Will be working at a Christmas parade this afternoon & will miss Fla./Ala. game  I wish we could have some of Bill's 74F snow

    Enjoy your runs and day!

Courage ! Do one brave thing today...then run like hell.

    Henrun

44  in cambridge, ma. ran fresh pond 2.5 mile race this morning in IRC b4 the snows. I don't speed train as I prefer running to racing, but henrun likes to race, so off we went this morning. I worked to pass a couple of men and when they called the time as i finished it was 22.23 - a PR by almost 30 seconds. it wasn't until i got home and used a pace calculator that I realized it was a hair under 9 minute miles something i had never done. henrun came in a few minutes after me, not a PR,but a good run. marj

        Nice job Marj!!!

No snow here. 75° and 95% humidity at 6:30 AM. Ugghhh.

So far my well-made plans for the weekend haven't started out well. I decided to skip the 5K today since I didn't sleep well at all and it was storming during the night.

It cleared up eventually so I went out for 8 miles - 4 easy and 4 moderate. I ran it more like MP though.

The tree is up though (dang, that thing is heavy!) so some of the weekend has started off as planned.

        One day at a time

It's quiet today!  Maybe everyone is putting up their tree.  Kids are scattered today, so we'll get ours tomorrow.  3.1 non-stop, slow miles for me today.  Another step forward!  The sky is very heavy now - it it supposed to start raining soon, then it will turn to snow overnight.

Had to cancel my 5K race, because of ice on the highway across the Coast Range.  Nuts! But safe, anyway.  Instead, I think I will run the same distance here in town, after the temp. goes above freezing.  No slick streets for me.   Henrun and Marj, bravo!   You two are something else, and I admire you.

Got to convince DH to get out there and cut down the little tree that will be perfect this year.  We have a tree farm here, but Douglas Firs are not the best of Christmas trees.

            MM#209 / JapanJoyful#803

nothing quiet where I am this weekend with 42.195k in Saturday's monthly Osaka Castle Marathon maybe makin' up for woods missing hers.  Then celebrated all evening at the annual meeting of the Japan 100-Marathon Joyful Running Club with nearly 100 members present to say nothing of onsen, onsen, onsen (hot springs at the hotel) especially with the cold water baths getting lots of use for tired legs. Perfect way to get ready for today's post-meeting Akaho Marathon in two hours.

roch, when I saw that cartoon in the Freep (Detroit Free Press for you non Michiganders), I thought I should see if I could remember how to post it here.  You saved me from thinking and possibly getting frustrated.  A while back, I posted a cartoon by the same person and remembered that someone here said they knew the cartoonist.  Now I know it was CNY.  teresa, good luck with your on line coach.  marj and henrun nice race this morning, especially marj with big PR and first time under 9 minute pace.  tet, way to go on another marathon.

This morning, I had planned on a race in a small nearby town.  The weather forecast didn't look good (sounds like a lot of you).  In my case, the temp ended up being not terrible, mid 20s with a light wind, but none of the snow and icy roads we'd been threatened with.  There was a 10K, 5K, and 5K walk.  I debated between the 5 and 10K but felt wimpy so signed up for the 5K.  I ended up at 26:26, 31/48 OA, and 1/4 in AG (60-69).  I saw a lot of my racing buds and enjoyed myself.  This race put my "at least one race each calendar month" string at 6 years.

A good day and good runs for all.

                Carolyn

Tom, congrats on 1st in AG!  Your string of races every month for 6 years is most impressive. Glad the weather cooperated for your race.

Marj, congrats on a big PR. You and Henrun are an inspiration to all of us.

4 carpy miles with Tazzie and Ladybug.  I wanted to do 8-10 miles since the weather is nice but is gonna deteriorate tomorrow, but I had no energy.  The wind was howling last night although thankfully it's calm today, but the snow was all blown into drifts and the roads were terrible.  I ran in yaktrax but had a hard time with the drifts, and this was running right down the middle of the dirt road.  Tomorrow I'll probably have to go to the rec center and run on the indoor track because it's supposed to be snowing and single digit temps.

DD and I are putting up some Christmas decorations today - we don't do our tree till Christmas Eve, but we put up lights and garlands in the house earlier.

Company Christmas party tonight - it's a small company and we go out to a nice restaurant.  DH is away this week so I'll have to go solo, but he hates company parties anyway.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

Sarge – working at the Christmas parade sounds like fun, though.  Wait a minute, are you a policeman?  Maybe not as much fun then.

Marj – great job!  (Henrun, too)

Tetsujin – you continue to amaze!  Lovely picture.

TomS – congratulations on winning 1st in AG, plus the even more amazing achievement of one race every month for 6 years – wow!

Wildchild - have fun and enjoy some good food!

7 easy-paced miles for me this morning – 4.6 miles outside in 25° and then 2.4 miles on the TM.  I’m still working out the dress code for these colder temps, but the real problem I’m having is my hands.  Even with my new Saucony convertible running gloves, by the 3rd mile my fingertips were aching.  I don’t know if my “cold hands” problem has gotten much worse since last year (when I could almost always last 5 miles before a change to warmer gloves), or if it’s the gloves themselves.  I find myself dreading my LRs because of the cold.  (sigh)  I know I did LRs all last winter in temps this cold or worse, so it’s just a matter of “HTFU Holly and get used to it.”

