RunnerKSA I am a big fan of Crested Butte for skiing. I hear the area is beautiful nearly all year round.

Holly S. I am not sure golden beets taste all that different from red ones. Perhaps a bit milder and sweeter, but just a bit. They do add some nice color to a plate however.

BTY I was running at the track a bit earlier this summer for speed work. On the plus side it is flat. On the down side it sure is dull!

Mike E for that next eclipse, can I join you? Where is the viewing supposed to be good? We can drive fly teleport there and meet up. What do you say?

    evanflein hills, I so sympathize.

I did not have a great race today. It was 8 miles and my legs gave out between miles 5 and 6. Not good. There was one (last) hill that did me in. I have always been a terribly slow uphill runner. I am going to have to do something about that, which means pushing it up the hills during my training runs. So that is what I plan to do this coming week. Tuesday is my mid-distance run day. The final 5 miles include two big pretty steep hills and one long upgrade. I am going to see if I can keep the average pace as close to an 8 minute mile during those last 5 miles as I can. I am not hopeful as last week I did not manage that pace for 5 miles on a relatively flat stretch. But I figure if I do not push it, I am unlikely to give it the necessary effort to have it do much good.

Hills are killer in races since you are already at such a hard effort.  I remember snickering at what Grandma's Marathon claimed what was a tough hill at about mile 22-  until I got there during the race.........

We've skied here, too, but love it especially in the summer.  It's still so out of the way that it doesn't quite get the crowds that Vail, Breckinridge and some of the other places get.

        Hello everybody!

The one cool thing about Mikey going to Oregon to see the eclipse is, that he and Ryan have hooked up and are spending the weekend, together.  By the end of the day, Ryan will know more about that eclipse than he ever knew he wanted to know...did I say "day"...I meant...10 minutes.  Poor Ryan...

I went 10.1 miles, today.  4.3 miles before the cc team showed up, 3 miles with my granddaughter and another one of the slower girls, and 2.8 to get to 10...well...10.1.

It was so fun running with GD...I call her "Weiner."  She is only doing cross country to get in shape for basketball so she really doesn't like to run all that much...okay...not at all.  But she is so funny.  This is a hilly course we were on, today, and she hated it.  I announced that we had just run 1 mile.  "One mile?!  That's it?!"  I just laughed.  After working with them up the first hill, we soon approached the next one.  "NOOOOOO!" she screamed!  "What's wrong," I asked.  "Not another hill!"  I just laughed.  After about 5 hills she was ready to quit.  "Is this the last one?"  "Nope," I said, "my favorite is coming up."  "Oh, great!"  After getting to the top and, as she's gasping for air, she asked me, "How can anybody think this is fun"?!"  I just laughed...then I announced that we had just completed 2 miles.  I think, if they could have caught me, they both would have killed me.

        Okay--gotta go!  See ya!

That's too funny, Mike. It'll be good to remind her of that when the season's over and she will have undoubtedly improved quite a bit.

Twocat, I didn't have a good race today, either. My legs were dead feeling from the start. I took a couple of walk breaks even on the steeper parts, yes on a 5k! It was misty, chilly (47° ) and muddy. Not as bad as last year's race (that was terrible) but slick in spots and I almost fell (but didn't!). So, struggled through it, hoping for a top ten finish but nope, I was 12th for women, having been passed by two in the last half. And the top three women were gals I'd never heard of. The winner was from Anchorage, and #2 and #3 were in the 15-17 AG and I'd never seen them before. And at least three of the speedier women here were not there. So man, I could've had an even worse showing if they'd been there! So, you can't control who shows up, that's for sure. But I need to get out of the practice of doing things like brush clearing and yard work the day before a race.  Somewhere along the line, my pre-race strategy has really gone south.

RKSA, my DH just got home late last night after driving the kids' new (to them) car up from Seattle. He had been at a conference in Keystone which is a pretty nice area. Lots of nice bike paths for running, if you can deal with the lack of oxygen.

Glad you figured something out there, Leslie. I don't know that I fully understood the problem, but glad you've found a trick.

Jay, the 20 miler is on tap for tomorrow. I'm planning on it taking a long time.

Erika, good luck on that 20 miler tomorrow. Sorry the race did not go well for you. I hear you about doing housecleaning and gardening before a long run or race. I do the same.

MikeE, glad to hear that your sons were abke to get together,  even for 10'.

The Easy Pacer and I decided to have a hiking date on our favorite hiking trail. We hike this loop every year. It is spectacular. No running for me, but I really enjoyed the day of hiking.

They're, actually, together for the weekend but I'm sure Ryan had heard enough about the eclipse after 10 minutes

Hi everyone and welcome Tea Olive! You'll like this group of crazy runners. That was a funny story about running with your GDD, Mike.

Last night MrStarr and I went to a comedy show In our little tiny town here in SW MN. There's a local 33 YO guy that got started in comedy and made it pretty big time, even to Letterman, Conan and Comedy Central. He came back to his hometown and brought three of his friends with him for the show. We laughed so hard we were crying. It was a a great time.

Earlier this week I said that I ran around the lake, but I lied... I didn't run the whole way, just 4 miles, then walked the .7 so, just wanted to come clean on that. Well this morning I DID run the whole way, albeit very, very slow.  After that I cleaned the pontoon, yuck what a mess the birds make! We had a nice cruise around the lake afterwards. Then the speedboat needed gas so we loaded it onto the trailer and took it to the station. Next time we should remember to fill up before we launch it the first time.

                Good running all.
