on the safe side. I then did some more light stretching and called it a day. Then I thought to myself, I bet I wake up tomorrow morning (Sunday) with my foot hurting again.....nope, didn't happen and my foot felt great, and still does this morning SmileSmileSmile And I am sure this was not because of wearing my new boot for only one week, but rather it was just my time with the time spent not running and recovering from an injury....but will still wear my boot / boots. Ok here is my plan from here: I am still not going to run again for about 2 or 3 weeks, or so. And now I am going to work on some strength training and stretching my AT, that Matt (Twokitty) Emailed what he did to get back to running again. He said when I was pain free I could indeed run, but I really really want to be on the safe side (where in the heck did I get all this patience, and being so smart about this is beyond me)...but glad. Thanks to everyone for your super support, helping this stubborn guy get through a tough time. Magical indeed....and I am so excited. TimBo Boy, I really like this new format...I can better see what I am typing before I post it...cool. And Tet, - according to the Tapering Rule Book. A short "test" run under a mile does NOT count. So I am still the Taper King...for now TongueSmile The bad news is, I woke up Sat Morning with a cold...and still feel like crap, but I am taking Zicam regularly.

Running has given me the courage to start, the determination to keep trying, and the childlike spirit to have fun along the way - Run often and run long, but never outrun your Joy of running!

Good morning guys. Cranium - hope you look good in black and yellow! I was hoping that would have been a better game. It's interesting that 3 of the home teams lost. Next weekend will be some good football. Nice run this morning, Bill. I didn't notice what the temps were in Disney yesterday. Was it too warm? I may have missed your post, but was there a reason why you didn't run yesterday? Yeah - Tim! Great news! You have to take your victories in small increments, now, and don't be too eager to jump back into your normal routine. I'm so happy you were able to run a little. You must be thrilled. Intervals for me this morning. A mile warm-up followed by 30 minutes with the dreadmill set at 6.2 rest, 7.2 work, 2 minutes of each followed by a mile cool-down and some inclined lunges and ab work. It didn't feel as hard as last week - maybe there's hope for these old legs yet. Bitter cold predicted here for most of the week with highs of -10. You don't want to know what the low temps are supposed to be. They're saying this is supposed to be the coldest week of weather here in the last ten years.Shocked Looks like it's a week of running inside. I don't know if anyone is a "24" fan, but it was fantastic last night. Can't wait for the next episode this evening! Have a great day, everyone.
              Great news, Tim!

Jlynne, I wasn't planning to run Disney. This was a Erika visit for me. See her RR. Bill PS: the weather was heavenly!

Great to hear, Tim! Short recovery run for me this morning. It was a little chilly, but after hearing about areas north of here I guess 24°F is downright balmy Smile 3.2 miles, 29:57, 9:29/mi, AHR 130

biketm great to see how good the AT feels! I know it has been a long, long, long wait for this to happen but that is the great thing about running injuries. Unlike some other sports, if you let them heal they do and off you go as good as new! It will be great to read your run and then race reports in the upcoming months. Then I get to read, and laugh at, your future encouragement to others sitting out injuries with the story of the year you had to "couch potato" for a few months due to an AT injury after attempting a marathon with it on the fritz! Wink All if you have not read Tramps' run report from yesterday's thread I highly recommend doing so! Very cool read. Cool Do you find that on some pairs of shoes the laces keep coming loose? I have some pairs like that, and have had to double knot them to keep them from coming undone during the day. Then I read this article in Runner's World about something called an Ian Knot. I doubt I will use it instead of a double knot while running, but I have been using it on my walking around shoes. It takes a bit to get the knack but it is actually pretty easy to tie and it works great! If you have some shoes that come undone during the day I highly recommend giving this thing a shot. Just work on it for a day or two and you will get it. The original article had diagrams. The diagrams are useful but I think more useful after you watch this youtube video that shows you (way too quickly) how to tie the thing. I am going to attempt my first 20 miler of the current training cycle later today. It has to be today as this place is going to turn into an ice box later this week. Although the predictions have become somewhat less dire as the week has progressed. The overnight low Saturday was forecast to be 2° but is now "up to" 14°. Tongue I hope it keeps going up! My DW has indicated she may do the 15K race Sunday if it is not too cold. It would be her longest race ever if she does, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Before my run today, however, I am going to the first of my two doctor appointments for the week about my leg. But, the good news is that my leg is feeling better. For the first time in a long time this morning I put my foot up on the bathtub to put on some body lotion and I was pain free. I am attributing this to religiously using a 3" cushion with holes in it under my right bursa sack and left whatever it is that hurts. Since I started doing this the reduction in soreness has been spectacular! You can see it in my workout times. My pace from last week is better by nearly 30 seconds. All this continues to point to my problems arising from sitting injuries! Confused How the heck do distance runners get sitting injuries! UGH!

