Saturday, May 1st.....MAY DAY.......Runs (Read 543 times)

    Good morning to all.

    MAY DAY

MAY DAY was celebrated in the early American years by some regions.   The concept was that "May Baskets" were made.  These baskets were small and filled with flowers or treats and left on someone's doorstep.  The basket giver would ring the door bell and run away.   The person receiving the basket would run and try to catch the fleeing giver.  If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged.    (Adapted from Wikipedia)

OK.....work with me here people.     This does have some possibilities for us.

We can use this tradition of MAY DAY to recruit new runners to the running world.    After we ring the door bell of the person we want to help start running, it will be key to run just fast enough to encourage them that they do have hope of catching us.   The basket can be filled with odds and ends of junk that we keep forgetting to pitch in the garbage.   Being experienced runners, we should not be in danger of getting caught....unless someone wants to, and that is ANOTHER story and we would like reports of those situations please.

Anyway, some of you can consider this as it was a thought that crossed my mind this morning.

Interestingly enough, I did a little over 1 mile last night with someone who I am encouraging to start.     I wanted them to feel like they had succeeded in doing "a whole mile" and wouldn't let them do more.  They were quite excited.........funny.

    Have a great Saturday.

      Good morning Joey

Do one brave thing today then run like hell!  That's my motto

May Day 1980 the Communist Party had a rally at a local steel mill gate.  The police (me) were called because they were blocking the entrance.  Words then pushing then some fists then a mini riot When it was all done 3 in hospital, 6 in jail, thank goodness they did not have cameras in eveyone's pocket like today or I'm sure I would have got fired.  Oh well,  I was young & baaaddd   BTW I was one of those in the hospital with multiple minor injuries.

Working finish line at a small 5k this morning then off to Pittsburgh for Half tomorrow.

      Enjoy !!!

Courage ! Do one brave thing today...then run like hell.

Mornin Gents......Vista....Interesting tid bit on May Day there.

I had planned to be at a local 5k this morning......it's a perfect 5k day. 45 degs, very slight breeze.....damn. So I'm here at the plant....this project got off to a rough start. My electricians and mill fitters aren't to happy to be here either.

8.43 miles this morning. Just simple, enjoyable, peaceful miles. Moon lit roads to start, the early dawn sunlight to finish. You know what I like best about running in the morning ? It means I can crack open a beer as soon as I get home from work !!!! But I have to admit, that post run beer taste pretty darn good too.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.  Lace up those shoes, dig out the potting soil, blow the dust off the bikes, fire up the grills, share the bottle of wine.....it's gonna be a beautiful week end !

        Run !

        MTA:

I just found out Three Dog Night is playing at a local venue !

        Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine
And he always had some mighty fine wine
        Singin'...

        Joy to the world
All the boys and girls now
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
        Joy to you and me

There.....try to get one to stop circling thru your head!

          Happy May Day!

Soccer games were cancelled this morning due to thunderstorms, so we are heading out to run some errands instead

This afternoon I'm taking the kids and the neighbor boy to Ringling Bros. Circus - The Greatest Show On Earth.  DH was supposed to go, but doesn't feel well.  I haven't been to the circus in years, and am really looking forward to it.

4 easy-paced miles on the TM, followed by core and upper body exercises.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Slo, do you ever wonder how some of these old bands can still get it together to sing the same songs that they were singing 30 years ago (or maybe 40 years for Three Dog Night)? But it certainly pays: Simon & Garfunkel sold out here recently (but was postponed due to Garfunkel having a voice problem).

I remember as a kid that we made something of a big deal about May Day in school, talking about Maypoles and all that, but it's a tradition that seems to have died out -- at least in the U.S.

More significant for us here in Michigan is that it's the first totally "smoke free" day under the new law that bans smoking in all public places (except for tobacco shops and the gaming floors of casinos (wonder what political contributions were responsible for that exemption)). A friend of ours is a non-smoker who plays in an Irish band in pubs around the area and he's been advocating for this for years since he knows musicians who have had problems from the second-hand smoke.

A day of rest for me, but here's hoping for some good (and smoke-free) runs for everyone this weekend.

"Think blue, count two, and look for a red shoe"

Happy May 1st everyone. It's also national running month, but I'm sure you all knew that.

Thanks for starting us out this morning, Joey. Nice of you to encourage a starting runner. Wish someone had done that for me.

