Monday Cold and Snowy Runs (Read 378 times)

Good morning good people. Our computer had some "issues" over the weekend. Lots of catching up to do on everyone's running/posting the last few days.

Up at 4:30 to find 22° temps, snow and wind. I was really tempted to crawl back in bed, but the weather forecast for the rest of the week only looks worse. So, out for 5.5 miles at a 9:47 pace. A few slippery spots made running in the dark a little tricky today. I did a 12 miler yesterday that went pretty well.

Breger- sorry about your Gators. That was a tough loss. Even my old buddy Brett Favre didn't win yesterday.

I got to watch Will on Saturday while his parents went shopping. I want to have his picture taken with Santa, but the kids are still a little nervous about taking him to malls or other places where he'd be exposed to germs and oter nasty things. I guess I'll have to rent a Santa suit for my DH.

    Have a good Monday everyone.

Thanks Jlynne.  The Gators game was disappointing, but that's okay.  They've had a nice long run.  They'll bounce back nicely for the Sugar Bowl.  It turned out to be a Good thing that we had the Christmas Pageant to go to and could only watch the 1st half.

Erika, that stinks.  Be very careful please.  That one sounds like a nasty, painful one (SF perhaps?).

Yesterday was a whirlwind of Choir singing and carrying speakers and amps.  Finally got home about 4:30 PM after a non-stop day.  The Brewskis were quite welcome.  I may be able to get a high-def DVD of our Mall performance but I'll have to figure out how to extract out pieces of it for y'all.

The highlight of the concert had to be the 5th grader from our Church School (10 years old).  She has been given a gift from God with her Operatic 1st Soprano voice.  She's already hitting notes 2 or 3 steps higher than the professionals feel comfortable trying.

6 miles this morning at an easy, sometimes-moderate pace.  Garmin needs charging so it was all untimed.

        Morning, gang!

Jlynne - good job of getting out in less than optimal weather!!  We definitely want to see  a picture of Will with Santa/DH.  I was also sorry to see Florida lose.  I hadn't heard that  Favre's team lost - rats.  The Saints managed to pull another one out - nice overtime win for them.

Bill - would love to hear the 10 year old sing.

The whirlwind trip to New York was fun.  We got to see the beautiful tree in Rockefeller Center before it started raining.  White Christmas was good though I think I prefer Bing's version.  It was snowing/sleeting heavily by the time we exited the theater and headed for Grand Central Station.  I'd like to have a full day to explore the Station.  So much to see and so little time.  We had 2 to 3 inches of snow at home, and it was windy, so DH opted to hop on his stationary bike Sunday morning.  I did 17 slow miles on the treadmill.

Our snow didn't melt yesterday, and I thought I'd be running on snow and ice covered roads this morning, but it didn't look like Groton got any snow at all.  I ran 7.1 hilly miles @10:15 and 152AHR.  Temp was 30, but there was absolutely no wind, so it was gorgeous.

        Good runs all!

Erika, my dear sisitahh, I feel you pain about your foot. darn it...will you go to see your doc for this, it could be a SF like BQByll said. Butterfly hugs to you sweetie.

SueT, I was looking forward to readying your NYC report. On my second trip to NYC I saw the "famous Xtmas tree" at the Rockefeller Center still in its crate, I got a picture of it somewhere. I would love to see a picture of it all decorated.

Great 17 miles on the treadmill and another 7 this morning...great running there girl.

No running yet, I was up early so I could finish up my presentation for later this week. I am glad I don't have to go out this early morning since it is 8F out there. I really need to do some quality running today, after last night's dinner part.y I probably gain 5 pounds or so. German dinner last night was fantastic. My friend is a very good cook, it was great to be spoiled with all the fine cooking.

I am still trying to decide if I should put up a Christmas tree or not. It will be just my DH and I at home for the holidays. Since the tree is not really part of my Christmas tradition back home and DH really doesn't care to have one,  I am contemplating to not go thru all the work. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Here is to a great Monday to all.

            Hi everyone!

