    Mornin' everyone.

    Tuesday’s tumultuous workouts:

RunnerKSA (3.3 miles before work on a beautiful Tennessee spring morning)

Tramps (sluggish, EZ 6 miles in humidity)

    Dave (4 Garmin-free miles)

BerthaSlayer (6.2 EZ miles off Bertha)

C-R (5 miles in Germany with hillage)

    Pfriese (11beautiful river trail miles)

    dg. (3.5 bird bath miles)

Tomwhite (40 min pool run with letters)

Deeze (1500m pool swim, 1 mile dog walk, 1 hr. computraining)

Tet (J o’clock 5 miles with sunrise before grey)

Mike (lifting weights  - made the report)

StarrRuns (3 EZ miles with dog walkers, no geese)

Spacityrunner (3.5 lunchtime miles in summertime heat)

    Evanflein (5.6 looking-like-crying miles)

Dave, I also find that if I skip certain stretches/exercises for a few days my body taps me on the shoulder (so to speak) and tells me in clear terms to get back to it.

Can’t help you with the flour issue, Rochrunner, but I’m glad the cookies came out great.

You’re right, C-R - this is a bit of a food-driven forum. Isn’t our love of foods part of what motivates us to run/walk as much as we do? Or is it the other way around?

Evanflein, I think if I changed my recipe to “Hashed Little Green Balls of Death with Lemon” it might not go over so well with some folks. Because you ‘hash’ the LGBs when you make this, they don’t resemble the original at all, so you might get away with it.

It must have been a great trip in ’74, StarrRuns, for your to remember all the details from it. Nicely done.

Tramps, are you sure you don’t have another question or two for Mike?

dg., here is the salad recipe. It’s pretty easy and pretty tasty:

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
    • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
    • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
    • 3 tablespoons pine nuts
    • 1 large or 2 small ripe tomatoes, about 8 ounces, thinly sliced
    • ½ pound fresh figs, cut into quarters
    • 1 ounce crumbled blue cheese, like Fourme d’Ambert, more to taste
    • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
    • Black pepper
      • PREPARATION
    1. In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar and salt. Whisk in oil.
    2. In a small skillet over medium-low heat, toast pine nuts, shaking the pan occasionally, until light golden, about 2 minutes.
    3. Spread tomato slices on a large plate. Scatter fig quarters and pine nuts over tomatoes. Sprinkle with cheese and thyme, drizzle with dressing and finish with pepper.

Hi and welcome, Texas CPA! Good luck in your comeback year. Building slowly is good. Let us know how we can help. And yes, stay away from mailboxes while you're running. And I can certainly relate to being somewhat undisciplined...

Fatozzig, I’ll send a message with the Little Green Balls of Death recipe. Congrats on the bursa improvement.

Marj, I really like your idea of white wine as a 'clear liquid' for medical fasting purposes!

Tammy, tennis 'matches' (not meets) works. David sure is carrying a heavy load, but he also seems to be that rare guy who can handle it all.

    Deeze, nice and well-earned soul-filling, post-workout lunch.

Holly, I’m so sorry about Daisy’s passing. As we’ve all said so many times, pets work their way into our families, and losing them is hard.

Good tapering, Mariposai. Sounds like a great girls weekend (with some running) coming up.

Spacityrunner, I have more than enough to do to keep up with my own yard, never mind someone else’s. And the commute from here in NH might be an issue. Meanwhile, that is some heat you’ve got working there this early in the year.

We had a great meeting late yesterday afternoon with a few guys who mountain bike in our newly-labeled town forest. We need to encourage more positive usage of the forest to help discourage some improper usage (target shooting, bonfires, dumping, etc.). They are excited to help us build hiking and running trails, as well as mountain biking trails, and to organize a clean-up day, and maybe even a planting day to help get the community involved. Good stuff!

I woke up on time for a workout this morning, but just felt that I needed to hit the reset button. So I fed the cat and then stretched out on a couch for a good and rejuvenative rest till it was time to get up and get the day started for real. I have 'breakfast with the boss' this morning, so maybe I'll walk the 3 miles to the restaurant and count that as at least a leg-stretcher.

