Oh, i forgot to mention that the purple martins are back! I wonder if any of them are the same ones that were here last year. We also have a couple of mallard ducks hanging around, and on, the dock. I sure hope they aren't making a mess out there.

      Hello everybody!

I gave the sermon at church, this morning.  In my opening remarks, I made kind of a joke about the importance of kids staying in school.  After the service, a lady came up and told me that a kid in our congregation--who is struggling in school and was actually thinking about dropping out--has decided to stick it out after hearing my sermon.  Wow.  You just never know who you might influence with what you say...sermon or no sermon.

My watch band is hanging on by a shear plastic thread.  After looking at all the local stores to find the watch I want and finding nothing--I drove to the Mall of America.  Surely, there would be a store with my watch in the Mall of America!  Two hours later, I drove home...with no watch.  The only thing I accomplished was reassuring myself that there is no reason to ever go to that place ever again as long as I live.

When I got home, I mowed my lawn and over-seeded my front yard.  It is looking pretty ragged.  I hope it works.

So--with all the walking around, today, I decided to take another day off, let my heel and calves calm down, and go at it tomorrow.  And that's it--I'm not taking any more days off before the marathon.  I hope.

      Okay--gotta go.  See ya!

3.1 miles in 24:05. Too fast to be easy but too slow to be speedwork. I wanted to get the heart pumping and the legs moving though.

(BTW, it's never a good sign that I'm researching stretching, core work, and running injuries. )

Speaking of which...I'm reading a thread on Let's Run about dealing with arthritis and one post includes: "When I was 70 I developed pain under my patella and had to stop running.  [...] Finally after 12 months I managed to start running slowly again every day, a short distance at first then gradually increasing up to 3 hours. At seventy two and a half I ran the first sub 3 hour marathon by a 70 year old...."  Wait, what?!!  Then I glance over at the poster's name.  Yep, Ed Whitlock!

Tramps - just thought I'd pass on the advice of my orthopod.  I went to him with knee pain that came on while training for marathon.  from the MRI, they said you have a tear in your meniscus and  with X-rays, let's add in arthritis.  we can fix the tear, but you're still going to have pain from the arthritis.  i then asked what should i do - the answer, whatever doesn't hurt - it's not going to make a difference.  so i run and bike  -generally not  running 2 days in a row, altho i can bike consecutive days because it's not as stressful.

          good luck!

Hey all. Overdid it and now have sore calves. 8.4 miles of wonderful trails at sunrise with running crew.

            Mike - that is awesome.

No time to read more. Sorry.

Working tonight before another business trip. All glamour.

            Have a great one.

Holly - remember the energy crises when President Carter capped federal building thermostats at 65 degrees?  The governor up in Erika-land requested subsidies for extra furnaces to comply.

Jay - the two-mile march was already finishing for some before others at the end could get started.  It would be nice to do A2 too for the 50th in 2020.

I keep my thermostat at 60, and it's usually fine.  We have a wood stove if it gets chilly.

I went and ran my favorite 10 mile loop in Golden Gate Canyon State Park today - I've missed my trails!  But hey - who took all the oxygen while I was away???  Gorgeous day here, almost 60 degrees and sunny.  Of course, it's supposed to snow up to a foot later in the week...

Mike, nice that you made a difference to that kid today!

Re: sore knees - a friend recently had pain in his knee, and thought it was arthritis or getting old or something.  Turns out he had tight hips and glutes, and with PT, he's back to normal.  He said he ran 70 miles last week!

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

Same here. I ran 4 miles with the Easy Pacer. I wanted to get a heart pumping and my legs moving, but with my asthma barking at me that level of exertion was at about 11 minute miles for me today, but hey, I will take it. There are people who would consider 11 minute miles their speed work out.

What a fun thread today. We had a great bunch of racers this weekend. If you want to read about their adventure, go to the Racing report for this weekend. It is great!

Welcome home to the no-oxygen zone, Carolyn. I bet you'll get used to it again pretty quickly.

Mike, just go online and find accessories for your watch model. They all sell replacement parts like bands. What model do you have? I think I still have a replacement strap for the Garmin 305 I no longer use. Be kind to those ATs and heels, and good job on the sermon today. Always nice when you can make a difference.

Ok, too tired to comment on more. I ran 11.4 miles today on totally sproinkless legs. I wonder if I need to be doing some strength work (more than hills) because my quads and glutes frequently feel weak and fatigued. Bleh. Didn't run the distance I wanted today, but still calling it my "long" run and a little over 43 miles for the week, so met my goal of 42+. Will have to be good enough.
