Question of the day: What do you get when you cross a Dark Horse and A Mustang Sally ? JJJesee sounds like a great day. What a workout though. You da man! 5 miles in 3 inches of new snow on top of the 5 inches of day old snow while in the process of getting 3 to 5 more inches of snow before tomorrows run. Just another day in Michigan in January. I must be getting used to the temps because 18 degrees today felt balmy but my calves were really tight because of the unstable footing I think. Trudged along at 10 minute miles and iced the legs after. Great runs everyone

Question of the day: What do you get when you cross a Dark Horse and A Mustang Sally ?
They're both really fast and strong - I'd be afraid to cross either one of them. Wink Eliz

Gppd runs to all Masters! 9 tempo miles with some hills thrown in for fun. 9:10 pace. It was 42F but with the wind, it sure didnt' feel like it. Still a pretty nice day, though. It was good doing the hills. I can see over the whole town when I get to the top. Course I can't see crap when I get to the bottom....but it sure looks nice at the top.

History lesson for Evryday and his father. In the days of wooden sailing ships, warships had brass plates with dimples on it nailed to the deck, next to each cannon. The dimples held the cannonballs in place, so when the ship rolled with the waves the cannon balls would not roll all over the deck and hurt the sailors on their own ship. This brass plate was called a brass monkey. When it got really cold the brass plate would shrink somewhat. Sometimes it shrank so much that dimples got smaller and would no longer hold the cannon balls in place, and the cannon balls would roll around the deck. Thus the saying, its so cold that it froze the balls off a brass monkey.

Yes, Cash that's right! A professor friend of mine had explained the origin of the phrase to me, also. Thanks for the reply!

Cash, I love you, man, but this "history lesson" has no basis in reality. Even before I researched this story on the Internet, which took me less than one minute, I knew it couldn't be true. The decks of sailing ships are constantly tilting and rocking from the action of the waves. The turbulence of the sea is very much greater than any contraction of brass due to low temperatures. This makes it obvious that any "brass plate with dimples" small enough to be affected by the temperature would be useless on the deck of a sailing ship. "The Navy says there is no evidence that the phrase had anything to do with ships or ships with cannon balls." http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/b/brassmonkeys.htm Dark Horse

Late post for me. 2 miles pushing GD in stroller. It was a little cool, but she had a great time.
dhtim, you're on a roll. are you doing anything different?
Debbie, I'm running within myself. Not going very fast or very far. I'm not sure what's wrong with my left knee area--I say "area" because the pain seems to extend above and below the knee, on the inside of the leg--and x-rays showed nothing. It seems that right now I can run a few miles at a time, if I don't go faster than about 9:00 miles. So I'm taking what my body will give right now. We'll see how it goes. Last year at this time I was running 10 miles three or four times a week, sometimes below 7:30 mile pace. Can't do that right now, for whatever reason, and I have to acccept that. Dark Horse

Soundie, I'll go to Eugene if you room with me.
Hey DH, after meeting each other at the giant surprise Seattle Marathon you and econo gave us last November, you know I don't like to brag or anything like that but I not only got to ride the Amtrack all the way from Seattle to Oregon with soundasweetalina but, though only Tammacutalina is the only other person who knew until now, I stayed ALL NIGHT in soundie's hotel room and the next day Tam ran with me for the first five miles of the inaugural Eugene Marathon and later escorted me to the lab/econo/rindy goddess aid station. you were a real gentleman for the SM and we hope to see you at Eugene too.

Pacific Northwest wimmen, don't start with me. I can handle all of you. Except maybe Mustang Sally.
Snort, ha, yeah... The beers are coming out to Eugene?? Two weeks after Boston? Support crew or what? Hmmm, I may have to dig out that application and look it over again.... Burger...? Really?? Hmmmmm. Where's that money tree...
Evan, I goofed. I think the Beers are doing Portland, though what's with that? That's like 5 months late for the party. All the beer will be flat and warm. I am liking the Dark Horse + Mustang Sally concept very much. I predict sassy zingers and much more flying between the two equines. Tet! Now, we both know you slept through most of both those experiences. All that tapering makes you sleepy I guess. Roll eyes Thanks for the lesson on ship balls today to those who contributed. Lovely run in Discovery Park just before sunset. Crunchy, frosty trail. Orange Olympics. Rainier even snuck out to join her sister peaks for a winter show. ( Dg, I decided not to tow the rower and waited until I returned to the health club to tackle the beast for 12 whole mins. )
