Congrats to the XC boys, Opus77! Good for you for knowing your limits. Happy B’day to your DW.

Holly, I think it’s settled that the cow references have to go. Listen to PBJ…

Good luck with the chiro, Fatozzig. I’ll be nice if it works.

I’m glad you’re coming to our Great Bay 5k, Marj. I’ll keep an eye out for you.

    You make me laugh, Mike.

Welcome, Surly Bill! I hope you join in with our motley crew.

I hope you make it to the weekend, Evanflein. I’m so not yet ready for the weather you’re getting.

The spring broke on our garage door at the beginning of the month. I've been working with the local Overhead Door co. office, but they have been incredibly unresponsive. Yesterday morning, a guy showed to finally replace the spring, but he said whoever had measured (another of their guys) did it wrong, and so he had the wrong size spring. He said someone would call me by the end of the day. No one did, so I called just before they closed. No one could tell me what would happen next or when whatever it is will happen. I hope we get our spring by Spring!

5.97 (I know...) uninspired miles this morning in 57° temps. No matter what I tried, I couldn't find any mojo. So I just stayed with it and got it done. Now I'm heading to BWB (Breakfast With the Boss [my DW]) at our favorite dive, and am looking forward to that!

I hope this weekend's racer have a blast!

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

Jay- if you are dealing with the red ribbon logo Overhead Doir Company of ______, I am disappointed in your experience.  I was a lawyer for the big company ( Overhead Door Corporation) for 10 years and that is NOT the service level the dealers should be providing!  I just got my first pension check, in fact.  It was a fun by stressful job.  Kids got crushed under garage doors.  Overhead owns Genie, too.

2.1 rushed treadmill miles before early flight to Dallas.  Back to my running roots/routes for a few days.

      Marathon Iowa 2014

Good morning.  Today's topic of choice - overhead doors.

Jay - it is very important that they get the size of the spring correct.  When I moved in to the PBJ mansion (shack?), one of my garage doors had two different sized springs on it (I never noticed until later).  Eventually, the weaker spring's cable actually snapped in mid-use.  That's a scary thing.

Planned rest day (ultimate taper).  Will still probably do some fizzy lifting and spinnerooni at lunch.  6 am flight to DC tomorrow.  But the most exciting part is our 6 pm dinner plans - the restaurant is called "The Pig."  Pulled pork is carbo loading, right?

DD is tapering ahead of her 25K Trail Run tomorrow, so I ran solo this morning.  68F and 87% humidity felt reasonable so I decided on a Tempo run. First 5 miles were 9:20, 10, 26, 16 &13 which would fit well as MP for a goal marathon time of about 4:05. Miles 6&7 were both at 8:56 or HMP for a goal half time of 1:57. Last 1.4 miles at 8:35, which is about my 10K pace. Total of 8.4 miles at average of 9:05 pace. Felt wonderful.

Not quite sure what a coach would say about today's run or my goal paces, so perhaps a good job that I don't have a coach! I've very much adopted the 'experiment of one' training method since I started running two and a half years ago. Apart from setting myself a target mileage for the year, I have no training schedule and I mix in a few trail miles most weeks. I often run many of my miles with a group or with DD and let them set the pace. My prime concerns are to remain injury free and to enjoy my running. I've very much surprised myself with how competitive I have become in my AG.

          Started running at age 60.

          AG 60-64 PR - 5K 25:45, 10K 53:28, HM 1:57:39, Marathon 4:32:09

          AG 65-69 PR - 5K 26:11, HM 2:02:39, Marathon 5:04:47

Last regular season meet of the year and Districts are next Tuesday. This season always goes by so fast!  We had a fun meet yesterday - first one in the rain. brrrr, that was cold!
The whole month of October, our XC kids have donned pink, aside from their uniforms - pink socks or pink headbands. Well yesterday we went a little crazy and did pink hair too. well except for me. I have naturally very light blond hair and don't want pink hair for weeks since that temporary spray on stuff does not come out of blond hair well at all.

Raining hard again today, but hoping it stops a bit this afternoon as I would really like to do a few miles before my race tomorrow. I always feel better if I can run 2-3 miles the day before a race.  Bowling day with the work peeps though - so at least I'm not sitting at my desk all day like normal.

TammyinGP, the Facebook pictures on the bus looked fun. Of course party lights on a bus will always enhance the x-country experience. Smile Btw, did Coach Keven dye his hair, too? I saw he was rockin' the pink bandana.

