Guess I can start things today. As Tramps said previously no recaps here. That's Jay's area and I ain't infringing on that.

Bought a spin bike for the basement (Walmart $120) so kiddo and I can cross train. Set up last night and rode this morning while watching the Tour de France. I felt like a real racer. Club run later tonight and our local 5k XC race. Busy day so I better get back to work so I don't feel guilty about not working this evening.

Cheers and make it a super day.

Here's a pic of Cody. We really miss him.

    Tramps

Good morning.  Thanks for starting things off, Norm.

I had a big appointment with my sports doc yesterday to review MRI results and talk options. Basically, I’m told:

      1. The two meniscus tears are a degenerative condition that won’t get better.
      2. Any running—even with PT—will only accelerate degeneration and likely produce other problems. I’m already getting IT irritation likely caused by improper compensation for the tears.
      3. If my goal is to slow pace of degeneration and retain long-term mobility, I should stop running altogether + PT to improve strength/function and reduce symptoms. (Cycling is good aerobic alternative because your knee works more like a piston in a single plane, rather than rotating with a twist as occurs in running. It’s that shear that causes the meniscus problems.)
      4. If my goal is to return to running, surgery will almost certainly be needed to “trim” tear areas. (The analogy was to remove pebbles from a shoe to produce a smooth—if now diminished—surface again.) However, surgery is typically last resort (after period of PT) and prospects for positive results are modest at best and vary by the nature of the tears. And a diminished meniscus is subject to faster degeneration, so the fix can just be temporary.

      Lots to think about.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be meeting with a knee specialist, to ask more detailed questions, as well as starting PT. Running is shelved indefinitely…maybe permanently. For now, I guess I’m a cyclist….which will take some getting used to.

Another 20 miles today, at a somewhat steadier, faster pace.

And no, my butt is okay.  Maybe it’s the bike? (Chosen for comfort.) The fit? The fancy pants? I don’t know.

The bike’s a black and red base-model Specialized Roubaix (20% off right now with manufacturer’s promotion!), like this:

(Honestly, these all look the same to me but...)

It doesn’t have a name yet but it does have a theme song, which doubles as a tribute to my Canadian heritage.  Like I always say:

“Hornswoop me bungo pony, dogsled on ice
Make a dash for freedom baby don't skate on polar ice.”

      Be safe. Be kind.

Butterfly hugs to Tramps. The thoughtof you not running again makes me sad.

It is a good thing this forum is not only about running,  but it is about life, so we will now track your biking adventures too. Nice theme music!

Tramps- I'm so sorry, but I'm not giving up on your return to running.  Hugs....

3.1 miles this morning.  Humidity is back, but I won't whine.

Me, too.  But TW beat me to the Spandex joke.

and exactly the same for me this morning.  Well, not EXACTLY the same, as I WILL whine about the humidity.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

Tramps - oh no!  I hope that doesn't mean you will leave us!

Super busy trying to get ready to leave tomorrow for 4 days at Norris Lake in Tennessee with DH and 3 other couples.  We have rented a house on the lake and a pontoon boat, so it should be a good weekend.  However, any time away from work creates panic for me, so I am trying to get the most time-sensitive stuff done before I go.

6.1 miles for me this morning in 72 degrees.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Sorry to hear that prognosis Tramps. If/when I am at that point where running isn't a favorable option for me though, I wouldn't mind being a biker again. I did a lot of biking when I lived up in Seattle and enjoyed it. Of course, Seattle was much more biker friendly than where I live now, but still do-able. or hiking. Lots of amazing places to go hiking too.

Will try and get in a run this evening when it cools off to mid 80's, like I did on Monday. tough to get in a quality run during the work week when it's this warm and I really only have the evenings to do it. I have a follow-up dental appt at 4:30 today for this temporary crown. The tooth is still bothering me and I can bite down on that side of my mouth. I am pretty positive it's root canal time. I think the crack in my tooth is too deep. I've never had a root canal so not sure what to expect - - other than a big bill.

Tramps - Real sorry to here the news.  I would be stuck if I couldn't run. I don't like bicycles much at all and I've been running since 1973. It's all I like.  Although I don't train as hard as the rest of you "nuts" around here.  Once high school cross country was over (in 1977) I have only been a recreational plodder.

This morning was 5.08 miles in the humidity.  I wear a "Road ID" wrist band when I run but I couldn't find it today.  I think one of the cats ran off with it. but I could have misplaced it in a moment of senioritis,  I am getting old, I'm overweight, and my diet is crapola.  I wear the ID so when I inevitably keel over on a run, my wife can be notified so she can collect the life insurance. I don't want her to have to wait on that.

