Monday 7/18 - running or not / streaking or not (Read 35 times)

MM#209 / JapanJoyful#803

What’s your current or most recent and lifetime running streaks?
me: half way to breaking two seven day running streaks
accomplished in 1985 and two weeks ago.
    .
steve - sometimes when people step on my feet or a I stub a toe or something, I fondly recall the steel toes that protected my feet in those days when I needed them. Looking back on it all, maybe they’re the only ones I can say I really liked.
    .
For MikeE only (other DL’ers okay) - censored
I hope this isn’t you but I ran a little this morning
with a very tall walker guy about my age out for some exercise
    .
I asked, “are you a race walker?
walker, “no, I’m a trail runner.”
Me, who knows, at least by sight. most all the trail runners who have passed me by like wildchild’s rock on the side of the trail over the years, “oh, me too <<<(dreaming again)>>>, what’s you’re name?”
Walker, “oh, I’m not from around here.
.. . . I’m from New Mexico visiting my son”
Me: “how long have you been running?”
    Tall: “since 1965.”
Me: “huh? There weren’t any trail back then until the 90's.”
him: “oh, we’ve always had ‘em in New Mexico.”
Me: “uhm, why are you walking”
    him: “hamstring”
me: “can you feel it when you walk?”
Him: “not if I keep walking slow.”
Stifling the thought that it might have been an insult
as I tried to keep up, I continued finding out more:.
    1.  There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme-or-reason to them.
    2.  It’s the second time he’s had one.
    3.  The first one some ten years ago took <<<(bleep)>>> months to heal.):
    4.  He’s been nursing this one for <<<(bleep)>>> months.
    5.  hamstring feels like live wire getting electrocuted.
    6.  Does PT exercises strengthening surrounding muscles
    7.  hopes to be running again by <<<(bleep)>>>.
    .

      Thanks, tet...thanks a lot...

Tet - no, the pain is in my left knee, specifically the hamstring on the inside of the knee.  My (former) PT told me that weak hips contributed.

Have I mentioned that I will NEVER have PT again?  Next time I will just pay the copay for the office visit to the doctor, since doctors are so much cheaper than PTs who bill out at $1000/visit, and then I will Google exercises to do.

1 mile limping/running, plus 22 minutes on the bike trainer.

Greetings from western WV.  Annabelle (the 8 year old from Tallahassee) was here last week. Here is a recap:

          - I ran 4 miles on Monday & Wednesday. Didn't get out running any other day.

          - I worked most of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday but took off Tuesday and Thursday to have some time with the kid.

          - We saw "The Secret Life of Pets" and "Finding Dory"

          - We went swimming at the condo pool an average of twice a day.

          - Playing badminton indoors with a stuffed cat on Thursday, Annabelle took a direct shot in the left eye and wasn't happy.

          - Playing in the rain on Friday night, Annabelle took a hard fall on the concrete garage floor. We spent 4 hours at the emergency room to make sure her left arm wasn't broken.

And now she is up in Michigan visiting her other grandparents. I saw a video on Facebook of her driving a golf cart. Looks like there could be more injuries in her future.

Next week, she will be back here, and then we take her back to her parents in Florida. Totally spoiled but hopefully in one piece.

(Oh, I ran 4 this morning too.)

Holly, did you get an itemized statement showing what made up that $1,000 per visit? That's just crazy. There's no way that can be legitimate. Don't swear off all PT because it does a lot of good. But you need to find a provider in your insurance network, and ask up front about cost. Hope you're feeling better.

After yesterday's 4 miles, the foot was sore but not necessarily any more sore than it was before. I'm trying not to look at the pace bunny gaining on me in the rear view mirror. I had such a good lead on that rabbit! Drat. Oh well. I made an appointment with the foot doc for Wednesday. It's cold, windy and rainy here today. Just as well I was planning on a rest day anyway.

MTA: Dave! Spoiling the grandkids is required. ER visits are to be avoided! (sounds like you had fun though)

            Henrun

Tet- it's not my hip that's a problem. It's my R knee and I'm already scheduled for knee replacement. Meanwhile Marj and I attended Jay's race walking clinic as noted by Jay yesterday. I really loved it and had negligible pain, but, of course, I overdid it and I'm paying for it today with the return of much pain. Maybe, once I become a bionic man (with my new knee) I may turn to race walking instead of running.

I agree with Erika. Don't give up on all PT because this organization was not upfront about the costs. That goes for Tet regarding the colonoscopy, too. Find a way to get one! It could save your life. Colon cancer is very treatable if detected early. This public service announcement is brought to you by my friend, Rose. Her dad died of colon cancer.