Things have been pretty shaky on the home frontand last week was just really bad for me, but I think, I really think that we are on the upswing now.   Then yesterday I spent the day in the emergency room with my mom - so things are crazy and I haven't run at all!

I did post several bottles for sale on my website today and I have many more if anyone is interested.

Please vote today too - it is the last day and we are falling way behind.  Sad

Mary, how is your mom now?  I'm sorry things are so rough for you.

Beautiful morning for a run here - partly cloudy, 26 degrees, very light wind.  My RP and I ran on the path around Back Cove in Portland - awesome!  We saw a local coach on our run, and he remembered our names!  I'm always impressed when people can do that, because I stink at it.

I made it 5.6 easy miles, non-stop.  Felt great!  I feel like I'm back in the game again.

              Have a great week!

Been away for a bit......Erika, take care and let us know what that lump is all about when you know.

I have a ? for Bil or Eliz. or anyone who might know.  D. and I went to concert recently and got to talking about what it would be ilke to have musically gifted child.  Then we started wondering when a parent notices their child is truly talented--do you walk by the bathroom and hear them belting out a song or does it talk a teacher or chorus director to call it to your attention?

for the Gators and for the VIkings and the Patriots............and for the Redskins, who almost got the Saints (but I'm still happy for N.O.)

                Thinking of you, Mary.

It's cold here, but we're into double digits now, and it should improve by the end of the week.  We had to get out Frank's coat and neck warmer.    He looks chic--someone stopped their car in the middle of our boulevard yesterday to ask where we got his coat.  She said she has a Lab/Greyhound mix.

.................................what do you do with that dog, I'm wondering?  Greyhounds are sighthounds, and shouldn't ever be taken outside of a fenced area without a leash.  I once had a Lab/Border collie mix that only wanted to chase balls I threw him as long as my arm held, and then on beyond that.  Sounds a little schizy to me

                grins,

Karin, when is the Hot Chocolate Run, or did it happen already?

                  Amy,

That's a very interesting question.  Never having had a child who possessed much musical talent (and not having much myself), I'm not sure I know the answer directly.  But I suspect it is like identifying any child's interests and talents - whether it be academics, sports, running, whatever.  Give them opportunities to see what's out there and just watch what they gravitate too.  And once you see some interest/talent, get a Coach, Tutor, or Music Instructor to bring it out and develop the talents/skills as much as possible.

Our Music Director can only be considered a Musical Talent.  From what he has told me, his parents very much discouraged his Musical abilities - thinking that it was nearly impossible to make it in Music.  But he could not and would not deny his Love for Music.  Eventually his Father came around but it was long after he became Gifted and skilled on his own.

Re musical ability - my daughter is 11 and doing very well in her middle school jazz band.  She is very fortunate that her BFF is also a pianist.  They both started taking lessons in kindergarten.  At first, I didn't think DD would go very far in music, because it took her SO LONG to learn notes!  She just couldn't seem to get it.  But almost from the very beginning, she would sit down at the piano and make up her own pieces.  Her friend did the same, and pretty soon, they were making up duets together! Now they are both in the jazz band, learning to play together in an ensemble and improvise really well.  The director told me they are the strongest 6th grade pianists he's seen in years.  One thing that did stand out from an early age - she LOVED to practice.  She will practice every day without being told, most times.

For Mother's Day, she likes to surprise me by writing a short piece for me!  Makes my heart melt.  I should add that her dad and I played very seriously when we were young, and both almost majored in music before we decided engineering might be more practical for us!

                      hi everyone.

a quick post for now,.... want to see if this works.  it's a little big.  sorry!

oh... thank you Jeanne for starting!

                      (((((((( Mary ))))))))

Brag, Brag.  Econo will kill me for telling, but I have to tell that she has perfect pitch, and we knew that was so long before she could talk.    Also, she ran the Macau Marathon on Sunday, and did well, but I have yet to see a Race Report!    Come on, Econo.

Very cold here, so the treadmill is calling to me.

