Tramps (hip/knee exercises + core work)
Tomwhite (40 min pool run with letters)
    RunnerKSA (5 miles)

Wildchild (6.8 mile trail race - 2nd AG, with 60th birthday coming up)
Tammy (7.7 early morning miles ahead of high heat)
Catwhoorg (10+ TM miles, ducking heat)

C-R (18 holes walking in the morning + 4.4 afternoon recovery miles)

    StarrRuns (3 morning miles)

Twocat (Finished 80th and a minute slower than last year in his weird distance race)

    Holly (5.1 miles)

“Conquer the heat, conquer the hills.” That’s a heck of a challenging motto, Pfriese.

Good racing, and good job of beating Bill, Wildchild. And congrats on your upcoming Bday and a new age group!

Rafting is a great way to deal with the heat, Tammy. Good planning!

Evanflein, I use Athlinks to track my races. Great job in your 8K - I’m glad DH was there to solve problems and provide support, and hold your keys.

Mike, your racing history is pretty impressive too. I’m glad you had a good time running with a friend - nice COP. Yeah - that is what jigsaw puzzles do…

Good for you for walking the links, C-R. Hard to believe that no one else does.

Tet, I'm glad you enjoyed the fireworks and full moon over the Cascades. No wonder you love running so much!

Yeah, Starr, the one bummer about working out when the temp is low early in the AM is that the humidity is often higher then. Life is full of trade-offs, isn't it? Dew point is, indeed, a good indicator of how ugly the humidity is. I'm glad you got your bikes fixed and scored some good deals on the shopping trip. Best of luck to you and DSis on the Germany trip.

Quite the adventure, and nice towing deal, Holly!

Tomorrow morning, DW and I are leaving for an almost 2-week vacation. It has been over 30 years since we've been away for that long. We’ll be on Prince Edward Island (Canada) till Saturday, and then in tiny Castine, ME (on Penobscot Bay) till the 22nd. I may check in here, and I may not. But I will be walking.

8.6 RW miles this morning in 63° temps and drying air (after last evening's intense thunderstorms). I was sproinkless this morning, so I just did the best I could and got it done.

    Have a greta Sunday!

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

    Tramps

Jay--that vacation sounds great. Have a wonderful time.

Everybody else--what the heck are we gonna do?!! Jay's leaving for two weeks!!  No awesome daily summaries!

Add Tammy's canyon area to places I might move to.  Beautiful.

      Nice going racers...Carolyn, Erika, Twocat

C-R--I don't get riding in a golf cart.  Isn't this supposed to be exercise, too?  Of course, I've never golfed so...

The "conquer the heat" motto from Paul's race reminds me of our local 50K rail trail, which runs in mid-August--the hottest, muggiest, nastiest time of the year here.  I told the RD, "I'd consider running this one day but why August? I hate running in that heat."  He said it was intentional.  He felt every ultra should have it's own challenge and since the rail trail wasn't technically difficult, the heat and humidity was the challenge.  Okay...I guess so.  I've never run it.

I used Erika's method and counted up my races in my log. I think it's pretty complete because I transferred races when I moved here in case there were any PRs.  I was expecting about 50.  I got 103. Wow!  I had no idea.  That includes 17 marathons and 22 halfs. I've only done one relay.  It was very early when a colleague got me to run a leg of the Richmond marathon, back when they had relays.  I think the 6+ miles was the longest I'd ever run then.

Well, I've done the unthinkable. In light of my knee troubles, I've bought a road bike so I can do some low-impact exercise.  It's red and black.  With two wheels and 10 gears. That's about as much as I know about bikes. Now I need to buy a goofy helmet. I don't think I've ridden a bike in 20 years. I'm told it's a good bike. It should be, given that I spent about as much money on it as I've spent on running during the last 10 years combined. I know I should be excited about this but I can't shake the feeling that I've just bought a slick wheelchair. I'm sure my attitude will change once I get out there and start enjoying it....or get hit by some idiot texting while driving.  Did I mention that not running is putting me in a bad mood?

Speaking of not running... just hip/knee exercises today.

      Be safe. Be kind.

Not sure if this link will come through, but this is where all my friends and family members cycle.  The guy has been arrested.  It's just horrible.

11.6 miles this morning.  Lower humidity.  I stopped back at the truck at 5 1/2 to check the Ironman tracker for my son's Muskoka 70.3 but the trackers weren't working.  It's hard for me to do my run while he's racing.  Looks like he's 2nd in age group off the bike and maybe 6th overall.  Hard to tell from the tracker.

                    Good point, tomwhite.

                    Hi friends.

Just got back from Folly Beach yesterday. One week of vacation with Lilmissrosie... wait, she can't be "Miss" anymore since she's a married lady with a 6 months old baby boy!  Anyway. we had a nice time playing in the ocean.

Our son (middle child), had rented a place with his buddies, so we got to visit with them a while.

Our younger son (third child of the three) had to drive down separately because he had to work on Wednesday. Unfortunately, he was in a 4 car chain reaction car wreck on 95 South near Bensen, NC.  He was the third car. He was driving "Sparky" our trusty 2010 Prius.

Sparky kept Blaine from serious injury. But paid the ultimate sacrifice. Being deemed totaled by the insurance adjuster.

We are grateful Blaine was safe. And that his sister and her husband were an hour and fifteen minutes behind  so they could bring him to the beach. They were happy the baby had his godfather in the backseat to entertain him!

Despite the frightening start, the weather and respite was wonderful. I was able to run a few miles on the beach a couple of mornings. We walked more often.