Tramps - I hope your second opinion from the knee specialist is more optimistic.  My knee doc said I could run or bike and to listen to my body - I wasn't going to make it any worse and if it hurt, don't run as much.  Several folks, including Henrun, in our NE 65+ Running club, are running post knee replacement.  The docs say the replacement may only last 15 years instead of 25.  meanwhile happy biking!

And 5 miles in the wilting HHH this morning

Tramps, sorry about the diagnosis. Biking isn't so bad, but unless you start climbing Alps it isn't anywhere near the same workout.

Cody was a very pretty dog, Norm. He looks happy in that picture, well, as happy as a sheltie in an elf costume can look.

Tammy, I had a root canal done on a crowned tooth when it got sensitive to heat. That was the sure sign of a dying tooth, apparently. That's also the same tooth that had bone loss around the root years later and I got it replaced with an implant. That stupid tooth cost me many thousands of $$ over the years between crown, root canal, extraction and implant. Good grief. And I've had this discussion with my dentist several times. I have several crowns from cracked teeth from bruxism (grinding and clenching my teeth while sleeping). Back in the mid-80's, he prescribed a night guard to protect my teeth from the eventual cracking that ruined so many of them. The insurance I had at the time said nope, that's cosmetic. Really? Nowadays, I believe a nightguard is seen as a protective preventive tool to preserve teeth and save thousands on later crowns. It's also a case of "if I knew then what I know now," I would've found a way to pay for the damn thing out of pocket over 30 years ago. Just think of the grief and money that would've saved.

Tramps, if you ask Perchcreek, cartilage is over-rated. He's been running daily an insane number of years on broken down knees and is going strong. I hope you can figure something out and return to some sort of running. I'm with Mariposai in that the thought of you not running again makes me sad. Don't know why as it has nothing to do with me, but still...

We have some smoke hanging around from wildfires northeast of us. We've had a very low fire season so far (which means too much rain!) but the northeast part of the state is apparently pretty dry. It's just light, and mainly makes the sunlight look oddly pink, but it's annoying anyway. Plan today is my 10+ mile trail run after work.

Tramps, I'm really sorry to hear that! You have been one of our running stalwarts over the years. On the other hand, welcome to the club of runners-turned-cyclists. I'm connected to a few other former RAers through Strava (MarkGuy, Michael Steed, Barb Kessel, Mustang Sally, DaveinAA). Come join us some time, but only if you're wearing spandex! On the medical side, I know some runners of my advanced age (70+) who have gone the knee replacement route, but so far it has only been about a 50% ratio for good outcomes as far as a return to running is concerned. Hopefully you can avoid that solution! And by the way, the Roubaix is a very good choice. Also nice to go with the entry level model to give yourself room for a later, expensive upgrade.

Erika, our trip is not firmed up yet due to negotiating about a cabin upgrade, but if it comes off it will be starting in a town in the interior named "Fairbanks" where, among other things, we visit the Museum of the North on some local college campus. Ever heard of it? And by the way, it turns out that it would be closer for us to fly from here to Europe compared to Fairbanks! I don't know how you manage to do so much traveling.

Another swampy day here today, but with heavy rain and flooding, so I settled for mall walking with my DW and a few friends. So that turned into a combined mall walk followed by a shopping session at a couple of the outlet stores.

"Think blue, count two, and look for a red shoe"

Tramps lousy diagnosis that. However, I would not take it as the last word. My experience with most doctors and athletes has not been particularly inspiring. When it comes to athletes a lot of doctors do not know what they are talking about. Sort of to be expected given the ratio of couch potatoes to athletes. For knees, the situation appears to be particularly bad. If you have access to a university library I would start reading up on the latest research regarding your condition. Do not trust your doctor to know it. Also, do not trust your doctor to skew what he might know in a way that favors his expertise. (For anyone thinking I am knocking doctors here, I am not. Doctors are human not mythical saintly creatures. Doctors have the same failings when it comes to figuring out what is going on and what to do that we all have.) Too many people that I know have been told you will never do X again and then have.

My run today was brutal! I am not sure what happened but I totally wilted. It may have been the slowest 15 mile run of my life at a 10:57 pace. I even stopped twice for water and once for a quick head shower at one of the beaches I stopped at for water. Still ended up walking a lot. Something happened last year to my body or fitness last year that has made me more sensitive to the dew point. I used to shrug off even 70° dew points (think swamp). Now, it does me in.
