Ernie update... (Read 398 times)

He is now dripping bloody urine all over the floor. Randomly. I assume this means his pee pee hurts. The vet says if I take him to the local specialist i'll end up spending more money than taking him to UT... and that I should just keep him on meds, the prescription diet food (for urinary tract problems), and fish oil. She doesn't think he's in pain. I don't either, but mostly because he's stoned from the pain killers. She thinks I should wait and see if these things help him since I can't take him to UT and that I shouldn't take further action. He's peeing okay though...except for dripping on the floor every now and then.

Poor guy. Is he mostly sleeping all day?

I have an uniformed opinion I can't resist voicing.
Fixed. --------------- Glad to hear he's not hurting. Keep us updated. What exactly is the diagnosis anyway?

That's all my dog ever does.

Mine too, but she's on psych meds.

Are you saying my dog is stealing somebody's psych meds?

JK, I did not voice the opinion. And it sounds like the dog IS hurting to me. But I am uninformed. Stoned on painkillers is not the same thing as being pain free.

I don't know. Do you feel abnormally angry or distressed?

                  The Thunder

I'm really saddened to hear about your dog. I can't imagine what I'd be doing if this was my dog.

Candice. I'm sorry you are dealing with this. Your love for that dog is amazing and inspiring. Please tell Ernie to HTFU and get better. Smile
Come across any cool medals lately?
No he's not sleeping all day. He's been laying around a lot, but I think because he's stoned. But he played frisbee earlier, and then proceeded to destroy the frisbee after catching it a few times so that's pretty normal behavior for him. I assume Trents opinion is putting him to sleep...but I can't do that when he's still mostly normal (i.e. catching and chasing after frisbees) and we don't really know what's wrong. What if it's something simple that we're missing? After living with a dalmatian for 3 years I kind of think they're like runners ...they ignore pain and push on because they're happier when they're active. Even when he's hurting and he's lethargic...I take him to the vet and he perks up and gets hyper because of all the new people he gets to be around. But it's obvious something is wrong when blood and urine is dripping out of his penis. He's been able to pee normally otherwise (today)...but it's kind of like he's got a leak. I'm thinking if he wasn't on pain killers he might hold his pee in. I have a theory that he's not actually getting blocked, that he's just holding himself because it hurts too bad to let it come out....but I don't really know. I called a vet in Cookeville that I used to work for and he gave me a couple of places to call to see what they think.

                        Oh Mighty Wing

Candice - you could be right i guess about holding it as long as possible especially if it feels like knives coming out of his penis... But blood and urine normally isn't a good sign... I hope it clears up and i hope you can figure out what's wrong with him.
Well I don't think it's going to clear up, since this is the 4th time it's happened. The first time was right before my marathon in St. Louis...so this has been going on a while, even though it goes away and comes back, but obviously getting worse. He's thrown up twice since I last replied. The puking thing is a new symptom. Hopefully it was just something random that made him sick to his stomach...

maybe some of the frisbee isn't agreeing with him?? and they don't know what's causing it?