    Have a greta Wednesday!

    Jay

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

3.1 this morning which I didn't feel like doing.  But- I did.  Nasty weather (cold rain) is moving in later, so this was the window to get outside.

Out there running since dinosaurs roamed the earth

I ended out taking my rest day yesterday and got a good charge on the new 235. I will try it out at lunch today.

        Trails are hard!

Holly--so sad to hear about Daisy Dog.  DD probably has a hard time remembering a time without her.

Monday I spent in a site visit to my project in CT and noticed my left foot was a little sore.  By the time i got home and got my boots off, it was getting past a little sore.  So yesterday morning when I woke up I was limping.  Since it was also pouring, an USRD was not a hard decision.  Stupidly, i did not take any advil until I got to work.  But by the end of the day, it felt pretty good.  This morning--only a faint notice that it was still there.  These weird, getting old aches and pains are frustrating when they just come and go.  So, out for 4.44 miles in a cloudy 37°.  Supposed to be 4.5, but decided i'd take the interesting number instead.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

          Tramps

Thanks, Jay. Interesting to hear. We're dealing with the same "promote positive use to prevent negative use" issue in the relatively new natural area preserve near our house.  Trails (that I run on) just officially opened for the first time this weekend, so it'll be interesting see what develops. Lots of ATVs and hunters on adjacent private property (that we're still trying to acquire and preserve).

Dave--it's all about forming good habits isn't it?  Gym over donuts.

            Doug--gotta love Craig's list...and chocolate chip cookies!

Welcome Texas. I totally did not laugh at the brick mailbox injury. Promise.

            Mike--Ah, yes, the Hanson brothers...

...no wait, the other Hansons.  As I read your response (thanks), it all came back to me.  I remember now that you were doing this. I'd even flirted with this approach a few years back and have their book around here somewhere. I'll have to look at it again.  Certainly seems to work for you.  You've been flying and will do great next month at Shiprock.

Starr--I think Tet's training!  (shudder)  I've been keeping quiet not to jinx it.

Ah, Holly, so sorry to hear of your dog dying.  They do become part of the family, don't they?

KSA--your "didn't feel like doing it" line reminded me of this old gem, "If people talked about other hobbies like they do about running." (a little foul language) Worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

            Stumpy--weird.  Hope it's just a one-time flare-up.

For the record: brussel sprouts broiled or fried?  I'm in.  Otherwise, yech.

Yesterday was very sluggish, today was pretty sproinky...even on the hills route.  Who knows why?  8.7 miles.

            Be safe. Be kind.

8.3 miles that included 3x2mile repeats. Was hard but not as hard as I'd feared.

Holly...... I'm so sorry to hear about Daisy! Hugs to you and your DD.

Things are looking up here, considering I finally ditched the air cast last Thursday. I've a lot of recovery still to go, but am walking ~1-2km a day along with 30 min on the spin bike. Worst part is that the break has worsened the previous mild chronic edema in the foot and ankle and the Physio seems quite concerned about it, so am using compression socks and Aleve to try to bring it down a bit.

At least I can now get into the garden to start cleaning up the beds. I've had snowdrops in bloom for the last month and my daphodils are budding. Seems that the voles managed to find most of the tulips I planted last fall... :-(

                Marathon Maniac #957

                  Hey folks.

I took a half day off so I could take Daisy to be cremated.  As old as I am, this is the first doggie death I have had to deal with as an adult.  When I was a kid, my parents would take care of the pet death issues, but as an adult, it usually falls to Mom (me) to do the tough tasks.  Sometimes it's no fun being a grown up.  I am overly affected, I think, because my DD is taking it so hard.  She was in hysterics last night, and teary-eyed on the way to school this morning.  Seeing her pain makes mine more pronounced.  (sigh)  This is why I resisted getting a dog for so long.....

