Marathon Maniac #957
For those of you who are new, this is the 40/40 thread, for people who are over 40 years old who run 40 miles/week or more. We give Free Passes to those who come really close or try really hard...
Here’s what I have for last week's tally.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."
Thanks Holly
I will do a mini-taper to a non-goal race on Sunday ... so mileage will decline as the week goes on. The race is the Glacial 50 Mile in Greenbush, WI on the Ice Age Trail (Northern Kettle Moraine) One of the goals will to not make my achillies worse. This race is pretty hilly with many rocks and roots. With all the leaves mostly down it will be an adventure on the ankles.
Day Plan Actual Commentary Monday Speed 6/14 Hopefully 3-4 x 2 miles Cut it short at 2x2 miles - Felt good, but decided it was enough in race week Tuesday Easy 7/6 Easy pace Wednesday half ass hills + speed 4 TM hills with a fast-flat run out interval post hill (1/4 mile hill - 1/4 mile speed) Thursday taper 6 Easy pace Friday taper 7 Easy pace Saturday taper 4 Easy pace + some half ass TM hills Sunday Glacial 50 Mile 50 Ice Age trail in Northern Kettle Moraine - Very Sloppy and Muddy - Rained 2 inches Sat and 3 inches during the race on Sunday. Had to walk most up and downhills the last 20 miles. Fell 6 times. But managed 3rd OA 7:58. Total 104 Hoping to be > 100 total for week

Long dead ... But my stench lingers !
DoppleBock, I thought about that one (actually, I was thinking of the marathon) but didn't like reading race reports about all the leaves and turned ankles. I ran a Half in the Southern Kettle Moraine unit last fall (NF Challenge) and really like those trails. Yes, it's hilly, but the hills aren't huge. Enjoy the heck out of the day and aim toward the leafless areas if possible. Holly, have fun with your Half.
My plan (first 20-miler of this training cycle)"
Recovery pace

Rest
6 miles
Including 3 M tempo run on TM
6.2 miles
More recovery
More rest (I am 64 after all)
10 miles
Hal Higdon Intermediate 2 plan
20 miles
Long run postponed a day
44 miles
31.2 miles
Way short this week
The Northern KM is much hillier ... I have run Ice Age 50M a few times and you should consistently be 30-45 minutes faster on Ice Age than Glacial 50M because of the less hilly and less technical trail.
Glacial is a fun throw back race - When times were simplier and runners didn't need to be so pampered or have the event have entertainment or be a circus.
7 aide stations in 50 miles - Well crewed, but will Gels, H20 and simple food. Trail is well marked and an out and back. Of the 50 miles in the out and back there are 12=/- miles that you need to be careful, the rest just has some rocks and roots.
Afterward there is chilli and or soup, sandwiches, a few desserts, chips soda and beer - Many people bring beer to share and sit around in lawn chairs or in the fire station hall for a few hours.
I like low key races - So this is my favorite ultra race.
Hi Holly!
Shooting for 40 again this week.
M - rest day
T - 7.7 miles
W - rest day
Th - 8 miles
F - 4.6 miles
Sa - rest day
Su - 19.7 miles

It is suppose to start raining early Saturday morning and rain through most the race Sunday - Likely 2+ inches over the period.
This is gonna be a wet, muddy, cold, messy and fun run!

I hope it was dryer than predicted.

Thanks Holly! Sorry I'm late to the party again. This has been a crazy week for running. I record what I had kind of planned in my head for the week then, of course, show the actual.

1:31:02--there was a strong wind blowing from the west so I altered my course to finish with the wind to my back...but I got lost and ended up with 12.2 miles...but is was fun.

40:35--my route took me by a bar where I noticed some guys I knew were inside so I stopped in for "one quick one"...4 beers and 2 hours later, I got a ride home

1:33:13 for the 1/2 marathon and 6:34 for the .8 cool down. I received a call yesterday, telling me about a guy who just found out he had testicular cancer--to make a long story short--I ran a 1/2 marathon on the course that he was supposed to run in 2 weeks. It was really pretty cool.
