40s+ On the Run - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (W/E 12/27/08) (Read 477 times)

Hey Folks - Cindy and Joe have great posts for today over on last week's thread. After reading Cindy's post, I had to take a nap. I was exhausted. (Jeez Louise! How does she do it??) Stayed up waaay too late (well, for me) last night ('til around 12:30/1:00), and my butt is dragging today. Luckily, I don't have really anything to do, so I can be a slug if I want. Cindy - Ginger might help the nausea some, but it's the pain that I can't ever find anything to help. Well, except for a Vicodin - which does wonders for my disposition in those times, too! Big grin Anyway, I'm definitely calling my NP tomorrow. Joe - Buddy ran 1600 miles!! Wow! He's gonna out live all of us, being in such great shape. Have a great day!

3 miles or so this morning, still seriously cold and nasty winds today. Achilles actually felt good today. I tried to work my Nirvanas in the rotation last week as I have a low mileage pair I would like to wear out, but my bod just won't tolerate much of a medial post it seems. I wore the wave riders today with no problems other than cold toes Smile. Going to stay on the celebrex until the hip calms down.I think a tight IT band tries to misalign that joint then fires up a little arthritis. Gotta keep it stretched out, did order the foam roller as it seems popular among our group. Jewels I wasn't thinking correctly cause mine doesn't go all the way to the knee but as Joe and Leslie said try the it band remedies. Lynda and I went to North Platte for a little shopping yesterday, just not in the shopping mood I guess, ended up driving 160 miles for one little firetruck and some antacids etc., from Wallyworld for dad. Pickup thermometer hit minus 10 on the way home. Did stop in the dreadmill store, am seriously thinking on one now. Could put it in our farm shop or possibly at my dads house in town so all of us could use it ..... Got a Chiristmas card from Jonathan, he said he might think about having a run class after the new year. Kinda miss our wednesday class nights (runs and such). He has some neat solitary routes through some sandhill pastures that are between his house and mine. I think it would be fun to put on a 10 miler or half marathon in the sticks.

The whole world said I shoulda used red but it looked good to Charlene in John Deere Green!!

Nice going once again in the cold Jim. Shoot, I never ran on the treadmill much but in those temps, hhmmmm. Leslie- hope you're feeling better today.I agree with you about Cindy.I think that she may just be WonderWoman or something. Can't say much to ease the pain Evryday.I was there last week.I already warned the wife and kids and animals to steer clear tonight ,Dad's going to be a nervous wreck. I'm taking the strategy that if I have a good Sunday long run,the day's a success. A NYG's win would be gravy(fingers crossed). Run was 16 solo miles this morning.About 38*,steady rain with intermittent downpours.Light wind with 0% dryness. Time to get the fireplace going, kick back, and have myself a cold one! Great Day my friends Smile

Hey Mtnchck...you got in some good miles today. I was gonna run some for you as you had asked. But then i got to thinkin'....You're up in the beautiful mountains snow skiing and doin' all the cool stuff. So I went ahead and ran a couple for you anyway. Joe, I don't have the NFL network either.....I went over to my sister's place and watched it. Woe is me. Black eye Got in a really nice 12 miler.....just got back. I picked the pace up the last 3 miles pretty good. 10:31 pace overall. Think I'll cut back this next week. It's appropriate the subject line is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." It's one of my favorite Christmas songs. The thread that Sarge started about the carols had me singing that song for the duration of my run today. Thanks Sarge. Jewels, fatozzig and Jim and othrs....here's to getting yourselves healed up and back to perfection very soon.

Temps moderated to a balmy 14 degrees and wind went to nothing so tacked on another 3.1 refreshing miles. Big grin Now thats more like it! Cindy I'm thinking Wonder woman also to go all the way to Hastings and back with grands in tow in this kind of weather. Glad you got some "Me " time or "Me and Mairead" time to get a run in. How's Doug's running coming? Any decent races on the front range Feb/Mar time frame? Joe nice run in the rain and cold, that couldn't have been too pleasant. Do you run the streets when its muddy or still stay on the trails? Leslie hope you get some good anwers tommorow! MT keep spelling and grammar police away! MTA Our east windows kinda shook about 10 minutes ago 'bout the time the Giants muffed that punt in OT. How Bout those Giants!! Smile

Thanks for getting us going Leslie.... So nice to hear from Cindy. Glad you and Mariread got that run in. Thanks for the advice on the rolling pin. "Rolled" everything down yesterday and will do it all this week and try to go for a run after Christmas. Nice 12 miler for Evryday......hey, I didn't know your wife ran as well. It's nice to have a spouse that runs! You are brave Jim......way to get out there in the cold and get in some miles. Take it slow on the hip. I think you are right about the arthritis. That old hip injury just gets "fired" up every so often because of the arthritis settling in. Isn't it great getting older? Wink Joe....a belated congrats on all those miles you and Buddy put in. Do you have any race plans for '09? Carol, Arla and Kelly....hope you are getting in some runs this past week and all is well! High 70's thru out this past weekend. Christmas Day forecast will probably hit 80! Strange weather I tell ya. So no running for me this week, but I'll be checking in with everyone....I think I may be getting a cold as well. Woke up with a sore throat..... Undecided Jewels

Nice run, Joe. A cold rain and 16 miles makes for a great long run.....once it's over! < wildchld="" closes="" eyes="" and="" doesn't="" read="" this="" /> Hey Joe, and add to that, enjoy that gravy! What a game last night! Congrats on the home field advantage. < ildchld="" opens="" eyes="" /> Jewels....my wife and I used to run back in the day. Then we both kind of got out of the pleasure. A few years ago, I started back up and now the DW has joined in again. Some times we'll go out and run together. We usually run on a 3 mile looped course. She'll go one way and I'll go the othr so we can meet up somewhere along the way and high five each othr. Must sound kind of corny, but that's what we do!