My physical therapy clinic once negotiated with a patient in this manner. The patient could not afford his treatment. He needed treatment. He had a classic exercise machine, a sort of stair stepper/ recumbent bike combo. They traded. He donated the machine to the clinic and the clinic provided him the physical therapy he required. It was my favorite machine prior to surgery.

I enjoyed reading about Dave and his adventures with the grandchild. How fun!

I also enjoyed the racewalking clinic and photo!  And, of course, all of SteveP and Tag's photos. Excellent! And the birthday girls celebrated their day in style! Nice nice nice.

Here is how things went down for me:

                1. Friday. 0530. Pre-op. Then a little after 0700, rolled back to surgery.

                2. I was asleep during this part butt, Dr. 10th Grader performed the hip arthroscopy as per protocol. He found a bone spur which he "removed" (shaved off?) then he placed an anchor onto the acetabulum, repaired the labrum using sutures and anchored that to the acetabulum.  (This is my interpretation of what happened in there)

                3. Spent a few hours in recovery and then discharged out the door. It was a very long ride home due to the Friday traffic on 64 West.  Almost puked on the way home. Almost. Did not spew.

                4. Spent the rest of Friday on the couch. Visitors came and went. Rose and Mark brought over stromboli, salad, lasagne, and blueberry crumb cake. All homemade. We had food enough for the entire weekend. (Rose and Mark are our friends, Rose is the math specialist for whom I volunteer to help at the elementary school.)

                5. Saturday was spent mostly on the couch. I watched "When Harry Met Sally" and "Salmon Fishing in Yemen" and other diversionary videos.

                6. Sunday was pretty much a repeat of Saturday.

                7. Monday morning. Got up and read the paper and did the crossword. Then I drove through the post office to sent my thank you notes. Then I went to PT.

                8. At PT, they evaluated my ranges of motion. I rode the stationary bike for 7 minutes. My friend PT asked if I would let her PT in training do my evaluation, I said, "Sure!".  (Anything for science). He was attentive. He also told me I needed to be using one crutch. (I was not using any) He told me that by not using the device, I was promoting limping and he didn't want to have to retrain my gait. He showed me how to use one crutch to simulate normal gait. So.

                9. After PT, I went to Wawa for a cup of coffee and some Tastycake crumb cakes. And then to Farm Fresh for prunes and Fiber One bars. No explanation needed.

                10. And now. It is Monday afternoon. I am binge watching "Better Off Ted" on Netflix. I have seen the whole series before but I like it.

Starr, you are so pretty!  Love the picture of you with your flowers. Hope things improve for your family.

Hi, All - I'm on borrowed time, so this'll have to be fast, but wanted to drop in and say howdy.  Not sure if I'll get back in here this week.  Tomorrow I head to Portland for 8 days, and this coming weekend I have my 24 hr run.  I'm trying to not be nervous, but . . . .

My goal is 70-75 miles, so keep prayer, send good vibes, keep your fingers crossed - I'll need it all.

Yesterday I woke up totally pooped, so I forwent my run and for the first time in months, I sat on the couch in my PJs with a cup of coffee and just lazied my way into the morning.  It was so nice!

Okay, everyone.  Be good.  And if you can't be good, at least don't get caught!

Holly, did you get an itemized statement showing what made up that $1,000 per visit? That's just crazy. There's no way that can be legitimate. Don't swear off all PT because it does a lot of good. But you need to find a provider in your insurance network, and ask up front about cost.

Erika - I have ordered an itemized statement, which they must mail, so I will get it in a couple days.  I had the most infuriating conversation with the billing person today, as I asked if there was an appeal process.  "You can write a letter, but really, you just owe it."  I wish I could smack her with a running shoe.  And this WAS in my network.  Just apparently not a doctor's office, but rather a PT center.  My fault, of course, for not getting enough clarification.  I will fight it, and make noise, and write strongly worded letters, maybe even have them come from my attorney (boss), but ultimately I have no faith in diminishing the insane amount.  Therefore, I will send them $20/month forever, and make them keep paying postage to mail me bills.

Rose - sounds like everything went well, but please, rest and be gentle with yourself as you recover.

                    Leslie - you will rock!!!

DD had her annual physical today, which had a scary aspect.  She has been having episodes with 3-5 seconds of her vision going completely black - not dizzy or passing out but just blackness.  The Doc diagnosed it as postural orthostatic tachycardia, which means that when she goes from lying down to standing up, her HR increases more than 30 beats, which within the next 30 seconds causes these blackouts.  Likely not serious (maybe caused by dehydration, poor eating, going from very busy to inactive i.e. summer break), but since her EKG showed a slight abnormality, we are heading to the heart doctor for a checkup.  THESE kind of tests I will happily pay for.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Tet - nice recap (even if it wasn't all accurate)

Holly - I agree with Erika - I really the treatment I get at my PT and even tho she is out of network for me, my co-pay is $40. Still think something is wrong with those charges you were billed.

