I had a bout with compartmental syndrome in my right shin a few yrs back. I felt the pain early on and figured it was shin splints, so talked to my sports chiro about it. He diagnosed it as CS and did some ART-like therapy on it. I took it easy for a few wks, iced, stretched and he did about 3 treatments on it. It went away and hasn't returned but I sought help real early on so I think that helped. Johnny, for those that remember him (a KR poster) has also had recurring episodes of CS over the past year or so.
ran last night again, at the track, while my son was at his bootcamp. Only got in 3.2 miles though. it was so hot. The sprinklers were on in the infield - along the back stretch of the track, so I ran through them each time - and I was already dry by the time I got to the other side of the track. that's how hot and dry it was. Today should hit upper 90's. I've run 3 days in a row now - might run again tonight - but then again, I might not. . . .

Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday. Like my birthday sister Nancy, I also had salmon for dinner! It was a lovely evening and DH and I ate out on the porch. DD is away this week at music camp, but tomorrow we go to pick her up and hear her final camp concert, so we're celebrating again by going out to our favorite Indian/Nepalese restaurant on the way home.
No time for a run yesterday. I had an all day client meeting that ran late. Oh, well, it was hot anyway. So I sat on my butt all day, didn't run, had a big salmon dinner, then had chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream. I'm feeling fat. Back on the wagon today.
Karin, it's so cool that your son is running 6 miles with you!
Tom, good luck with your colonoscopy tomorrow. I had one done last year, and the procedure itself wasn't bad, since they give you really good drugs that make you forget everything. But that stuff they give you to drink the day before is so awful! I had a stare down contest with the final glass of the stuff I had to drink on the morning of my procedure - it took forever to actually gag it down. Sadly, I haven't been able to even look at Gatorade since then, and I used to like it. It just reminds me of the awful stuff...
I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

Erika – yup, my retainer has yanked out many a temporary crown. Yesterday, I went to the dentist to deal with a loose crown on a dental implant I have. He said he just needed to pop off the crown, tighten up a screw, and put it back on. So the hygienist puts something like a minty tootsie roll between my teeth and says, bite down. She said it would get hard and sticky, like a Jolly Rancher, and when I pried my jaws apart, it would pop out the loose crown. “What about my other dental work?” I thought. Sure enough, when I pried my jaws apart, not only did I pop out the loose crown, but the crowns on either side of it as well..... ...(they glued them back in)...
I told my DS yesterday that he should go out and run a mile on my TM, since soccer conditioning starts in a couple weeks. He came in later to tell me that it had shut itself off somehow, overheating maybe in our hot garage, while he was running on 10mph. "It goes up to 10mph?", I thought.
Wildchild - can't they just give you a couple pills, instead of making you drink a gallon of yucky stuff?
TomS - remind me to schedule any future colonoscopy at 6am...
Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Holly - Your post about your crown and then your son the TM cracked me up.
I haven't had a colonscopy, but I had to clean out the ole system when I had my gall bladder remove. I had to drink this "grape" flavored crap with lots of water chaser. Well, I didn't read thoroughly re the water chaser, how much, how often, and had to call the doctor. "Drink a lot of water now and just wait. Things'll start happening." About an hour or so later . . . . . . . Charmin TP is not as soft as they like to proclaim.
Well, I was awake before the sun came up (thank you, Wilson), but I didn't crawl out of bed until about 5:40 - except for kicking Wilson outside. Fed the brood then headed out to my workout room for 50 min of upper body and core while watching "House." With taper, I always feel like I backslide in my strength training.

Leslie, I let the strength training backslide in general in the summer. Just don't seem to have time to fit it in. It's more of an "off season" thing for me, I think.
That stuff is called "Go Litely" or somesuch and that is such a first class euphemism, yecch. Good luck TomS! And big kudos for having the test.
....................................................................and Holly--you called it. I had a doctor friend who always scheduled his colonoscopies (he had colon cancer in his family) for the first one in the day b/c he said the overnight sterilization of instruments was much more thorough than those done during the day.
As predicted, D. aced his stress test--cardio said he compared favorably to the "uber-law enforcement types." I am taking that to mean CIA/FBI hardbodies and not our local lovable but chubby donut-dunking finest.
I am really glad to know that Holly did not fast for 3 days.
I took a rest day today. Nada. OK, I went to the dentist at lunch (routine cleaning) and my legs felt tired last night and I just couldn't countenance the gym so, geeelllteeee. (Someone give me some Hail Marys to do, please!)
I had a bout with CS--it was explained to me as sort of like your muscle is similar to sausage in that it is in a casing. When the muscle grows too fast (due to ramping up your training a little fast), it presses against the casing and causes the pain, b/c for some reason, the muscle grows faster than the casing, or sheath, can grow. Icing helped. Anyway, hang in Dave.

worked late tonight, it is a little warm, I am a wimp. I will swap todays 8 miler with tomorrows rest day.
Ammos, give my congrats to Dan, I know he studied for his test, we knew he would ace it.
Tom, I will throw in my two cents worth,
I suspect you are going through the worst of the prep now. I have had the procedure a couple of times for a couple of different things. the first time, for the prep they just gave me a little bottle of some yucky tasting stuff to drink. they don't use that anymore because apparently it caused occasional kidney failure in young healthy people. now you are probably working your way through the gallon jug of CoLyte. (chemically it is similar to antifreeze) I preferred the orange flavored powder. Some people have mentioned the fasting thing. As everyone who has been through this knows, it is a bit of a pain. it is not pleasant. but since I could get my normal calories from gatorade, apple juice seven-up and other sugary drinks, it wasn't horrible.
A doctor friend suggested that I ask them to skip the amnesia drug, (they still give strong pain killers) I am glad I did both times. they can stand by with it and give it to you during the procedure if you wish. last year when I had it, the anesthesiologist actually seemed happy when I requested they not use it.
If you are able to skip it, the recovery will be easier. It was kind of cool to see and hear what the doctors were seeing, If you google it you will find that the amnesia drugs cause lots of problems for some people (but anything causes problems for some people) there is also anecdotal evidence that the doctors will be gentler if they know you are watching.
Some countries skip ALL drugs for the procedure I wouldn't want to do it without the pain killers but anytime in the future I will continue to ask that they only have the amnesia stuff standing by.
good luck, but I know you won't need it

Dave, that's a waste of a good fast! If I'm going to fast, I want to drop some weight for the effort....
Thanks for the info about the amnesia drugs. If they still give me some good pain relievers, I would be willing to forego the knock you out stuff. I think you're right, it might be interesting to be listening to them while they do it (as long as I was comfortably numbed).