Because.... The Rocket Scientist has a bum knee!  We are both afraid that the 50th State is in jeopardy. The rs wanted to continue to run. I told him he should give it as much rest as possible and just try to run the marathon on whatever hay he has in the barn.

Tramps, are you a cautionary tale? By the way, we love our bikes! We ride the Virginia Capital Trail we access it less than a mile from our house. Come on down!

I've been reading about everyone's adventures and enjoying the forum. It is difficult for me to post due to a case of tenosynovitis

I see a hand specialist on Tuesday. I had surgery on my left wrist for this in 2013. I guess my right wrist didn't want to be left out. What a pain! I think tending to my dear GS for the past 3 months has aggravated the tendon. Drat.

I have been enjoying watching the MLB station and my favorite team.

very scary accident! glad he was not seriously hurt and it all still worked out to spend family time together.

Well, nix rafting today. David woke up not feeling well. He rarely gets sick or run down, so when he is, I know he just needs to chill for the day. darn. was really looking forward to getting out of the AC house and cooling in the river. We'll shoot for next weekend. it's not like this heat is going anywhere for a few months. And next Sunday is DH's bday, so i guess that's a good way to spend a birthday too.

                      Tammy

Oh no!  I'm so sorry about the accident!  Glad he wasn't badly hurt and I'm sorry about Sparky!

coastwalker gone for two weeks!  How will the daily continue!  Who will start it?  We are doomed! Doomed I tell you! Have a good trip! I hope we are all alive when you return.

Tramps it is true, if running is the world's cheapest sport then bike riding is about the most expensive. I suppose car, boat and airplane racing cost more. Then there is skydiving. Anyone know if skydiving is expensive? Scuba can cost a lot too. All that equipment is not cheap. Well, now that I think about maybe bike riding is pretty cheap! No matter, I hope it does lift your spirits. Also, tomwhite might be on to something with the rear view mirror thing.

RunnerKSA congratulations to your DS! Very nice.

spacityrunner you should look at my log! I have all sorts of odd distances in it.

catwhoorg man that is some tough workout! 7x1200m!!! My max, total max is 6x1000m.

TammyinGP so do you have your DH's birthday present picked out? I can never figure out what to get my DW.

Holly S. if you have to wait 90 minutes to get into a restaurant it better be good! Sorry, the place did not make the cut for a wait that long.

wildchild you mean like a Ragnar relay? The things are hardly races! They probably should not count as even one race. Not unless parties in general count as races!

Race results were posted today. I finished yesterday's 3.042 mile race with a 7:20 pace. That got me 17/50 in my AG. At least I cracked the top half this time.  More speed work on tap for tomorrow to help push that pace down a bit. I would really like to drop my 5k pace back under 7, where it was this past spring. In case anybody is curious, the race winner was 41 and finished in a 5:11 pace. We have some pretty fast people in my town!

Live like you are dying not like you are afraid to die.

                            Marathon Maniac #957

Tramps - re knee issues - are you sure biking is okay?  It seemed to me when I was fighting knee stuff that biking just aggravated it.

                              Jay - enjoy!

RunnerKSA - what kind of nutjob deliberately hits bikers?  Glad he has been arrested. And congrats to your DS!

Rosey - hiyah!  Glad Blaine was okay, even if Sparky did not make it. Here's hoping RS' knee gets better!

So, yesterday, flat tire, (although we were fortunate to have insurance and friends to help, although NO TIRE STORES OPEN ON SUNDAY - what's with that?  So I borrowed a vehicle from SD and will take the tire to Tire Discounters when they open in the morning and go in a little late to work.  DH will put new tire on car tomorrow night.

Today's drama - DD had her IPhone stolen at a pool party last night, a small gathering of friends at a well-to-do friend's home.  DD is of course terribly upset (all these kids are from families that can easily buy them phones, why would someone steal mine?), and she has only had this darn phone in March, when her other phone died.  The Find My IPhone app tracked her phone's last usage to a house south of here, and DH took her over there but no one was home.  I filed a police report (required for the insurance) and went down to AT&T to find out how to file a claim with the insurance we carry on her phone.  So the rep says to me, "I see there is only $188 left owing on the phone, so you could just pay it off and upgrade.  Or, if you want, you can notify the insurance."  I just stared at him.  "So you're telling me," I said, "that I can pay $188 to pay off the old phone, then spend an additional $700 to purchase a new phone, OR, I could utilize the insurance I have been paying on for several years and get a NEW PHONE for the $75 deductible, right?"  "Well, you could do that if you want," he said, "but a lot of people just choose to upgrade.  It's just a monthly payment."

Just how stupid does he take me for?  Why on earth would I  be paying for insurance if I was just planning on paying in full for a new phone?  How many people does this salesman scam into a new purchase this way?

Anyhoo, this whole issue hijacked quite a bit of my day.

BUT, I did get out for 19.3 miles this morning.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                              C-R

Hey all. Busy in here. Enjoybthat vacation Jay. Too funny Tramps. Sorry Holly. Teen life is a never ending drama. Congrats to your son Karen. Wonder where he for those genes. Heh.

Another 18 this morning. We played in 3 1/2 hours with me walking and the guys were amazed. Told them I'm used to playing in 3 1/4 walking so they were slowing me down. Ran 15.5 This afternoon. Ugh. Hard on this old body but I have to get ready for my marathon. Oh here's a nice shock. Added the boys to our insurance for the VW and get an $1800/yr increase. Yeah that car has to go. Anyone interested in a week cared Passer?

                                Gotta run. Cheers.