Sorry you're stuck at work today, Slo. You got your run in, though. Like you said, you can go home and pop a cold one. Did you ever get to grill your ribeyes last night?

Holly, you must be having the storms that passed through here yesterday. Have fun at the circus today. Stay away from the clowns, though. I think clowns are kind of creepy.  When is your next race?

12.1 miles for me this morning, 9:56 pace. As good as I felt last week on a couple of shorter runs, I just felt carpy today. Note to self: don't eat black bean tortilla soup the night before a long run. Lead legs, bad stomach. First day in shorts, forgot the bodyglide and now have nice "rug burns" on both legs. I stopped for a bathroom break at a Super America, and my friendly clerk who is there every Saturday helped me cut the long sleeves off my running shirt. Plus, the wind is blowing about 30-35mph here this morning. Sorry, too much whining and sniveling for just one run. I'm fine now.  Off to plant some tomatoes, basil, peppers and other assorted goodies.

Lynne, I don't think I've ever gotten so uncomfortable on a run that I trashed one of my running shirts!

OMG.....I looked it up. Joy to the world was released in 1970.....40 years ago ! Some music and some bands just transcends time I guess.

Jlynne......It was Ribeye's cooked under the broiler. It just poured here last night, no let up.

no run today,  package pick up and maniac reunion in a few hours.

A few years ago I heard a radio interview of Chuck Negron.  the voice of "Jeremiah was a bull frog"  since the late 70's he was broke and living on the street as a heroin addict,  surviving on handouts.  early nineties he found god,  turned his life around and married an attorney and restarted his music gig.

10 miles this morning.  I didn't do it on purpose but I procrastinated long enough for the worst of the rain to be finished before I started.

At 10 miles and more I get bored.  I don't know how you maniacs and ultra runners do it.  What do you think about out there?

                      Tramps

And, of course, May Day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate Chicago's Haymarket massacre.  Enjoy the weekend; remember the martyrs who helped us get it.

Welcome back, Joey.  Any luck with the sci-fi novel?

Speaking of novels...I read Born to Run on the train as I was traveling this week.  A very fun, engaging read.  I'm not quite sure how much of it I believe.  It definitely has that "tall tale" feel to it and an anthropologist friend says his descriptions of the Tamahumara are "romantic" (his word).  I certainly wouldn't try to distill any training advice from it, but it's one of the more entertaining reads I've had lately.  Well worth a look if you haven't seen it.  Given the book's popularity, I suppose it's just a matter of time until there are tourist jaunts to run the mountains of northern Mexico.

Speaking of running mountains...8.7 miles on the hilly trails today.  Whew!  I got a late start so it was good and toasty out there.

                        Be safe. Be kind.

                        Trent

                        Good Bad & The Monkey

                          Mornin all!

22 miles in Maryland and DC with ymmv and amoresperros.  A pretty day!  Warm tho.

I just lost my entire post, it wasn't that long but I'm taking it as a sign to be brief!

Tramps - I see a movie deal from the book

Joey - great for your friend.  Make sure he takes walk breaks absolutely whenever he wants them.   I'd like to get just one person running, preferrably my DH.

Long weekend here with just me and the kids, if you don't hear from me by Monday, I've jumped off a bridge or run out of town.  They are just at that age where they fight constantly.  And I have very sensitive hearing.

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."

                            Maniac 505

                              enke,  hang in there!

Tramps,  after I read born to run I went to a talk by "Cabella Blanca" at a local running store.  VERY entertaining.  he made it sound like anyone would be welcome to join their now annual "races"  He said that the Turamahara no longer have running culture.  last year as I recall (the talk was over a year ago) he had something like 70 indians and 15 or so gringos running.  all the indians got at least 500 pounds of food.  the winner got something like $10.000.   He said he had no interest in the press showing up or the race turning commercial and he seemed sincere.  he said if it ever did look like it was turning into a media circus he would move the race somewhere else in the canyoon.

Many have tried to use the book for touting barefoot running since one of the characters runs barefoot.

I tend to use the book as an excuse to party and get drunk before races since two of the characters get falling down drunk the day before races.

Vista- Your post brought back memories. As a child I grew up in a rural area where the houses were quite far apart. My Mom would have us make flower baskets and take them to the neighbors, ring the doorbell and run away. Maybe this was how I became a runner!

5 mile trail run this morning. I am on a streak of 8 straight days running on various terrain and at various paces. It feels good to feel driven.