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                      Tom,

A big congrats to your 6 year string of a race every month.

                       Holly,

I am also being kinda wimpy about the cold. I went to the gym for the last 2 days for my shorter runs but tomorrow I will also have to HTFU and bring out the Big Boy Pants ! I better get used to it the winter hasn't even started yet.

3.1 easy miles on the treadmill. I was going to cross train today but was crunched for time and  decided on a easy run instead.

                      Trails are hard!

Holly--I remember one of my first attempts at advise when I landed on CR was to offer you how to keep your hands warm, based on my lengthy 30 minute LRs.    you very nicely said that didn't work too well for 2+ hours.  I can't remember if you've used the charcoal hand warmers, but i noticed that they have boxes of 40 pairs on sale at our BJs.  you can get at least a couple of uses out of them by sealing them in a ziplock bag and sucking the air out of them.  Makes them a little more economical.

very nice run, Marj.   It's very definitely snowing this evening.  Almost feels like it's getting close to Christmas.

Tom--Congrats on your AG wins.  But your string of races for 6 years is so impressive.  It seems as I have a hard time running for 6 months, much less racing so much.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

                          Congrats Tom!!  You stud you!

and huge congrats to Marj also!  Nice running to both you and Henry.

and tet is off enjoying foreign lands again!

I went out for 6 miles today. 3 with the dogs, and 3 without.

It is always so much fun to read about Marj and Henry's adventures.

so...our taperboy is back to Japan having the time of his life. Great marathon there taper king.

                            Hi stumpy.

Great run Tammy. Did you get any snow today?

Good luck in finding the solution for your hands Holly.

Anyone heard how Karin did on her race today?

What a fantastic day I had today. I woke up and decided I was going to paint one side of my office in this sage color paint I saw the other day at the hardware store and that I liked so much because it would match the painting I have on the wall that I brought back from China with me a while back. Anyway, I started the painting job then I left it for my son to finish the job for me while I went for a run. To avoid running against the wind my DH drove me to the woods and I ran back home. My first hour was great, a strong pace, but not too hard, but then the wind started to pick up and it started to snow...the next hour and twenty minutes were brutal, but I got it done.

Busy now cooking dinner for my family and listening to some great 70s songs in Pandora radio. Pumpkin risotto, baked salmon, baby green salad sprinkled with some toasted pumpkin seeds (I found a great recipe for this looking around the recipe link that twocat gave us the other night). I even got my harvest tablecloth on the table. Dinner anyone?

Nice race Tom!  But that 6 yr streak is really impressive!

Tet.. you always amaze... next marathon right after the party from the first!

No snow here.. only 40° rain... boo hoo!

Tree up and lit, tomorrow decorate. Watching "White Christmas".  I guess shopping will have to come soon!

30 min elliptical today.  Knee feeling better.  MRI showed some cartilage missing on the underneath outside of the knee cap.  Dr said it would have taken years to wear away.  I don't know if that's the issue or not since the knee issues started in July.  This first rest ( 3 weeks now) is helping alot.  Specialist appt Jan 4th.  Meanwhile, play it by feel. If it starts hurting back off, if not, continue.  5 Mile brisk walk 14:47 pace was fine yesterday.  Elliptical is fine. Quad strengthening with extention under weight from almost straight to straight is helping too (improves tracking).  I'll wait a couple more weeks before testing it again (except I need to run a 5K on the 13th!).

Anybody know of runners with some cartilage missing behind the knee cap? (I never had any of the symptoms of "Runner's Knee", like soreness behind the knee cap which makes me suspicious)

Hi Maraposai! Sounds like you had a wonderful day indeed! I love the description of most of your days (except in the rare cases when you are down) anyway.

                                TomS---you rock!

                                Fabulous racing Marj!

Good day for all here. How did the race go for the kids Craneium?

I am watching the series finale of BBC America's Robin Hood with my guys after an excellent day. The Hot Chocolate 5k run was awesome! This was a 200 participant race 5 years ago and today's version had 4,100 participants resulting in $91,000 raised for Safe Passage---a domestic violence shelter/program in my hometown. I am so proud of us for blowing the roof off of the annual goals each time! I ran a 21:30 gun time and the chip times will be posted in the next few days with official results. I know I didn't place---first woman came through in low 17:00s and the winner was Eric Nedeau  in 15 something. 10 miles total on the day for me since I ran to the race and home and also dressed like an elf. I got into the spirit of the event and had a blast.

We headed to Bolton, Ct for the kiddos hockey game soon afterwards (game 3 out of 5 this weekend) and I had great news from one of my friends from Syracuse (Central New York or CNY that is!) His daughter is a  high school sophomore on the (as of today) 4 time Nike National Cross Country Championship team. I am so proud of my childhood hometown. Another CNY running dynasty. Here's an e-mail exchange between us (read up from the bottom for a dose of parental pride!) :

Thanks so much. What an emotional day. Not only did they pull it off for #4, but Katie finished as our #1 girl today. And a 17 second compression to boot!  I'm a wreck but I think the beers might flow soon!!

                                Thanks karin.
