40's on the run - week starting 2/8 (Read 410 times)

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." - unknown Heard that quote at church last week and thought it really applied to running and to this group. Together we will go far Smile. Way to go Leslie --- "Finished the 8 3/4 miles in 1:26:18, and I was hoping for 1.5 hours or better, so I'm very happy with that time. Treated myself to a rocky road ice cream cone on the way home." OK Jewels, how did it go for you and your sis????

Nice job Leslie, You have trained hard despite the gb issues. WTG you earned it! Thanks for the kickoff Carol. Wonder how its going for Jewels. Our weather changed, still not bad for February but 30 deg with southeast winds (moisture laden) and gray and some fog. I ran into the wind for a half mile then turned north on a trail road and just worked west and north for 6 or so. I felt pretty good, hi viz coat I wore didn't wick well and felt pretty clammy after I got up to operating temp. Duke the rodeo couple's border collie that lives north of me wanted to run with for awhile, then I riled up the pack of mostly St Benards at the kennels near the end of my run. Going to try and finish up this stand I am making for a hydraulic hose machine this afternoon. Its basically all new steel, sooo I know, whats the fun in that? Smile

The whole world said I shoulda used red but it looked good to Charlene in John Deere Green!!

after I got up to operating temp.
operating temperature....I like that. 9 miles for me. 10:5x pace. About 60F and 30 mph wind.
Quit being so damn serious! When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. "Ya just gotta let it go." OM
I did it! First off, congrats to Leslie on an awesome race. Your pace was killer with the sand and creek crossing. You are strong! Give us a RR when you can. Met a lady at the race that had a T-shirt on that said Humboldt County. We chatted a bit. The race included master elites for some special title they go for. She was one of them. MTA: Nice runs Jim and Ev....... My time: 2:26:09 (11:10 pace) (46/87 AG) (513/735 OA) My sister 2:37:23 (12:01 pace) I'm so proud of her. She is 52 and really doesn't run that much. The causeways (bridges) were really tough. No hills in Brevard County so most runners use the causeways for hill workouts. Man they were tough. The first one was at mile 5, I handled it pretty good. The second bridge was at mile 11. Took everything I had to climb that thing. Thought I would never get to the top. But what goes up must come down, so short, quick steps on the way down to try and make up for the climb. Knee started barking at mile 6 but held up well until about mile 9. By mile 11, which was the causeway, man was it burning. But I really didn't let it slow me down, I just kept telling myself you are almost there. Big party in downtown Melbourne after the race. We hit up Meg O'Malley's listening to a band called ZZ Not. Sounded just like the real thing. Had a couple of beers and ate. My sister looks at me and says " I don't feel good". Within seconds her head went back, her eyes rolled back and she passed out right in the booth. I've never felt a person so clammy before. She was unresponsive.........we yelled for someone to call 911. Took them only about 3 minutes to get there as they were stationed all over the place for the race. She was just barely coming to when they arrived. Apparently her blood pressure plummeted. Took forever for her to really know where she was at and what was going on. She is home now, feeling a little out of it but O.K. Not sure why that happened. I'm thinking the whole nutrition thing might have been the culprit. Anyway......she is fine now. Both my BIL's did the 5K. I have an awesome family. One of my daughters is in Tampa so she couldn't make it but my other daughter and her bf and my husband got there at 6:30 to see me start and they were there at the finish. Actualy they were about .2 from the finish, took pics as I came around the corner and my husband even jumped onto the course and gave me a big high five. He was more excited then I was for Christ Sakes! Maybe it was that beer they were serving to spectators at 8:00 in the morning. Smile Thanks for all your support guys n' gals...... Jewels

WooHOO Jewels! Nice going! What a great day for you, complete with a cheering squad! Glad your knee behaved well enough. ...Was your sister drinking water or something with electrolytes? Just askin', 'cause it sounds sort of like what happened to me over the summer, and I'm pretty sure it was from not enough electrolytes/too much water. STILL - she should get it checked out! She wants to be sure there's nothing funny going on with her heart. She deserves an ekg at least. Arla

Yay Jewels good job, You did IT!! Pretty cool all the family support!! Kinda scarey bout the sis, hope its nothing. In general do people carry their own sports drinks or drink what they provided for a half?

Dang it......I meant to say nice runs Jim and Ev.........I hit the ole modify button to fix it. Undecided Jim, all I can say is that I'm glad I brought my water bottle filled up with G2 and was able to sip on it during the entire race without having to rely on an aid station when you really needed a drink. Arla, does sound the same as what happened to you that one day. I do know that she only took a couple of "sips" at each aid station and that was not near enough. Jewels

Woohooo!! Big grin Big grin Great job Jewels and sis of Jewels!!! Your times were great, and your report is a real inspiration. Thanks so much for telling us about it. Sounds like your sis is on the road to recovery, but wow, that's scary.

Yahoooooo! Way to Go Leslie and Jewels!!! Fabulous times for you both and Jewels Sis (glad she's better) too!!!! You guys rawk !!!! Carol- thanks for starting us and you're going to rawk your race too! Jim- good run with the pack! Ev- nice 9er in the wind! Thanks for the compliments, I have been RMAO. Smile Great w/e of running.Fri was 20" under bright moon and snow.So bright that Buddy and I counted about 30 deer. Sat was 45* . more deer at a different park.Today was a glorious 58* (but windy) for the lr. One day closer to spring !!!