I think it's great! I would absolutely love it if the Hub worked out with me, even a little bit. But, alas, it ain't gonna happen in the foreseeable future. And about those workouts - Day 4 of doing absolutely nothing. Blush This has to remedy itself by tomorrow morning. It has to. Joe - Echoing Ev's comments, great run for you! FJ - Moderate temps at 14 degrees. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!! <gasping> Oh, that's good! Big grin Jewels - Did it hurt when you rolled your leg? . . . . 'cause it will <insert> I've belted out a few 4-letters words before whilst using ye ole foam roller. Cindy - Glad you and Mairead got out for awhile. Okay - I gotta go get ready for work. Got up and did my transcription since I was wide awake at 6:00 a.m. listening to lots of thunder and then a brief torrential downpour with small hail. Will check in later.</insert></gasping>

Leslie, I had my daughter help out with the rolling. I guess I need to tell her to roll harder because it didn't hurt EXCEPT when she rolled it over the outer knee. That hurt, but the thigh/hip/butt area didn't hurt. Then I googled some stuff and I read that I should not roll the knee area just everything else connected. Does that seem right? Ya, it would be a snowy day in East Central Florida when my hub would run with me! So.....ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Funny thing is, his brother is a workout fanatic/health nut. Even funnier thing is that the 2 of them went together to one of these mobile clinics that do a full body checkup and guess what? My husbands results were all normal and his brother had a few bad "numbers". Go figure...... Evryday.....that is not corny at all! That is great..... Jewels

Jewels - When I use my foam roller, I balance myself on my right side, using my arms and with my left leg crossed over the top of my right, but not touching it. I then roll from just a little above the knee (maybe an inch or so??) up through the hip area - back and forth. It's a slow roll, and I put as much weight on it as I can stand at the time. If this make sense, I roll back and forth from directly on the right side to sort of the right/front of the thigh/knee area. I also just use my thumbs real hard and massage on the right front/side just above the knee. If it's at all tight, you'll be able to feel this. I've done it 'til I'm nauseous, but it really helps if you're consistent. Also, when you run on the road, do you change up the side of the road you're running on? I mean, do you always run, say, on the left side? Remember, most roads are not flat. If you constantly run on one side of the road - like the left side - your right leg is always on the shorter part of the slope. You're off kilter. It's important to change this up. When possible, I run down the middle of the road and only move to the side when I need to. Asked The Hub to take Ziggy to the vet for his yearly shots. Said he opened the door of the carrier in the garage with the door to the house closed, then came inside. He went to get Zig off the bed - all the cats (except Fatso, who couldn't care less anymore . . . or cant' hear) had scattered. Now he has to lure him out from under the bed. Good thing he has all day to get him there! Big grin

Oof - just caught up with all the goings on - sure is a lot of it! - atrocious weather, holiday plans or non-plans (I'm with you Leslie on not always being in the mood - plus I think families should get together when the weather's nice so they can travel safely), owie IT bands and hips, and many HTFU miles -- Wow! Shocked Leslie - what's up on the gall bladder front? Don't mess with that, it can be very serious should it rupture! Joe - I think you'll make a fine pace bunny for me next year Evil grin Jewels - good luck with your at-home physical therapy, I think you'll get it sorted out... Cindy - you have got to have the craziest lifestyle of anyone I know! Big grin Jim - sounds like your injuries are doing pretty well considering how cold it is - I know cooler weather makes everything on me feel more achy... Busy busy busy here with office parties, neighborhood parties, shopping (not doing too well there), and a final 20 miler which turned into a bit over 21 per Garmin. Took it SUPER slow, I sure didn't want to get hurt at this point, which worked out great in terms of how I feel today. So now I get to taper just in time to travel to see mom (good in terms of having time to travel/visit) and eat too much holiday food (bad in terms of needing less food right now)! Arla

Okay - My nurse practitioner called me back today and says, "Well, Leslie, I'm embarrassed to say that we've never had your gall bladder checked!" So tomorrow I go for a full panel of blood work (haven't had any done in over 5 years Roll eyes ), and will be awaiting phone calls to get an abdominal ultra sound scheduled, as well as an appointment with an internal specialist for a hydascan (?). If it ends up being the gall bladder, they will do a laproscopy (sp?) procedure, remove the gall bladder, and I'll be down for the count for 2 weeks - which is a whole heck of a lot better than 8 weeks due to abdominal surgery. If my gall bladder is the problem, it will be SO nice to have all of this finally over and done with. I've been dealing with "stomach" issues since I was a kid and had a peptic ulcer. I'm very tired of it all, never knowing when it's gonna hit, how bad it's gonna be, etc. Well, I have one more thing to do, then I'm out of here (work) 'til Monday. Yippee!!

Congratulations on getting to this point. You've done the hardest part.....the training. Now relax and play things out in your mind. What a great feeling to be where you are with your training. Enjoy it and get mentally prepared for the race. You're gonna do great! Good luck tomorrow fatozzig.