                      RCG - recover well!!

32 minute swim (1232 yards) and 2.5 mile run for me today then more MOG dress shopping -- I am NOT a dress shopper!!

                      TammyinGP

Holly - so if someone didn't have insurance and chose to pay-out-pocket for PT sessions, they would be charging that uninsured person $1000 per session? I doubt that. As others have stated, that physical therapy billing and the nightmare it has become is probably the most asinine thing I've ever heard of in the medical realm.

off to watch david play tennis. I forgot to pack my running stuff like I usually do, so guess I'm just watching today, which is good too. He starts working with his coach Wednesday mornings . Got him registered for drivers training today, which starts on 8/8. Guess he better get his license now that he has a car (we bought him a car this weekend). and I have a feeling now he's actually looking forward to school starting in the fall since he'll get to drive to school.

                        Tammy

Hello and happy Monday everyone. I've been absent for a while. Lots of stuff going on...

Holly, that really stinks. And what kind of people do the insurance company have working for them that she would make a remark like that?! Fight it! And scary stuff with your DD. I hope everything turns out ok. I saw your post on FB. I can't believe how old your DS is! You must have been a child bride

Congrats on David's new car Tammy. Don't ask me about some of the driving experiences with my two sons. I don't want to scare you!

Aww Starr - gosh I hope things get better for you. And Lon! I hope things work out for your DD. You could use a little less stress.

Safe travels Leslie and good luck!

Dave - your posts always give me a good laugh. Good job on grandpa duties. Glad Annabelle ended up with no broken bones.

Hey Tet! Nice running streak you got going there.

Well, I hate to pile on with all of the other bad news here lately but I'm looking for some advice from all of the legal folks that hang around here. DS#2 is my problem child. Long story short, he purchased a house about two years ago when he got engaged to a young lady with a child from another relationship. She was only 20 at the time (he's 27) and I was worried about how long this would last. Well, they broke up and she moved out. He depended on her income to help with the bills and struggled keeping everything paid after she left. The house went into foreclosure. He's been living there a year and not making any house payments. What he's been doing with all of his money is something he chooses to not share. My ex (his dad) thinks he has a gambling problem. I know it's not drugs or alcohol, but he does spend money stupidly. We bailed him out when they shut off his utilities and his car was repossessed. DH says "no more," and rightfully so. My son called me tonight and told me that there was a sticker on the front door stating the house was being declared vacant and could be winterized, which is something they do here due to the cold Wisconsin winters. There was a number to call, but it was one from the Eastern time zone and he got an automated message. He got an apartment and can move in August 1. His job is sending him to Kentucky for training next week. I'm worried if he doesn't get all of his stuff out this week, it may be too late when he returns from Kentucky. Does anyone know the time process for this once that sticker gets put on the door? Can they change the locks and take all of his belongings if he doesn't get them out? I want to strangle him for not doing anything about this sooner. He knew this would eventually happen. That kid is going to give me a heart attack! Any advice you could give me would be appreciated...

                          MM#209 / JapanJoyful#803

Jeanne - I haven’t read it (and don’t intend to) but the U.S. Supreme Court just ruled on various invalidities of “stickering” houses. Check the internet for gratis legal clinics in your area or go to the courthouse with the facts of his case and ask if what they did is legal. I kind of doubt it. If the stickering is illegal, a letter from an attorney or your son’s letter with “cc attorney” at the bottom should nip it in the bud. If not, maybe he’ll have a lawsuit for damages against them.
note: "cc" doesn’t actually have to be sent it to an attorney but, if need be, I think I can get amy’s address for you or just send it to me, . . . even though I don’t think I’ll be reading it.
                            .
Fortunately, it sounds like it may not matter if he has an apartment from August 1.

Maybe go help him move his stuff ASAP to your garage or a storage unit and not worry about it.
                            .
If DS asks for more parental funding and you agree to help anyway, maybe tell him that you’ll be glad to help cover any certain specific outstanding/pending bills with your payments directly to the creditor but that you’re worried about his financial circumstances so that any personal help will need to be deposited to a joint bank account with you so you can help him get things straightened out, i.e., monitor/control or whatever every penny.
                            .
If you agree to the additional help and he says how he spends it is his business and accuses you of not trusting him, you can avoid him getting angry with you by saying you’re sorry and really want to help but one of your lawyer friends who’s worried about you insists that you get an accounting from now on to make sure you are helping instead of inadvertently contributing to make the problem worse.

                            .

Otherwise, it might be time for him to be getting ready to be on his own.

                            .
                            Good luck.
                            .
