Sunny Sunday Runs (Read 535 times)

Top 'O the World!

    My thermometer says it's only 25* F & windy = like 8-9* real feel....

Wow!! Great runs today! I had an interesting week and finished it off with an interesting run. Went out for 18 miles today. Left the house about 11:45 it was 70F with a strong 25-30 mph wind out of the south. At about mile 17, the wind changed instantly to 30-40 out of the North and the temp plummetted 20 degrees almost instantly. I finished up and made it to my truck just in time. A deluge (wasn't this spare ribs crossword answer a week or so back) came down with small hail....err, excuse me, I mean heck. Anyway a great run at 11:07 pace overall with the last 3 at 10:00 pace.

      One day at a time

VERY windy today, so I headed to the Y yet again to run on the treadmill. It was a recovery after my 7.5 mile run yesterday, so I did only 3.2 miles, slowly. I'm aiming for 27 or 28 miles this week. Have a great running week!
btb - Good luck on the training. Keep ever vigilant at this point and nip any injuries in the bud. You're doing great! MTA - you're the first person I've ever heard who used sitting in church as a race rehearsal. Cool No running for me today, but I did get on my bike and ride. It was 49F, sunny and everyone in the county was on the rail-trail walking, running or riding. A little over 9 miles. I changed tires on my mountain bike from 2.1" slicks to 1.5" slicks and saw a 2mph increase in speed. Shocked Shoulda done that a whole lot sooner. I still have a lot of riding to do to get my pace up to something reasonable, but I'm not doing to bad for the first ride of the year. Everyone out seemed to be having a great time and lots of smiles and waves were shared. <rant> If you are out on a bike/walk trail on a very busy sunday with the spouse and a couple of kids on their first bikes, good for you for getting the kids out for some exercise and spending time with the family. That being said, pick a side of the trail, either side, and leave room for the other 3,000 people out there trying to pass you. If this is little Susie's first bike, with training wheels and the cool pink & lavender streamers on the handlebars, make sure that she stays closer to the side of the trail and make sure that you don't all move to the side leaving her smack in the middle of the path all by herself to get rolled over by someone trying very hard to slow down and pass you and your little family. It's not fair to the other users and it's gotta be kinda scary for little Susie, doncha think? And another thing, I'm begging you: ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE WEARING HELMETS! I don't care if you wear a helmet. You're big enough to do the risk analysis and make the choice, but little Susie is asking for a serious head injury by being left in the middle of the path with no helmet while trying to dodge other cyclists. It's also good to teach little kids about the rules of the road and safety right from the start. Plus they sell kids' helmets in cool colors that kids really like!</rant> And the little girl with the cool pink bike, streamers, training wheels and pink daisy helmet? Cute as a bug. Sorry for the rant, but I'd hate to see a kid get hurt when it's so easy to avoid.
          Have you got a flag?
I am very impressed with those speedy long runs some of you folks did today. I won't name names, because I will be sure to forget someone. 20.16 miles, very slowly, on very hilly trails and neighbourhoods. I love hills as it gives me an excuse to be running an 11:00 plus pace. btb - I liked your rehearsal run. I too started my long run today feeling crappy and wondering if I could just cut it in half. But then it occurred to me things could feel just the same way on marathon day, and I will have to learn to push through it either way. I didn't take in anything but water till mile 10, which may have caused a bit of an energy slump from 10 to 15. I certainly hydrated enough, as I took 3 pee breaks. Since I'm not trying for any time goal, I think I will err on the side of good hydration. I had gooey, anonymous expresso love today. Wink I mean I found a pristine Gu on the trail, and could not find it's owner, so by mile 15 I decided to give it a try. It was alright. I also found a horse today to chase. He was going faster than a walk, but not a full gallop, so I kept him in my sights for half a mile till he and his rider turned down a different trail.

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."

I had an espresso love today, also! It was verry guud.

I'm going to sneak my RR in here....In spite of Spareribs warning, I went ahead and did a 10K today, after running 11.5 yesterday. It was a fairly flat course in Huntsville, but it was in the afternoon (2pm) and it was HOT! I am a morning only runner, and prefer it below 40 degrees. However, I slathered on the sun block and went.. The first thing I did was check out who was wearing earphones, as they are really getting ugly about those. Sadly, I've become addicted to my ipod and my running tunes and so decided, even though I only saw TWO others (who were teens) w/ the little ear pieces, that I would wear mine. About mile 4, I was hoping to get arrested for blatently defying the rules and get pulled, but no such luck. I finished in 1:03, which was ok for me, afternoon and all... But here's the dumb part. I was checking the results on the wall and noticed that they listed me in 3rd place in the 50 - 59 female age group. Being the overly honest, trustworthy, and not wanting to be embarrassed at the awards person that I am, I politely went up to the race director and said..."Excuse me, but I fear you've made a little mistake. You have me listed as 3rd and there is someone named Jamie who came in before me. You probably thought she was a guy, cause of her name." Yes, I really said this. W/out blinking an eye, the dear man said, "She is a master runner, and therefore wouldn't have been included in the age groups." He then went on to explain to me what that meant and I sheepishly walked off. I'll do a better job of looking at the reports next time Embarrassed

Did you guys see that? SR was able to run 6 miles. yeeeeepieeeeeeee. I am so glad to see him being able to start running again. It is good to see so many people with great long runs this weekend. WTG guys. The head cold is also holding me down this weekend, but the nice weather was calling my name, so out I went for a nice easy 6 miler. It sure feels good to be outside in a 55 degree sunny day. The nice weather has made the 120 bulbs of crocus I planted last fall to start blooming today...what a brave little flower they are, just barely snow free, but blooming already. Congrats fussyrunner on your great race today. Way to go with your 3rd place specially knowing that you ran over 11 miles the day before. Be proud of your self.

