Tet, we still have snow piles in my yard, but they're getting smaller every day!  I even took my snow tires off yesterday and put on my summer tires - hope I'm not dissing the weather gods and asking for snow!

I met a friend for 8.3 miles in the local state park this morning. She's registered for a 50k race there (Golden Gate Dirty 30) in 3 weeks, so I showed her some of the course.  It will be her first ultra, and it's a hard one.  I'm running the course a week before the race with some friends, just for fun, and we're staging cars at two trailheads to be aid stations.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

1.6 mile power walk at lunch. Sorry, that's all I got.  Weird ache in my arch in one foot. Not sure what set that off.

Bike mirrors. I don't use one. I use my ears and eyes/neck by looking back, which is the way it's always been done.

Murray, congrats, and how far away is the next town over?

Roch, I am jealous of your e-bike.  My RadCity is a beast, weighs over 63 pounds.  It's really for commuters and pizza delivery guys.  But oh the power....

Tet, we still have snow piles in my yard,

Wild1 - I figured you'd be running with snow in the alpines for most of the summer, if not, at least seeing some somewhere up on high for most, if not all, of the summer so I'm surprised some of your piles still remain on May 10.  Will your run this weekend, and anywhere else for the Golden Gate, involve snowfields?

Murray - can you find snow on the north slopes of your alpines for most of the summer?  Sure must be beautiful looking across the water from the M/V Badger to the greening shoreline and the sturdy evergreens up to the snow lines. Mostly Sitka spruce? Do you have any glaciers? Any rock ptarmigan? Any badgers?

          Thanks.

It's 32 miles to Terrace, BC which has a lot more going on because it's on the main highway to Prince Rupert. Our town, Kitimat, has no through road.

North slope snow in summer? On the bigger peaks...around here that would be mountains over 9,000' which is big, considering the base of the mountains are close to sea level. Most mountains over 7,000’ would have a glacier.

Mature forests on the valley floor around here are a western hemlock, sitka spruce, balsam fir, and red cedar mix. As you climb in elevation yellow cedar, mountain hemlock, yew and juniper trees start to mix in.

Tons of glaciers. At the head of every tributary valley off Douglas Channel and the Kitimat River Valley are bigger mountains with glaciers. They have been receding quickly, just like everywhere else, but a lot of ice remains. During the summer, if it hasn't rained for a while, Gardner Canal turns as turquoise as a Rocky Mountain lake from all the glacial runoff.

We have grouse here. Think you would have to go inland a couple hundred miles to find ptarmigan.

No badgers. Our boat has had the name Badger through it's three owners since being built in 1982. Seems fitting...small, tough & scrappy

            MurrayM

Here's Badger anchored at Brim River Bay in Gardner Canal where the ocean was turquoise from all the melt from surrounding mountain glaciers. There is so much runoff here that sea gulls take fresh water baths in mid channel because of all the fresh water on top of the denser salt water.

                Hi Masters,

No workout for me today, but I had fun volunteering at a HS Track Meet that GN was attending.  This was his team's final home meet of the year, and I think he only has a handful of meets left at this point, maybe two dual meets and two Saturday invitationals, if I'm remembering right.  Today instead of running in the 100 and 200 meter sprints and occasionally the 400, the coach put him in the 1600 and 200.  Considering he doesn't do much real training, he did pretty well for his first ever 1600 - a 6:17.   The coach afterward was talking to me about moving him to the middle distances and thinking about having him run cross country next fall, but chances are it'll be at another school, back home, rather than here.  Unfortunate in some ways because our school has a lot of sports teams in spite of only graduating 70 - 90 kids per year, so there are tons of opportunities in most sports.  Back home, he'll be going to a school that graduates 350 and he'll still be a little fish but in a much bigger pond.

My job was measuring and recording at the shot put circle.  I had fun.  It was a beautiful day.  High 70's, very dry, still, sunny.  My favorite weather for throwing.  Actually it could be 25 degrees warmer and I'd like it even more!

Oh, it turned out that the mom that was helping me to measure the shot put during the girl's competition, a mom of one of the throwers I've been helping out a couple of times at practice, is someone I coached on the girls track team 35 years ago.   I would never have picked her out but when I started talking to her it was clear, as she was a very pleasant young woman with no drama back then and it seems her daughter is very much like her.  That was a fun part of the day, too.  Sort of whets my appetite for coaching some day, in my retirement years.  Definitely something I've thought about doing in the spring of 2025.  (Don't laugh, it's almost here!)

