My condolences too to Karin over Super Granny’s passing. She and Karin seemed to have such a joyful, wonderful relationship. Such good women.

Tammy, have fun on your trip to Cottage Grove, and good luck in Saturday’s half.

Have a greta trip to ‘Knockville,’ Tomwhite.

Sounds like a good time with your DB at the gym yesterday, Evanflein - you two covered a lot of talk territory!

Bummer about the busted leg, Hemerocallis. I hope you get some positive news from the ortho today.

I’ll look for you at the bathrooms at my next race, Fatozzig…

I’m fortunate enough (good jeans - LL Bean ) to not be on any meds, and have BP that is still within acceptable norms for a ‘guy of a certain age.’ I don’t buy into the concept that someone should take meds because of their age without there being other very compelling reasons. And I’d always look for alternatives and/or a second opinion if my doc wanted to put me on meds for any reason.

DW left early yesterday morning for Charlotte until Sunday, so I have 4 days without women (unless you count our cat and the 4 women at the office). I had a 3.5 hour workshop yesterday afternoon where I actually picked up some useful information. Imagine that.

Is this going to be the year we have a meet-up at the Seacoast Half Marathon (Portsmouth, NH, Nov. 12)? We opened registration on Monday (http://seacoasthalfmarathon.com/).

Perhaps because DW wasn't here, I woke up earlier than usual this morning, and was out the door for my workout by about 3:40. I went 9.1 RW miles at a easy-moderate pace in 30F temps, and under overcast skies. Then I went to breakfast at our favorite dive because they are closing for 10 days, starting tomorrow, for a well-deserved vacation.

    Have a greta Friday!

Just an update.  When I called my cardiologist's office to ask for a referral to a vascular specialist, the nurse was sort of surprised because the practice does all vascular work. I didn't know this.  So I left a message for my cardiologist that the pain is not caused by the meds.  Soon after I got an email from the nurse who said he wants me to make an appt. to come in for a  lower extremity arterial doppler study, a form of ultrasound that looks at how blood is going through the leg arteries.  That ought to get us somewhere. Tramps, say thanks to your wife.  Spareribs

Stayed inside on the treadmill since it was windy and gloomy outside.  3.3 before work miles done!

Out there running since dinosaurs roamed the earth

I'm sad about Super Granny also. I never met Karin but if I were to rank Facebook posts, she would be at the top of the list of quality stuff.  My wife's grandmother lived to 102 and kept her spunk almost the whole time. She was in an assisted living place and joked that only 2 of them there knew what was going on around them.

I ran an easy 3 this morning. 38°, drizzly, and windy.  Unless prevented by rain, my next run should be on Monday down in Tallahassee.  This will be the third year in a row that we went down to see and help with the grandkids during their spring break. We stay in a cottage on the edge of a golf course.  It is always been a nice trip.

There is so much misinformation out on the web about statins that it is impossible for me to tell the real from the fake stories. So I do what the doctor recommends.  He wanted me to get my cholesterol down and especially wanted my LDL under 100.  I take 20mg of atovrastatin each day.  I started that 7-8 months ago and my lab work a month ago showed that my LDL went from 125 to 87 and the total cholesterol went from 215 to 162. My doctor is happy about that so we'll keep doing that for now.  There is enough risk in the world so there is no reason to die early from something preventable.

Jay--with that title, I have Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry" in my head now.

            Dave--good cartoon.

Sad to hear of Super Granny's passing.  I miss Karin around here, too.  Good genes in that family.

Nice to hear from Hemerocallis.  Wish it was better news.

Ribs--Will do.  Hope you get this cleared up.

Did I ever mention that Tribee once went to a conference in Pittsburgh and the guy at the bar that started hitting on her a conversation turned out to be Spareribs?  Small world.

With all that talk yesterday, I'm reminded that I never got an annual physical last year.  Oops.  My BP is always very good but my cholesterol is always borderline (~110-120 LDL), regardless of my good eating habits.  Doc hasn't recommended meds yet, though.  I think there's a lot of gray area with this and I always lean towards avoiding meds if possible.

Twocat would have been proud.  I waited a bit until the rain passed before I went out to do an EZ 6 miles.

The cold front that's coming through today will mean tomorrow's DC RnR marathon (which I'm not running) should start out in the 20s.  Nice.

            Have a good weekend

            Be safe. Be kind.

Today I actually ran with hubby. He slowed down and I sped up (this is a big deal for slowpoke me) and it was actually an enjoyable 5k run without either of us getting annoyed with the other's pace. lol. We do everything together but running together is different because of our pace discrepancy. But today was good. Very good.