WTG, Fussyrunner! I was gonna tell you to do that race yesterday, after I heard SR's comments. Believe me, if you do your LR's slow enough, you can run moderately fast the next day. Awesome getting 3rd place!! Big grin So some 50+ was in the top 3 master's?

I had 15 on schedule for yesterday, but the rain brought out the wuss in me. So, since today was forecast for sunny and warm temps, I went for my long run after church this a.m. It was such a wonderfully warm day and being out in the sun felt superb, so I kicked in an extra mile for a total of 16 miles. Longest run ever for me. I only had a bowl of oatmeal at about 8 a.m., then had 3 fig newtons and half a balance bar before heading out on my run at 1 p.m. Wasn't sure how I would feel nutrition wise on a long run like this, but at mile 9 I had a gu and felt fine through my whole run. Came home and had my first ice bath too. We are on well water, so cold water is pretty darn cold, so I didn't add ice. This was hard enough- making myself sit in ice cold water. I endured it for 10 min and couldn't take it any longer. I hope that was long enough to have some benefit. Have a good rest of the weekend everyone!

Judging by the quantity of quality long runs today I'd say you guys are way over motivated. Big grin Today we had some of that beautiful early March weather, sunny skies and mid 40s by mid morning, peaking about mid 60s by mid afternoon. I only had 8 scheduled, but the longest since the race and being sick for a week, but I felt like having some fun in the process. I drove out to the AT in Damascus and did a warm-up walk and ran another half mile of warm up pace and started into the woods proper. I want to set this stretch as a sort of bench mark. About a 1000+ feet of climb over 1 mile and 5 furlongs, the last several hundred feet were off trail to the tip top. Total time 29:44. I found and old fire ring and decided to take a break and stack some more stone and turn it into a cairn proper. Loose stones are sparse. I sidle down to the AT and began to speculate on a path up next knob as I shuffle along. The under brush was somewhat dense and all looked about the same, so I decided just to "cut through the woods". In this case it was laurel, called mountain ivy in these parts. It wasn't bad nor was it too long before I hit a real trail. I thought it might be the old AT now called the Iron Mt trail, but there were no blazes. I guess it was just an old logging road. It ended at the peak. It was in good condition. I climbed to the top and built another marker, from scratch. Good cross-training. Smile Heading back down the old road I did pick up the Iron Moutain trail. Before long a connector that I've used in the past dropped me back down on the AT. This is a fun section of pretty decent trail with enough downgrade to pick up some speed. I nixed the usual Montrails in favor of a pair of Bite sandals today. I've been leary of them in the past, but had recently done a short walk and even an easy 7 mile run with no repercusions. Turns out they were great on the single track. Light but with enough support and flexibilty to give a solid but natural feel. The AT crosses the Beech Grove Gap trail which I take down to the Va Creeper trail. This section was 2.81 miles in 34:18 not counting cairn building. It's over 4.5 miles back to the car. But I'm feeling a bit whipped. Lose of conditioning I guess. I do 3 miles at M+1 and walk the rest of it in. I stand in the creek for about 10 mins to heal the leg meat a little and hit the road. It ended up about 8 miles mostly running (12:49 pace) and 2 miles of w/u - c/d walking. Oh yeah, I got 60 gallons of water. JJJ

I ran a 25K race this morning. I made it to the finish in 1:48:49 which is a 7:00 pace. I am pretty happy with that, although I had kind of hoped to break 7:00. You know how round numbers are. Tongue Good enough though for 11/47 in my AG. So not too shabby. My very occasional training partner a 22 year old women (who is also a former track star) beat me by 24 seconds. Rats! Wink She is a really good uphill runner and this course is nothing but up hill for the first 8 miles. I caught her at mile 11. Alas, she caught me back at mile 14.75 but as always she has a phenomenal kick and just left me in the dust as she finished the last mile it what had to be close to six minutes. Sigh. Perhaps next time!

All right, I give you this one! And you are a good lady to be honest with the RD. They often make mistakes and best to check it out early. But you be careful Monday and Tuesday, ya hear? And Mari, I did 6 total, 3 walking (sub-14 pace) and 3 at an easy jog (about 9:50 pace), so no fireworks yet, although you are sweet to mention it. In KS now. It's raining like crazy (yes, that was a crossword answer, a "deluge"). I had just checked into my hotel after driving 35 miles in my rental car. I asked at the desk where I should go for dinner. They sent me back out on the roads to a restaurant just this side of alpha centauri. Just back to the hotel after an indifferent meal. Where are those hot chicks with the RR's on that relay???? Spareribs