PS That was an Earthrunner reference (cinder warning track at the baseball diamond) earlier, but I'm not sure how many of us are still around from those days.....

                  MurrayM happy not married anniversary!

Holly S. I hope you get the job. But I really hope you get a job that pays better and is full time if you want it.

Let me see, it has been a busy few days. I ran a 10k on Sunday and managed 3/8 in my AG. Not impressive, but as my DW points out in the 60+ AG you have a lot of adverse selection! (It is a term economists use to mean who you are dealing with are anything but representative of the overall population. In this case, it means both alive and in good enough shape to run a 10k.) Today I went on a run with a colleague of mine. She is just starting up her running after a baby break. Needless to say, her starting back up speed easily matches my not starting back up speed. There has to be a way to avoid dying and still not get old.  Work has been mostly annoying cat herding. Cutting to the chase, I am trying to avoid seeing some issues that have arisen with students contesting rules by parsing rules in a way that seems like a stretch to me. Still, it would be better to cut off that avenue and to do that I need a bunch of other academics to agree to new wording. Think of doing this with a group of people that would fight over whether to call their house, "a home", "a residence", "a domicile" or some other name.

Live like you are dying not like you are afraid to die.

BTY- good report on the meet.   I know you must have mixed feelings about GN leaving your home.  He’s done so well, but I know it’s a struggle with the other family members.    You’ve really made an impact, though.  I’m sure of that.    He sounds like he has some running potential- especially if he trains more.  I hope there is some opportunity at the next school.

I thought that was an odd thing for you to say but didn't recognize it as being from the earthrunner era... 😳

Hello everyone! It must be time for my maybe once a week check in...

Jay, you are being smart about not pushing it during your recovery. There are a few of us (*ahem*) who could learn that lesson...

Tet, oh yes there are still snow piles. In our yard, sides of the road, and some huge dirt-covered snow mountains in the various snow dumps around town that'll be there till mid-summer, at least. And to make things even better, it's been snowing the last couple days! We got up yesterday to an inch of snow on our deck and yard. Yuk. I'm so over the bright white blanket of snow BS.

Leslie, so sorry to hear about Kate. And it sounds like family issues are interfering, too. That's really too bad. Hugs to you and Karen.

Murray, happy anniversary! And I loved your pictures the other day, and today. Wow.

Hi Starr! So nice to see you posting! Mariposai, too! Missed you guys.

Not sure if I told you guys but we had flooding in our downstairs apartment bedroom where our tenants' boys are. In 30 years of owning this place, that's the first time that room has gotten wet. Soaked the pad and carpet, came in through the window frames (shouldn't they be sealed??) and just made a mess of the place. It did seem contained to that room though, and once the wet pad/carpet was out we set up fans and heaters and it dried out in a few days. We bought a nice pad and carpet remnant and actually found someone to install it on Saturday. So, that fix is done. This summer we'll do the same sealing/insulation/landscaped backfill behind the house when we install the new window egress openings (to replace the old culvert-style things that are collapsing). I'm really tired of this house.

Holly, good luck on the job thing. I wouldn't offer to reduce salary though. Agree to full time and I bet you'd show your worth and have your hours increased pretty quickly.

I did a 5k on Saturday. The plan was to walk it with my DIL and Riley, but my son wanted to push Riley's stroller so they took off pretty quickly and left me behind. Oh well. I walked with a woman I've known for awhile who used to work at the university too. She doesn't run anymore either, so we had a great walk, talking about all kinds of things and finished under an hour (57:35 for me, 6/8 in AG).

PT yesterday, in the pool. Then a bike ride on the recumbent bike at the rec center. Today was an early mammogram, shopping for my folks, and another 10+ miles on the bike at the rec center. Then did my full PT/weights/strength workout this afternoon. Now I'm tired!

Jay - There are better ways to loose weight. The way you keep plugging away is impressive.

Leslie - I have more respect for a person who says they do not know what they are doing than "it's not my job".

I told her that she will look back on the school years as the most carefree in her life.

She said, “I’m not falling for it.”

Holly- I hope that works out, but will you eventually want to go back to full time?  do you need insurance?

I definitely want to work full time, but am also going a bit stir crazy.  And I get my insurance through my DH, who works for the county, so that is covered, thankfully.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."
