Let's Reach the Beach Together: The Fan Club Turns 10! (Read 45 times)

This is your big chance to join the Rosie Ruiz Fan Club and enjoy all of the perks that come with it! All right, there are no perks. But we have a great time running the Reach the Beach Relay each year. This year we leave for the Bretton Woods New Hampshire starting line on Thursday September 15. We finish and head home on Saturday September 17. Speed, yours, does not matter! This team is a 30 hour party on wheels. We will win nothing. So join up!

For those unfamiliar with these multi day relays, the course is 200 miles long. We will have 2 vans with 6 runners in each. Vans are on the course one at a time. Van 1 goes first. All 6 of its runners run in order. Then Van 1 hands off to Van 2 and the 6 runners in Van 2 run in order. This repeats back and forth until everyone has run 3 legs. Each runner's total distance comes to between 14 and 22 miles. If you can run a 10k you can run the relay.

I am sad to say that this year we are losing coastwalker who has imprudently decided to spend his anniversary with his DW instead of in a van with 5 other people. I know, I know, there is no accounting for taste or marital relations. Nevertheless, on the good news front he has graciously agreed to let us use his house as a base of operations once again! That means we have place to shower, change and clean up post race! Yippee! I guess membership in the team does come with a perk!

In other big news we have a coach this year! Well, sort of. Not one that will help you run. This is the Rosie Ruiz Fan Club after all. Rather one that will help you say win at all costs if you know what I mean. Not officially help mind you. But in spirit. Want to know more? Join up for the answer! First person on the team to guess our coach's identity wins, . . . wins, . . . a bunch of high fives! How's that for a prize! For the record Mariposai is ineligible since she already knows the answer.

How do you join up you ask? Easy, send me a note either via email or via the RA messaging system saying you want to join. I then do some magic and the next thing you know you will get a link from Ragnar (which owns the Reach the Beach Relay) that you can click on to register for the team. It is that easy!

Mariposai has not posted here but we are now up to 5 committed team members! Almost halfway there. For those of you in procrastination mode, once we hit the magic number (12 team members) that is it! We will try to sign up an alternate or two but if you want in for sure now is the time! Hear that Milktruck? Sign up already! I promise to help get vans, get them delivered and returned so that we do not lean so heavily on your good graces like last year.

Mariposai actually clicked on the link to register with Ragnar. Signed up was when she said to me she would join up!

In other news . . . we have 12 runners! Yes you read that right! March has not even ended and we have a full team. Amazing. I have never seen the roster fill up this fast. It is also the first year where the team is mostly female. We have 9 women and 3 men. In many years, we fall below the 6 women on a team mark for eligibility into the mixed team category. Then again we lose in that division as well as in the male team category so it is not clear that any of this really matters. This year . . . we have a top secret plan. We are parking the vans 1 mile from the finish. When the first time is 5 miles away our 12 runner will head out and cross the finish line. Shhhhh . . . Rosie would be proud.

It looks like the team has an opening. I am very sorry to report that we are losing deez4boyz to her foot injury.  Very sad to lose her for what would have been her third year with the team. But, the good news is this is your big chance to join the 10th anniversary team! Just send me a message via RA and I can get you signed up.

It's actually my sciatica/piriformis issues holding me back, but I hope someone here is able to fill my spot!! You will have a blast!'

Amazingly we filled back up in just a couple of days. Our newest team member is not an RA poster, but a really great guy despite that one shortcoming!