Thanks for keeping us updated, Ribs.  Not only are we worried about each others' health around here, but there's almost always something to learn.

Jay - Enjoy your sorta womanless time.  And that Ribs, he does get around, doesn't he?

                Loved the comic, Dave.

I've pretty much been awake since 2:00, so I finally dragged my butt outta bed around 5:30 for 30 min of core/upper ST.

I get my sit/stand desk Monday!  Yay!!

                        Rant On:

My FIL - Hub's stepdad - fell  a little over a month ago and broke his hip, refused to go to rehab.  He's been on the decline for quite a while as he has been an alcohol for years and years and years, his liver is shot, he has a bad ticker - quite frankly, we are all surprised he has survived this long since my MIL passed about 2 years ago.

Anyway, when he fell and broke his hip . . . my SIL let us know via message on FB.

Any medical update, I usually get via message as opposed to her calling her brother.  And now yesterday I get a message that FIL is just days away from passing.

We have told my SIL that The Hub does not FB, he does not text, please call him when there's important things he needs to know, yet she continues to persist with the messaging.  It's not my place to confront her on this, but I tell ya, it's even getting me PO'd.  I just think it's rude and very hurtful.

                        Okay.  I've said my piece.

Reminds me of my el-macho high school ski team mate who was relegated to gatekeeper duties down near the finish after a broken shoulder during a training run from a high speed collusion with a recreationalist who skied out onto the otherwise closed course of a pending downhill competition.  When an out-of-control racer careened of course at his gate during the race and upended him so he came right down on the broken shoulder and we all started up the slope en mass to offer assistance, he gets up and waves us off, "I'm fine, doesn't hurt at all!"  Needless to say, he spent the night in the hospital getting ready for surgery the following day.

                          .

Kind of like makes me jealous of Hemerocallis' lifetime

of being able to tell the trail tale of a broken leg when

others complain of mere face plants, scraped knees, etc.

                          Incidentally, how did it happen?

                          .

I didn't need to wear the kind of rubberized hooded coat I would need

if it was doing something outside that's against the twocat rule but,

though it wasn't, with windy gusts up to 40mph and power outages

all over the place, it was a sturdier windbreaker than a regular

                          fabric one, so I did.

                          .

Good thing too as, though the wind abated by the last mile

of this morning's five-miler, something else started happening

from the skies that made me glad I was wearing it.  whew.

ps - don't tell twocat what it was or what it was doing. .

                          Marathon Maniac #957

                            Greetings from Jamaica!

Leslie, I agree that is just rude and lazy of your SIL, especially about such a crisis.

                            Love the cartoons!

No run for me today, just some lazing by the beach and pool with DH and our "best friend couple" and pedal-boating and reading a good book while I lazed by the beach and pool and eating some interesting island food while I lazed by the beach and pool and a nice nap - did I tell you we are in Jamaica?

Now we are off to explore the resort and locate some coffee.  Our friends expect us to stay up past our usual 9pm bedtime to watch the show and then and go dancing at the disco.  It'll be rough, but we will  try...

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                              Hi All,

Leslie - I agree with your rant!  And sorry to hear about the FIL.

                              Holly - enjoy the warmth!

Got off my duff and took Remi up to Cougar Mountain.  Lots of mud puddles to navigate, but lots of fun.  Did you know it is not a good idea to stop running suddenly in the middle of slippery mud?  Better to keep the momentum going, instead of sliding and almost losing your balance.  Our first relatively warm day in ages, 48F!  Very windy and there were a lot of tree limbs across the trails which I moved if I could.  Remi was so muddy that he got the full salon treatment in the shower when we got home.  About 5 miles.  The photo is of a pond there, that the trail circumnavigates, and you can see the trail on the other side.  I looked for skunk cabbage but saw only 1 to 2 inch high shoots poking up from the mud.  Spring is delayed this year I believe.

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."

It's tough duty, Holly, but someone has got to do it. Enjoy!

Leslie, that's ridiculous. Yes you can say something, of course it's your place. It's your family too, you know. Family by marriage counts.

25 minutes on the elliptical (2.85 miles), half mile walk on the track to cool down after my one mile run -- yes, run -- on the track. Everything felt pretty good which just pleased me to no end. But, I stuck to my plan and stopped at 1 mile. Not sure about tomorrow, I know the plan was no more than every other day, so probably pool again tomorrow and try another run on Sunday. Smile