Leslie - wow, just freakin' awesome crazy blazin' fast trail run! I can't imagine the last couple on sand - tough stuff. You sure earned that ice cream!
Arla - Thanks for the great kudos, but it was a road race. And yes, that would be blazin' fast for a trail race. And yes, I did deserve that ice cream. Wink Jewels - Great race, Little Lady! And it definitely sounds like your sis crashed for lack of nutrition. Wow. Glad she's okay. Jim - From my experience, most aid stations provide Gatorade and water. Gatorade doesn't agree with me, so the couple of times I've run a road race, I've carried my own fluids. My suggestion would be that if you intend to use the fluids provided at the stations, find out what they will be using and use it on your training runs. Carol - Very good quote. Ev - Nice run. Was it a tailwind?? Joe - Moonlight, snow, deer, just you and Buddy - sounds wonderful. We spent the day roaming around Humboldt County today. Once I get the pics downloaded, I'll show you a couple. Not as nice a day as yesterday, but grateful to see the rain. We stayed up way too late last night/this morning, and right now I feel like I've been run through the wringer. A couple of glasses of wine and one cosmo, and ugh! I'm a cheap date when it comes to alcohol. Tongue Tomorrow I start the unfortunate cleansing ritual for my surgery. If you guys are lucky, I'll share my experiences with you! Big grin Big grin Big grin

My sister is going to be a happy camper this morning..... They adjusted the times ever so slightly for actual chip timing. She really wanted a sub 12 pace. Her pace showed up as a 12:01 yesterday. This morning she was adjusted to an 11:59 (2:36:49). Mine changed to an 11:07 (2:25:36). She kept saying "if I only hadn't walked those few steps, I could of had a sub 12". This will make her day......it's all about the numbers! Big grin Off to work, quick visit of the nephew at the hospital, then double classes tonight. Can't wait for this day to be over! Jewels

Jewels...That's awesome that they got to come and support you gal/guys! We're gonna wanna see those pics. Congratulations, great job! You foiled what was to be my poor attempt at humor. You answered the question, "What's a causeway?" Anyone? Anyone?.....Bueller? Hope you sister is OK. And contiuned prayers for your nephew. And fatozzig.......Very nice racing! Those trail races sound awfully wonderfully tough. Sand and creek crossings....sounds like fun in a different way than what I'm used to. And...I love me some rocky road! Congrats! And can't wait to see your photos. (the ones of your Humbolt Co. adventures....not the gb!) Good luck with that btw. And yes, it was a tailwind......for half the run! Smile Nice run in the fog, Jim. We're getting that moisture as we speak. It's a relief, but not as much as we need. Joe, a great w/e of running for you, indeed. 37 miles in 3 days....is that about right? Again...impressive! The moonlight run sounded especially fun. Arla....you're another one here with an impressive log. Nice running. Carol good luck on your upcoming Cowtown half. I'll be running the Beacon on the Bay 25K on the same day. What time does your race start? Hey mtnchck.....glad you stopped in for a visit the othr day. I didn't know you were french. Smile Have a great week folks. And good running to all.

Morning Ladies and Gents - I'm so hungry right now, I could eat the rotting back end of a water buffalo. . . . Okay, maybe not rotting, but . . . . And when I'm hungry, I get really grouchy. I have a feeling this is going to be a long, long day. Right now I'm staring down a mug of chicken broth wishing like crazy it was a bagel w/cc and a big ole cup of coffee. (((sigh))) They said I could have coffee w/sugar, but no cream. My comment: "What's the point?" I'm guessing that bowl of Jello I made last night is gonna be looking real good when I get home around 11:00. This was one of our coldest mornings in awhile, so I was glad I didn't have to run. Only 27 degrees on our back porch when I left for work at 7:30. Later!

Ewwww.......the rotting back end of a water buffalo. You must REALLY be hungry. Would love to see your pics of Humboldt County. The lady I mentioned that had the Humboldt County t-shirt on, well it also had the 6 River Run Club or something to that effect on it as well. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow.......even though you will have some down time, you are going to be feeling so much better when you've completely healed. Nephew is doing really well......thanks for all the good vibes you all sent. The last thing we are waiting on are the biopsy results. (Fingers crossed) Nice running Joe.......and what a beautiful run at that! Wow, that is a lot of deer to see at once! Jewels

Good job everyone on your races and runs. Jewels - I hope your sister is doing better, and gets herself checked out to be safe. I'm still successfully getting to the park with hills for me to get ready for Napa next month. I did also get out in the neighborhood over the weekend, and enjoyed the fabulous weather we're having here. While I was out I had a Funeral Procession come towards me, and I was unsure of what proper etiquette/protocal was. I know here on the 2 lane road I was on, the traffic in both directions stops and waits for it to go by. As a runner, should I stop and wait also? I wound up turning down a differnt road before it got to me, but would like to know for future reference. I hope that it doesn't happen again, but one of the roads I frequent has a few churches on it, or just off it, so it could happen again. Stay safe. Salty