Teresa – congratulations to your supersonic DS! PDR – hope there are no after effects from yesterday’s fall. Tramps – I loved your report on yesterday’s run. Craneium – watch out, you might find yourself addicted to early morning running, once you get used to it. Timbo – Yay! (for the run, not the cold – hope you feel better soon) Twocat – hope today’s run goes well for you. X-training day for me, but I’m trying out the “do a short recovery run the day after LR” method, so I started with 2 easy-paced miles on the TM, followed by: 1.Alternating side lunges (20L, 20R), bench step-ups (20L, 20R). 2. Weighted squats (30), weighted ballet squats (30), split squats (20L, 20R). 3. Single leg bridges (30L, 30R), forward lunges (20L, 20R) and then dumbbell curls, lateral raises, dumbbell presses, flies, lying hammer curls, and stability ball crunches. Happy Monday!

Yeah Tim--but be sure to avoid any irrational exuberance. Nice running this morning. 5.2 miles @ 8:29 pace. Completely mundane and uneventful, with no military escort or anything.

                        Be safe. Be kind.

3 easy miles for me last night. Roads were snowy, but not too icy and the temp was good at 24 degrees. We have blizzard warnings tonight, so hopfully I'll get my run in tomorrow. I started the Hal Higdon's 10K novice training plan last week, and although the cross-training is a bit sketchy, the running is on track after an almost nonexistent Dec. It felt good. I finally went to the doc to have my ankle checked. I figured after several weeks off in Dec, if it still hurt at all, I'd have it checked out. My regular doc took xrays and said bone growth (spurs?) where it wasn't supposed to be and sent me to a foot doc. The foot doc said the xrays looked fine, but said I probably had tendonitis. He gave me an anti-inflamatory, shoe inserts, and referred me to a physical therapist with a follow up in 5 weeks. If it doesn't get better with PT, then he'll do an MRI. I'll make the PT appointment today. I'm a little confused why the foot doc didn't mention the bone issue, but am just going to go with it. It does feel loads better today. I'm not sure if it is the result of the time off or the meds; probably both, but all the same it's nice to not limp. Tim - Glad to hear your good news! Holly - as always, your cross-training makes me tired. What an inspiration.

Tim, Bet you never thought you'd get such satisfaction out of .5 mi... Twocat, Have a great 20 miler! Cleanup day here at the house -- slug day. Renee is not amused. Oh small data point -- my husband is having the exact same back spasms and left leg pain as I am. I think this is an occupational issue as I've been having him do more of the kiddo lifting etc. And, when he runs, the leg pain goes away too. Can't wait to see my massage therapist tomorrow and see if she can give me any hints as to what the root of this is.

4 predawn miles with a pager on my hip. Yesterday's nordic skiing and 6 miler prior to the that left the legs not wanting to move today. I dream for the day we will see Aamos here again. I sure miss her. Peter, that pizza looked so good!. Great crust.

Handymom Here's a wave to you from Eastern Iowa. I saw your mention of Blizzard warnings. I was beginning to wonder if there were any other IOWANS here. You should be seeing snow shortly.......I think they have us down for a Noon time start. No runs for me yet today. If the weatherman is right it'll be the treadmill tonight. I had a great 12 mile run yesterday. Opened up at an 8:34 pace but finished my run with an 8:05 average and I felt very refreshed after a nice cool shower. I don't have a Marathon planned for this spring but with the way I've been running lately I wonder if I shouldn't give my 6 yr old PR a shot. Tramps Great report from yesterday. Thanks for taking the time to share it.