On a happier note, the weather looks like it may be really nice for my marathon Sunday (fingers crossed), temps ranging from 45-70.  However, I have learned that an Ohio weather forecast can change drastically overnight, so we shall see....

7 miles for me on the TM this morning.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                  C-R

I'm so sorry Holly. One of our's is getting up in years and I dread that day when it comes. Until then we play with him like a puppy and make some memories. Hang on to those and it will help a bit.

Another 5 in the hills today. 60 degrees and sunny. Last day tomorrow and thankfully home. Missing my family.

Hey Mike - I recall some butt kicking from your boss. Water off a ducks' back man. If it wasn't something obvious on you, then its likely something on the boss and they can't manage to admit it. Reading a book called Multipliers. Highly recommend for business.

Hugs to you and your family Holly. It's always hard losing a pet, but when it's so sudden and unexpected, that makes it harder. At least with the pets we've lost, we knew their time was coming and basically had their departure under our control, so I guess in some respects that makes it easier - or easier to come to terms with.

I ended up not having the time to run yesterday despite how nice it was. Since it was David's last day at home before leaving at O Dark O Clock this morning (4:00 a.m.!), we wanted to have a good family meal and then making sure he got everything he needs packed, etc.

But I'll run for about an hour tonight after work.

David is carrying a very heavy load this year with his 3 AP classes. Junior year is toughest, but he wanted to carry a more difficult load his Jr year, so he can take it a bit easier his senior year and do more fun things.  He's also getting quite a few college credits this year and still pulling a 4.0 so far, but I know he's burning the candle at both ends some weeks. At least he doesn't have a job he's trying to squeeze into all this too.

3.75 miles today. It was very windy this morning but at least it wasn't hot as balls. A nice run on a concrete running trail by the river and about 25% of the run had shade trees.

Thanks for the tips on flour, Erika. I guess we're the only ones around here who bake (maybe something to do with long, cold winters?). I don't recall the brand we bought, but I got it at Whole Paycheck, so it was definitely expensive if not the best :-). By the way, we're starting to zero in on an Alaskan trip in the future and i told my DW that I know a source to get some good advice from if we need it.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Holly. Never had one, but I understand the attachment.

I've finally figured out that the best way for me to have good runs is to put two off-days between them. Felt really good today on a 5-miler. I might do another one tomorrow if the weather permits, but I do have to start ramping up my distance if I'm going to survive that HM in late May.

Another hi & welcome to Texas CPA!    Do you have a preferred form of address?

Thanks so much for the recipe Jay!

6 miles this morning at the gym, w/ 12 200's in there.    Then weights.     This was harder than it should of been.. .harder than it was maybe a month ago.    going to have to figure this out... that is the wrong direction.    Maybe I already know, in part.   Similar to what you mentioned, Erika, some of it may be just trying too hard... but it doesn't seem like it should be.   I had sort of a rough year, ... not anything unusual, just part of life, but I'm still behind in every way, & deeply tired.   So, for a while I sometimes took 2, even 3!  days off, when it seemed necessary, & was running fairly well. (it's all relative).    I'm increasing some now, though I know it isn't much, & running is harder.   Well.   Wherever you go, there you are.     There's no use fretting about it, I'll just try to have smart outweigh stupid (there's always a first time) & enjoy the gift.    I've had enough of time of no running & no anything to not just be glad I can do something!

Holly I am so sorry.   That must have been awful.   Like Tammy said, it's hard enough when you expect it; when it's 'time'.   And sure, dogs (& cats!) have tummy issues.  Nothing unusual.    Sad.    Had to have just blown you away.   Please hug Sarah for me.   Hugs to you too.    You all gave Daisy a wonderful life.

tw, thanks for the back brace info!   Will check it out.

I made up for jay's slacking with the usual 5'er

                                However, no sunrise

The streets were wet and the rain was cold as I ran alone

I saw the lights of a cozy place with lanterns all aglow

Somebody cried, "Don't run outside, come say, hello"

I thought of friends who used to run with me when we were young

Their memories shining within me have nothing to do with the sun

So be alive, go run outside, enjoy your run