9.5 miles around town for me this morning.

yes, he colored his hair pink too - lots of gel to give it that wild "caveman" look, then pink spray all over. just harder to see on brown hair.

Been a long week of work with a couple 12+ hour days, but yesterday it calmed down and I left early and stopped at the gym on the way home for a good workout.  Since my left calf has been bothering me again I spent the last few days on the ARC trainer at the gym.

I went to the gym again this morning but after I was done with the ARC workout I tried the treadmill out for a half mile and my calf felt fine. So I'll give it a go running tomorrow morning. I'll dig my compression socks out of the back of my sock drawer and see if they help.

Did anyone get to see Uranus with the naked eye last night? (I love saying that.)  Uranus was in opposition to the sun and at one of it's closest distances to Earth.  I tried to pick it out but I couldn't tell if I was looking at the blueish planet or just another star.  I thought I was seeing it, but when I used binoculars, it didn't look blue.  So who knows what I was looking at?

Meteor shower tonight but I don't want to stay up past midnight to watch.

Well, no more dailies the day before your tomorrow which would be my today (Saturday) but now will again be my tomorrow.  Yes, sad to say DW and I are heading home today (your tomorrow) and will arrive a few hours before we leave today in LAX. (That last bit is really true!). When we get in later today (Saturday for those of you that have now lost track) my DW and I will try to stay awake during dinner with some friends. Door-to-door we figure it will be about 30 hours.

Good luck to our racers this weekend. Those running the MCM it is one of my favorite marathon routes!

I did mean TomW as opposed to TSelbs yesterday.  No sighting of TSelbs in awhile, it seems . . .

A number of years ago, I accidentally backed into our garage door, putting a bit of a dent in it.  Not a big one, but also not unnoticeable.  The Hub was out of town at the time.  He asked how I could've backed into the door, what I was doing, etc.  To this day, I haven't told him how/why, just that I obviously backed into the garage door and that's really all he needed to know.  The subject came up the other day again.  I just gave him a matter-of-fact shrug and continued doing what I was doing.  The Story: We keep the door cracked enough for the cats to crawl under.  It was pouring down rain that day, and I was trying to get close enough to keep the rain from going under the door.  . . . I got a little too close. Someday I'll tell him the whole short story . . . maybe.

Jay said he'd be nice if my chiropractic work helps.  Something to look forward to!

I got home too late last night from Bonkos to even consider getting up at O-dark 30 this morning.  Will get in a workout after work.

OK - Back to work (unfortunately, my work space today is not a bowling alley . . . .)

I backed into our garage door from the inside at our last house.  I did some real damage.  It was dark and early morning- I was on the way to the gym.  I hit the garage door opener button and put it in reverse.  I had hit the wrong button and opened the other garage door.  Mine was still closed......  (Yeah- and I was a lawyer for a garage door company for 10 years... should know better...)

Hey y'all, 5 miles pre-dawn with delightful temps in the upper 40s.  At lunch I joined a work colleague who I've been working with.  We did 6 x 400m and his times are coming down....both for the intervals and especially for the recoveries.  Total of 7.5 on that for a 12.5 mile day.

Which sounds like a bit much since I'm doing a half marathon tomorrow....but as the RW folks know, I don't have too much common sense!  We'll see how it goes.  No expectations or goals.  Just going to have fun and if the shirt matches the logo I'll be happy (ran this race, the Ironclad Half Marathon last year and suggested making the ironclad more prominent).

Evanflein, I bet you were there.  Going to try and post a couple of photos from the cookout/award ceremony.  My mom still doesn't believe me about the nipple chafing. Update--going to have to learn how to post pictures here.....

                            Hello everybody!

There was no school, today, so the cross country team ran, this morning, at the site of the upcoming Sections Meet.  I had to work, so I went on my own 8 miler after work.  It wasn't quite as fun.

Okay--I have to get up and get in a 16 miler before practice in the morning, so I'd better get to bed.  See ya!

No running for me today, I was rudely awakened by sharp pain at 05:00. I unfortunately knew exactly what it was from a couple years ago: Kidney Stone.

Popped some ibuprofen and went about my business because there's really nothing you can do other than drinking a lot of fluids. So far so good, not debilitating like last time. I probably could have run this afternoon, but I'm still fuzzy from the pills, and I had to take the boy to buy a new computer after school.

Maybe tomorrow, but home in time to watch Oregon lose to whoever they play tomorrow.

5.6 miles for me on Friday, followed by about 30 minutes of weights and core.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."