Mariposai - I believe I can grant your wish to see the tree in all it's glory.  That's if I can remember to download the images from my camera this evening ;-).   I know how I would vote on your Christmas tree decision ;-).

{{{{{{{{{Mary}}}}}}}} - hope your Mom is OK.  Also hope your boss stays home until he/she is well beyond the infectious stage.

Amy - thanks for reminder about the Patriots - what the heck happened with them????

I had a dear friend in grade school with the voice of an angel.  I clearly remember her doing a solo for the school Christmas program when we were 6 or 7 years old.  I also clearly remember my Mom chewing her Dad out for not attending the Christmas program to hear his daughter sing.  He was totally clueless.

dg - great cartoon - thanks for sharing!!

a little more of a reply this time.

                            I miss our morning Beers.

Jeanne, you really are tough strong runner.  Very nice run today, esp. after a 12 miler yesterday!    Very cool you got to Will sit.  Smile

Bill it would be great if you could extract some pieces for us!

Sue, 17 miles on a TM?   How did you do that???      I'm glad you had fun on your trip... too bad you didn't have more time.   Glad you liked the comic. :-).   It was sent to me, & it made me laugh.  would have been better if I could have found it online to post, but nope.   I liked esp. the guy that said "Wow!  I want to try that".

Nancy, you deserve to be spoiled. And the way you fly around..  should be no problem.   Good luck with your presentation.   Maybe you & your DH could come up with some new tradition that isn't quite as much work.

                            another hug for Mary.

Yay Teresa!   That is wonderful your DD is doing those things.

Aamos, a long time ago I had a beautiful smart German Shepherd, got him at the shelter.    We would go hiking, but I would delay as long as I could throwing a stick for him, because after that he was completely schizy.   It is all he'd want.   would go backwards down the trail, facing me, wagging his tail, waiting for me to throw it again.   Once it got stuck in a tree & the poor thing must have jumped for 3 years trying to reach it.  (more or less.)

                            Woods lady... I'm not surprised!

well, when I was 3 I figured out songs on the piano (so I am told)...  mentioning this in the context of how best to encourage kids.  My parents had a piano teacher come by when I was 4 or 5, but I just wanted to go outside & play & she decided I was too young.  I ended up taking lessons, but hated & was traumatized by recitals, used to get sick.   At any rate, I stopped by early junior high, have messed with it a couple of times since but haven't played at all for years. part of that is circumstances... the piano needs a major repair, (a piano tuner broke it!),  & I need padded rooms to play in.  So, no skill or gift here, but I wonder sometimes if something had been handled differently if maybe at least I could play reasonably well.   Maybe it was just me, too.

                            Mr. Chip & Mizz Rizzo

                              thanks everyone.....

my mom is doing okay.   she had a continual bloody nose that started Saturday a.m. and I called the dr. and got permission to stop her plavix (blood thiner)   Sunday morning she was still having heavy nose bleeds and started coughing up blood clots.    She thought for sure this was the beginning of the end (age 93) and was scared.   I have to admit, I was pretty scared too but but up a good front.   After a trip to the ER she had to have the nostril packed - which is pretty painful and that has to stay in for 3 days and we go to the ENT specialist Wednesday a.m.   So, once we were sent home and just start to relax a little, she gets another nose bleed and long story short it got so bad we had to go BACK to the ER.   they put more air (more presure) into the nose pack and sent us home again after observing for what seemed like forever.   Poor thing.   she is very tired.

This morning I had the best of intentions, but just didn’t get to my workout.  Instead, I slept in an extra half-hour and then finished putting my winter sweaters out and packing away my summer clothes before leaving early for a dentist appointment.  The crown that came out and had to be re-cemented a couple months ago came loose again, and today had to have a new post put in and a new crown made.  I went through this exact same thing with a different tooth in October.  I’m glad my DH loves me in spite of my dental bills.

Sadly, I will miss DD's Christmas concert at school tonight, due to tax training, but DH will take her and she has promised to do the whole rendition of songs in a private concert for me at home another time...

Kind of crazy busy at work today, so off I run.....
