Question about races and course record awards. (Read 142 times)

Hi friends, What has been your experience: In the first year of a race, is prize money awarded for a course record? Or does the winner that year establish the benchmark against which the following year's winning times are measured? Then, if someone in the second year beats the first year's winning time, they earn the award for establishing a NEW course record. What would you do if you were the race director in the first year of a race? Thanks for your thoughts! Jay

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

Jay, I wouldn't give a "course record" award the first year. However, in lieu of a course record award, you could say, "The fastest time under XX:XX wins a special prize of Y." That way, the winner has to do more than just win to get the special prize. Just a thought. Dark Horse

If a race is going to offer prize money at all, then yes, the course record gets prize money the first year. Why? Because that person also won the race... and that's usually where the first cut of any prize money goes. Does the person get money for winning and more money for setting a record? Nah, not the first year.
