Senior Games (Read 41 times)

No more marathons

Anyone here ever compete in the senior games at either the state or national level?  The national level is run every two years, and you must either qualify at your state games, or by meeting a national time level.  There are multiple events (tennis, golf, racquetball, lots of others) as well as track and field.  Our local games are next week and they are the means of getting to the state games in August.  Local level looks very non-competitive (I'll guess I see if that is the case) and even the state level looks doable even for a so-so runner as myself.

Just wondered if anyone has competed in these at the national level and what is the competition like?

I've competed in our local regional senior games one time a few years ago, but not state or nationals. The small regionals meet didn't have much  of a turnout so the competition was not there. I plan to run in the Washington State 2014 Senior Games in July, and based on past results it's a mixed bag - some tough competition, but not that many runner's in the M55-59 age group that I'll be running in. I don't expect to win anything against serious competitors, but it will be fun to compete against others my own age, and if there are only 2 or 3 runners in a given event in my age group, then it's a sure thing I'll finish in the top three, assuming I don't pull a muscle and DNF.

I had never heard of this but I checked it out and found that Minnesota's is in August...hmmm...

I'm getting the idea that you could clean up there, Mike.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

I have done a couple state games. Very low key and not many participants. The national games are not that deep competition wise, compared to USATF, but I have heard they are fun.

I hold state sr games 50+ records for 1500 and 3000 m on the track and 5K 10K roads. New age group and might do the track this year.

I had  never heard of this, either.  The Colorado Senior Games is in June.  Based on previous years' results I would do well at state level but not at national.  But they want $50 for the 10k which seems kind of steep. I think personally, I'll stick to trail races.

Mike, the 2015 National Senior Games is in Minneapolis!  You should do state this year to qualify for nationals next year - you'd totally clean up!

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

I competed at the state level in triathlon about 10 years ago & won age group out of 2.  However, I am not only not competitive at the national level, but I don't think I even meet the standards to compete In 5 or 10k.  I got a Tshirt out of it & bragging rights.

Out local games are next week - I've entered the 1500, the 800 and the 5K track.  All that for $10 bucks and a t-shirt to boot.  I'm expecting I'll be the only one in my age group (60-64) so hoping some young 50's will show up to help pace me to some good times.  Our state games are in August and based on last year I will need to run well to place in the top 3.

                  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

                      +1

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Ha!  You cheer for me?  You ain't too shabby yourself.  Maybe we should both plan on doing it.

We have some pretty fast old guys running around up here.  I used to compete in the Star of the North Games and it all depended on who showed up as to how well I did.  But it does sound like fun.

I would LOVE to do it. Slight problem -- I will only be 49 at the end of this year, which makes me ineligible for the State games in Minnesota this year (and as a result, ineligible for the National games in Minnesota next year).

I'm truly bummed. But I'll come out and cheer ... and help celebrate as you clean up!

I'm just glad that Mike and subdood are both youngsters.

I'll get to compete against those pesky 60 year olds.  Smile

Ha!  Yeah, once you pass 60 you get fragile.  Don't even think of doing something like running a marathon (or four).

They do have basket weaving as part of the senior games {really}.

                                perhaps I'll stick with that.
